James Hyde (ex-Sam, PASSIONS) was supposed to play Hank Bennett on PASSIONS but was cast as Sam at the eleventh hour.

Ben Masters (ex-Julian, PASSIONS) was considered for Sam Bennett before being cast as Julian Crane.

Dennis Parlato (ex-Clay, LOVING) was rumored to be considered for Alistair and Julian.

In addition to Parlato, allegedly, David Hedison (ex-Spencer, AW), Donald May (ex-Adam, The Edge of NIght), Quinn Redeker (ex-Alex, DAYS), Roy Thinnes (ex-Sloan, OLTL), John Forsythe (ex-Blake, DYNASTY), John Reilly (ex-Sean, GH), Charles Keating (ex-Carl, AW), and Nicolas Coster (ex-Eduardo, ATWT) were among the many actors considered for Alistair before the late David Bailey took on the role.

LIza Huber read for Sheridan, and MacKenzie Westmore read for Gwen.

Philip Brown (ex-Buck, LOVING) was rumored to be considered for both Sam Bennett and Martin Fitzgerald.

Eric Martsolf (Brady, DAYS) originally auditioned for Ethan when PASSIONS first went on the air.

Katherine Helmond was rumored to be considered for Rachel Barrett.

That's the second or third time I've read Katherine Helmond's name linked to a soap role (another being Helena Cassadine). Was she really serious about taking on a daytime gig or was her name just sort of tossed about?

When PASSIONS first premiered in 1999, Ben Masters had dark brown hair and went gray over time. I could see why people finding Masters being considered for other characters strange.

Even though James Hyde made Sam Bennett his own, he was too young IMHO, in hindsight.

James Hyde was playing a character who was supposed to be at least a decade older. His younger brother, Hank, was supposed to be young enough to be his son.

With Hyde playing Sam, Sam, Hank, and Ethan looked like they were closer in age.

Honestly, could you buy him being a father (Ethan, Noah, Kay, Jessica, and Jack) and grandfather (Little Ethan, Jane, Jonathan, Maria, and Little Spike) with him looking like he's in his late twenties/early thirties.

I also wish Oppenheimer had stayed on as Alistair, although hearing that about Katherine Helmond makes me wonder if they considered Robert Mandan.

Didn't somebody say Robin Mattson was up for Grace and Faith? Either way, anybody would have done much better than Dana Sparks.

i cant remember who it was maybe Finola Huges or Fiona Hutchison. It was one of them. Anyway one of them said that Passions met with a lot of vets when they began casting and the fact that Passions was demanding 5 year contracts turned many vets off.

I remember reading Finola Hughes was offered or considered for the original cast of Passions, can't recall which role though. I'm sure it's been mentioned before that James Reilly wrote Sheridan Crane with Melissa Reeves in mind for the role.

    • I do not think I have ever agreed with Vee. Normally I do not read him, Ignore ya know. For some unknown reason I clicked to read. And I agree 1000%. Now, this is so odd that I need to go away for a bit.
    • Justine had a lot of hooey in it, but she was an actual woman, not a guy in drag. She was a doppelganger of Rachel, French, having had a past history with Carl, etc. Two of the more outrageous parts-Justine bricking alive Vicky into a wall & Justine grinding the gears driving a big rig.
    • Hehe, twi/x actually x, formerly Twitter. Typically I find 2 sources for "crazy fan rumors" - the wrong parts of FB and x. Oy.
    • Not to hijack the thread, but was that character Justine? I just found this interview online with Logan and see what you're talking about - wow!   http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/chat85.html

    • Where do you discover this crazy rumor??
    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.
