Look in the Potpourri thread, Mark has a video with Moonves, he talks at the end of it about ATWT. Basically: we're done with it!

However, I don't think that there is anything that any soap can do to stop the erosion of its audience in the long run.

Audience erosion is a given.

The speed at which it happens is the problem.

Let's not sugarcoat it. Y&R is going down fast and hard. Its descent in quality has been sudden and shocking and I do not believe those writers will be replaced. This is it, this is the team, they're making a Frons/Goutman-style soap and Sony likes it. I thought it would be last soap standing; now I honestly don't know. It's like the production staff wants it to plummet.

Goutman is a bitter burnout case. He did good work at AW in a horrible situation and he made ATWT stellar for a good stretch. But when Sheffer left, he seemed to turn dictatorial, nasty and bitter, and it's come out in casting, production and story, on every level, from all the recasts to the dogged obsession with certain couples to the blink-and-you-miss-it storytelling. This is a man who just wants it over, [!@#$%^&*] the fans, and according to Daytime Confidential that's how he felt about ATWT. He was marking time, waiting to close it out.

I will concede that the soaps have done its part to turn off the viewers that they do have with poor storytelling and overall crappiness. However, I don't think that there is anything that any soap can do to stop the erosion of its audience in the long run. Even Days is eventually going to lose its audience gains.

The thing is... the viewers that are left are still being ignored, made to feel they don't matter. Look at almost EVERY CBS primetime show getting heavy promotion during the soaps... but does the reverse happen? HELL NO. Just TODAY..... at 12:20 Central time on CBS, they show a preview for NCIS, and have a lovely graphic shot of a partially decomposed CORPSE big as day, right on the screen. God forbid the housewives that ARE still at home would try to eat their lunch and watch their soaps at the same time, and see the like of that. What the FUC!! are these network people thinking?

I'm calling it now. Goutman will go to Y&R as the new EP in late 2010 or early 2011.

Is it just me or was he hesitant to speak about ATWT? How long before he follows in the footsteps of a Mr. Jeff Zucker?
