Guiding Light Discussion Thread

All the writers in this interview revealed and/or implied that the more outlandish plot points and controversial story decisions were mandates from network execs and producers.

Jim Brown revealed what's already known that he was told to tell the clone story (Wendy Fischman concocted it). He was told to bring Jesse back from the dead on AMC.

Millee said she never resurrected a dead character. I remember her second short GL stint. The show was getting good but Rauch left and Conboy fired her for Weston. I loved her stories about bringing Ed back. She tried.  Network and P&G and EP interference killed the show.

Dave was too young and inexperienced to head write a troubled show. Dave seemed to value and appreciate the history of the show but he took over after Weston, Labine, McTavish.  The three worst periods for the show. He was also forced to work with Swajeski who had petered out after four years on AW and again was not a writer; she had been a network hack.  But P&G was hiring to pay minimum salaries for those positions. Why do you think they replaced expensive Conboy with actress Wheeler. Do you think she was earning his salary? Nope.

What was clear from comments: Paul Rauch was a hot mess with a lot of power.

In all that I have ever read about GL, then and now, I have never heard of anything but respect and affection between JFP and Mark Derwin. If the alleged trouble between them was "heavily reported," you'd think there would a mention of it elsewhere on the Internet.

I was kind of perplexed when Taggert said that about the Bauers. If she felt that way why didn't she at least bring back Mike and Hope? Maybe she tried. I wonder how many head writers get the blame for things that were producers' decision like the clone story. Maybe it was the producers who wanted to downplay the Bauers. We'll probably never know. It sounds like being the head writer of a soap can be a very frustrating job.

Definitely an odd Alex recast but she does feel regal here. I was trying to find that old temp recast thread to no avail(must be dropped off to archived parts of SON somewhere). Interesting to see for sure.

That kid, that is Johnathan Brooks? Never seen him before but recognized the name from the closing credits. I remember back in the WOST days someone called it Quint & Nola's "Cousin Oliver/Billy Napoli" moment. How the heck did Quint & Nola end up with him? Did he live with them until their exit?

Would have to agree. Kreizman had some decent ideas. It's just a shame his writing had about as much emotional depth as a frat house. Not to mention Wheeler blowing through so much story with her special Wednesday episodes.

I think in time Taggart would’ve brought more Bauer’s back. Didn’t she and Lloyd Gold bring back Ed Bauer? It’s no secret that Alan Michael was supposed to come back for the war over Spaulding, and who knows with his return maybe that would’ve opened the door for Hope. I’m just speculating but Taggart in my opinion seemed to get the ball rolling.

I was over at one of the game show forums reading a thread about tape wiping and shows thought to be lost. Someone mentioned that the daytime version of To Tell The Truth has turned up along with a couple of other daytime shows. Another person replied that Guiding Light episodes thought to be lost may exist as well. Wouldn't that be incredible ?

    • yes I thought of the Renee party... But this is different because I'm talking specifically about the revealer convincing someone else to throw the party.  And the someone else complies, having no idea what the revealer plans. I'm wondering if Michele Val Jean did a first with BTG in 2025. But the BTG thread is already so busy -- that I thought it important to *NOT* clog it up with discussing this, so I brought the question here instead. That way, if other reveals come up in conversation, it's not a problem on this "general retro soap" thread.
    • Well, good that they showed Vanessa though I wish she was there.   Lol. And here comes Naomi. AND an explanation from Jacob.

She is diabolical! Remember in this scene she offered Martin a brownie which seemed so random? In this episode its revealed that when he was a kid, Ted used to bring him to a restaurant where the waitress would give him brownies....that waitress was Leslie. She was playing games and trying to jog his childhood memory
    • Yay!!!!!! And made it ON TIME, TOO!!!   And this is giving DAYS reveals circa late 90s already.
    • Bish what? I was not expecting that, I was for sure expecting him to go after Nicole (He still can). Looks like Leslie put her out! I love these new developments, Eva Dorian Lording her way into Fairmont Crest. My good sis better trap that doctor.
    • It should be in its synopsis on the DVR description of the show.
    • Well, in a way DAYS "Renee Dumonde DiMera Threw a Party & Invited Everyone & Then Told the Whole Town Off" if you see what I mean. She definitely pretended that she was throwing this shindig for a pleasant reason while she KNEW her real intent wasn't pleasant AT ALL. And, everyone in Salem was targeted by her in this way.  I mean it was supposedly a celebration of her engagement. But, that is not what happened! I think it checks off all your boxes. And, before today I would definitely have called it "singular". There was nothing like it. Now, there's something not only similar but possibly .... more far-reaching? I was just struck by a thought. When MVJ was tasked to write a catfight, she wrote the best catfight that has ever existed. I'm not sure but what if she's done it again?!!
    • What's with this show constantly encouraging women to take back men who aren't worth a damn, then end up doing it lol. This was realistically a 4-episode week considering all the flashbacks to the showstopper can collectively form a 19-minute episode on its own.
    • Another episode uploaded. Love Chandler introduction.

    • Naomi was in Monday's episode, though the client wasn't. Naomi and Jacob were at Uptown with Chelsea, Allison, Derek, and Ashley. And what an amazing episode that was today. Tricia Mann-Grant was absolute perfection as was Ambyr Michelle. I cannot wait to see Dana mix it up with the Duprees, especially Anita.
