I agree, but I don't think katie meant he was the new Roger. Just the closest. The character actually did reach some levels of complexity at times, like during his relationship with Cassie. His feelings for Richard were also complex. Even with much better writing he wouldn't have been what Roger was, but he could have been a rich character if the show had tried.

Doug Marland kept the Bauers going during his stint and introduced the Reardons as the newer core family to provide a counter balance and fresh story possibilities for the 80s.

Once he left both families were lost in the shuffle.By 85 Tony,Nola,Jim etc had already gone and Im sure Chelsea was not a Marland creation in his original family outline.

Pam Longs initial revamp brought ratings and interest but the problem was there was little story to sustain the characters long term.Things like Susan Piper and Dreaming Death could have happened to any characters on the canvas.

There was a soap article with Marland during this stint on "The Doctors" where he was less than gracious about Elizabeth Hubbard (who constantly changed the dialogue and the other writers had written) and Julia Duffy (who quit the show when he had major plans for her character). He came across a bit whiny during that interview.

Bert's death and funeral were the perfect time to turn the ship around and reintroduce some Bauers. I would have recast both Mike and Hope (sorry, ER never did it for me..) especially with Alan headed back to town. Mike could have gotten with Alex and Hope with Ross..both enough to bug Alan. I would also have brought back Meta, and all this could have been handled as they came back for the funeral and decided to stay (I would have had Bert leave Hope her house in her will, a house which Hope always thought of us "home" and Mike would decide to represent Ed and Mo in the custody of Michelle.) Meta would have taken over the Boarding House so she could dispense advice to all the newbies who would invariably live there.

I am one of the few that like the Nursery Stalker Story Line..sure it was a stretch but I liked it and Holly didn't do anything unredeemable...( I think Days got the Salem Stalker idea from this.) But it just ended...(with her brother no less wandering around the woods never to be heard from again.) and we were thrust into San Crud. Some people wanted Ed to be the one who talked Holly off the cliff, er bridge, but I thought that it made sense for once for Reva to be the hero..she was there before, she knew what it was like.

People keep forgetting, Bill Bauer had an boy with Simone..so a new side of the family would have made sense that way...( I think a hot guy, maybe a cop, could have been involved with Reva at the time she was involved with that goofy doctor/spy guy.)

I was just a kid when that was happening as well, so I was wondering if I might not have remembered the storyline correctly and Bill fathered both of the kids.

Great ideas, especially Bert leaving her house to Hope. Just curious - who would you have wanted to play Mike and Hope?

Thanks! Good question. I see Hope as a more conflicted woman then the Hope we saw...not bad...more sophisticated and not so sugary sweet. A woman who wants to live up to her grandmother's legacy but can't seem to do so and is frustrated by that.  She would be an overachiever...(having a dad like Mike would make you that way and could explain the alcholic thing..) and I would have her created a successful design company in NY, and she returns home to follow a romantic notion of recapturing her youth as the Bauer Princess, and to raise her son as she was raised in a small town surrounded by family and friends, and with Alan "Dead" or missing, she feels safe coming home.   But then life...and Alan gets in the way, and Alex uses her in her ongoing struggle with Alan, with Mike getting involved....Again, thinking she was going to become the heart of the family and community but pulled into a different direction because that is just not who she is. Ironically, I think Rick, when played and written well, was really the one who could become like his grandmother, he was always a big mensch!

For Mike, I don't know. I do know that I would have screen tested and gotten the approval of Bev as I would make him the real love of her life eventually, they just can't seem to agree on anything.  I actually think Raines would have made a better Mike but I don't know if he would have had chemistry with Bev.. Maybe Jed Allen???

According to the GL anniversary book, Paul was the son of Bill and Simone, though the information in the book may have been wrong.

I saw the interview on one of The Doctors message boards sometime in the past year. It was very insightful because it showed Marland was clueless about The Doctors. He said that soaps are about families and that he was restructuring the show around the Powers, Aldrich, and Dancy families. Having watched the reruns on Retro, it's clear families were secondary to the staff of Hope Memorial Hospital. I'll see if I can find that article. It was quite interesting.

As far as I know, Falken Smith did not comment publicly about her dismissal from TGL; she had been a lot more vocal about getting fired from DAYS and GH! I wonder if TPTB just thought she was not going to be a good fit. She was writing the show as it should have been written, but considering the sweeping and crippling changes soon to come, perhaps the higher-ups wanted to bring in less stong-willed writers, who would not balk at dismantling the show. PFS knew what worked and what did not work on daytime TV; I doubt she would have willingly gone the dumbed-down sci-fi route. She railed against the stupid writing on GH (i.e. the Ice Princess garbage).

Pamela Long did have a lot of heart, but she needed a strong story editor to keep her dumber material in check, and a producer to reign her in. The Four Musketeers proved popular, but I will never believe that nonsense like Jonathan Brooks and his talking computer, the ghost in the attic, the Dreaming Death, etc., were what ardent fans of this particular show wanted to see. Years later, Long admitted that fantasy was not the best way to go, that if in doubt, on the soaps it was better to get real.

I never cared for Beth Raines in the first place, but once she went to San Cristobel and inexplicably turned into an intolerable shrew, without any motivation, I wanted them to kill of the character. I knew she would never be redeemable.

The ONLY possible justification for bringing back that icky Bradley Cole would be...to kill him off a second time, LOL.

As for DAM's ass...I had not noticed, but I will take your word for it.

My memory is hazy now. I don't remember for sure if they said or implied on-screen that Paul Kinkaid was Bill's biological son. Did you read that he was a Bauer in Christopher Schemering's book? That one struck me as quite accurate. Some of the other soap-related books made a lot of boo-boos.

Technically, soaps may indeed be about families, but on THE DOCTORS, the family was the staff at Hope Memorial. Marland did not seem to have trouble understanding the importance of the hospital staff as a family unit when he wrote for GH, at least.

    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
    • I know we have discussed the fact that Another World seemed to be planning a location shoot in Finland that got cancelled. I came across this item from the syndicated Soapbox column published June 14, 1982. "Soap operas have been experimenting extensively with on-location shooting in recent years to enhance storylines and increase their viewing audience. A major drawback is the added production costs involved. Another World, for example, cancelled a special trip for Victoria Wyndham (Rachel Cory on the show), who was scheduled to shoot scenes in Finland. The producers felt that the high price tag, along with resentment of the cast members who also wanted to travel but were to be left behind. was enough to scrap the whole project."
    • A few more thoughts about these last two episodes. I thought it was interesting how much disdain both Dani/Anita have for Eva. I thought it was amusing how Dani was calling her lying/conniving and how Anita pointed as if to say, "that part". They definitely are not here for her, and I could see them having harsh confrontations with her in addition to Leslie. I'm curious to see Kat's interaction with Eva on Monday's episode. I think it might be interesting if Kat (along with possibly Naomi/Chelsea) come around to Eva before Dani/Anita do. Of course, Kat will be understandably angry at her. But maybe a tiny part of her might feel sorry for her if she really does believe that she's Ted's daughter as well and that Leslie lied to her. I could see Kat confronting Eva again and warning her not to harm her family anymore. But I could also possibly see Kat admitting that what Ted/Leslie did regarding her was messed up as well. And maybe that will pave the way down the line for them to get along better. I also agree with the comments/speculation made in the threat that Nicole will eventually accept/probably love her someday as well. I still wouldn't mind if somehow Nicole ended up being her biological mother. They have both been acting like they care for each other in this storyline. Nicole somehow ending up being her mother would be soapy and provide some more interesting layers in this story. And regarding Andre/Dani's romance it seems like they are genuinely developing feelings for each other. I have missed episodes, so maybe more of this has been elaborated on. But it seemed like there was genuine affection between both of them when they snuck a kiss publicly in the hotel. And also, them both talking about going publicly with their relationship. I wonder what everyone's reactions will be should they be caught by someone together. Of if they flat out tell everyone about their relationship.
