Y&R: Week of May 18, 2009

Cashton, I like your theory but I guess my problem is that Y&R seems to be heading into "ABC" direction. Too violent, too dark, etc. If Victor did indeed kill Walter Palin, that should be a huge beat. Sonny Corinthos has killed more folks than we can count but he's an ABC cartoon. If Victor is a murderer, that needs to mean something on Y&R.

If that spoiler about Victor is true, then it is Sheffer at work. Sheffer has never known where to draw the line. He did it with Marshall Travers and then Craig on ATWT. Y&R is turning into every other soap which is not good.

I get what you're saying. but i'm a Buffy fan - and in that universe, if you kill someone it changes you forever. If Victor did kill Walter, he's not becoming dark, he is dark.

The reprecussions for Victor will be harsh and severe, too. But Jack really got Victor good and i guess I just see the dots lining up for Victor to just want to END this once and for all.

Also, the character of Victor has always been so invincible. The writers always have such a hard time creating realisitc struggles for him cause of his extreme power. hence he gets arrested every year and gets mugged or shot. This gives him a fight with the only person capable of truly destroying him - himself.

But guess we'll have to tune in - Cara Mia! BTW - you are definitely my fav new poster!

No matter what happens, Victor always wins. If he loses a woman, he replaces her and we are sure to see the woman he lost is still in love with him (if she isn't dead). When someone does get the best of Victor, they pay the price in the end.

They never stray from Victor being all-powerful, because even when he's at a low point, they let us know the people who are scheming against him are not going to win (like the silly story with Jack, Adam, and the forged diaries).

I don't know if they will ever be able to change the formula. In previous years this didn't matter as much because the characters around him were strong and complicated in their own right, but now most of them have no true identity outside of Victor, and they have no backbone.

That's deep! And very Shakesperean. Whenever Eric Braeden decides to leave Y&R for good, I think Victor should go out in some grand tragic fashion that he brings upon himself. Maybe even something out of Lear, where he does something that kills Abby or Victoria and his own death follows soon after.

I can believe that Victor would go there. Not only because of everything Jack has done to him over the years, but because of Jack pulling Adam into his latest attempt to bring Victor down. Jack was going to send Victor to prison for life! No way Victor would take that lying down.

. This also gives me hope for Adam.

That was the entire Shick marriage, which many now seem to look fondly upon as having a steady foundation worth returning to and repeating again.

Good for Phyllis to at least

As for Sharon, I hate the character, and have no problems with the actress, unless the rumours are true that she doesn't want to french kiss on screen. She is certainly no Hunter Tylo who has made demands for the Taylor character's writing based on her idea of what the character be. SC seems to be able to separate herself from the character she plays which has allowed Sharonit to really come alive onscreen. I hope the writers continue to explore this character and why she behaves the way she does, not just sweep her problems under the rug and return to her and Nick, happily cheating ever-after.

I haven't minded CE's Adam but am disappointed in his unprofessionalism. Did he see himself as the future of the Y&R? From the moment his character appeared on screen, he was pursuing his brothers wife and backstabbing everyone, how moral is that? Part of the casting process should be evaluating whether a person will play the role no matter what is being called upon for them to do, barring the risk of physical injury.

I'm surprised Sharon wasn't at the Lame wedding. It would have been nice to see at least one white face in the Bride's section at the wedding. But one of my major problems with the writing is that all their characters are segregated into their own storyline grouping. We don't need to see Lily and Sharon constantly interacting but it would be nice if they wrote that they know each other and share Dru's loss.

AF sucked on B&B. Keep her on Y&R where she is written as an aspiring somebody rather than a baby obsessed nobody like she was on B&B. At least now when the character indicates she'd like to be a mother, she's in the right age group for that biological clock to be going into high gear.

While overall, I'm enjoying the Y&R, there is definitely much room for improvement.

Having Victor turns into a

will simply destroy the character. As despicable as he is, he has never been and never will be that. Damn, he used to be a complicated character, now he's just a full-on comical relief villain. :(

And then people are still claiming this show is good.:lol:

    • I think Cheryl was essentially replaced by Josie, and it seems likely that Lemay wanted to bring the Frames back into the picture and for a variety of reasons that it would be McKinnons who would make way for them. Cheryl didn't really get many layers -- she was pretty and kind and sweet and faded into the background so that Scott could participate in the AIDS storyline with Dawn. Looking at the AWHP, other than (not very) shockingly being in love with her mother's adopted son Scott, Cheryl apparently went out with Sam and flirted with much-too-old-for-her John Hudson and MJ's ex-boyfriend/pimp Chad. I know MJ told Mary that she had been a prostitute, but did she tell Cheryl and did she tell anyone about Chad's pimping?
    • I feel the same way about Melissa Reeves' Jennifer. She just makes the show feel like home by her presence alone. I am perfectly okay with them coming in every once and awhile, which probably fits Reeves' schedule better anyway. They're connections to Salem are still there: JJ, the grandkids, Jack still owning half of The Spectator ... they're perfect recurring characters.
    • Hahaha. Jean Hackney, Angelica Nero, and the Falcon Crest henchwomen were all straight out of a James Bond movie.
    • My hunch is what you've described. JFP is likely back working on transitioning the show to a new studio and embracing new technology for its production model.
    • The woman who was the co-chair of Latinas for Trump is now complaining about his targeting immigrants that she thought were "safe." I also read a puff piece from yet another "insider" journalist who lives to normalize fascists - this one with a tech bro who was venting off the record because he thought voting for Trump was cool and would show up the Democrats and maybe we'd get Greenland, but now he's getting upset.  These people still support Trump, and Republicans, they just want to make sure they get credit for being respectable. And they will get it.
    • I really do wish someone could. Just a few characters in very simple backdrops, with very real problems that are just a little larger than life, like the '50s and '60s. All the characters having a level of dignity or respect. And their inner lives are what dominate the story, even if there are outside forces at play.
    • It's a lesson to never be loyal because once your use is up, you're shown the door. MSW was the only bright spot for CBS for awhile, and once they were back on top... they promptly sabotaged the show as a repayment for all that the show had done for the network.
    • The show made a mistake in not bringing in more McKinnon kids, specifically bringing back Ben. Kathleen was leaving, and while I like you am very fond of Sally Spencer as MJ, that didn't seem to be a common view. They also decimated the character in a truly sick storyline. So that just left Cheryl.
    • Between Gwen and Cat, the show often seems to side with those who cause lots of cruelty to Jack and Jennifer. I am half-surprised that the show hasn't brought Peter Blake back for more of the same.  I don't really know if there is a purpose for them in Salem now, but I do feel a sense of stability and rightness when Melissa Reeves is back in the role of Jennifer and back in the Horton house, in spite of...well, a lot of offcamera stuff we all know perfectly well.
    • I like to call her an FC-reject character
