Not to bring anyone down, but the news articles also highlighting how Democratic registrations are dropping as Gen Z is gravitating to the GOP also doesn't give me much hope for the future.

So, frankly, I just try to live in the moment. People - for all the bad polling - STILL seem to fall for GOP propaganda, so what can one do if folks CHOOSE to be deceived/ignorant, you know?

Yeah, this is why I've decided to largely stay away from politics and not discuss it with anybody, not even my own family and friends. Because what's the point? They're just going to believe whatever they believe no matter what. And I also decided that I'm going to try to enjoy life as much as I possibly can until I can't anymore, (either my family becomes completely bankrupt as a result of the Big Beautiful Bill and we lose everything and have to live out in the streets, or the government comes barging through my home and drags me away into a black van and whisks me somewhere where no one will ever see or hear from me ever again).

Yes, political violence has no place in our country, but it is in our country. Mass shootings or school shootings have no place in our country, but they are in our country. We can talk about what should be in our country and be prudent and tasteful and wishcast, or we can address a situation based on the phenomena ruining our country which has been for a long time, and who has exploited it, capitalized on it or incited it. My response to today is not the same as my response might be a year ago, because institutionalized extremism has fundamentally altered our world. This is simply what people like this have reaped, sown and brought home.

I can spare thoughts for Kirk's family, who didn't ask for this. Unfortunately Kirk never spared a thought for me or mine. These people want many of us dead or caged. I didn't wish Charlie Kirk dead, and I think more death escalates an already very bad moment in America. Innocent people will pay the price for his death. I think that when you build a life and career around hate and normalizing political violence, and reduce those you can't identify with to NPCs or acceptable casualties, you run the risk of becoming simply another footnote in what are now unquestionably our years of steel.

I hope someday we we learn from some of this horror and some of these deaths, the way Kirk never learned from anything. It's not meant to be a Field of Dreams quote, but when you build it, it will come.

You profit off of hate speech and gun violence, and state empathy is made up and dangerous, I don’t give a flying f.uck what happens to you.

I'm calling it now: this is going to serve as a major turning point that is going to get us one step closer to an eventual full on civil war between the right and the left. There is no way that the Republicans aren't going to be out for blood and want some kind of revenge for what happened to Charlie Kirk. I definitely see a lot more similar incidents like this happening a lot more often in the near future, regardless of whether or not they prove fatal.

All I can say is that while I was minding my business and scrolling on tiktok I suddenly saw the video of it...  Without consenting to watch something like this. I am just giving heads up for people to be careful while you browse on TikTok or social media right now. I think it will take them time to remove these videos. The AI that should be detecting how inappropriate this is to be on the platform is clearly not doing its job. So disturbing. What kind of world do we live in where I would see this kind of thing while I am scrolling through cats and dogs and Mariah Carey clips. I think I've had enough of the internet for today.

Ezra Klein is trying in this column to argue that Kirk was doing politics correctly if you just ignore the content of what he was advocating. That he was contributing to American democracy by arguing civilly for the subjugation of women, gay people, trans people. It simply doesn’t work.

It doesn’t work for a lot of reasons, but the simplest reason is that a big part of Kirk’s politics was active support for the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election result on Jan 6 and entrench Trump in power notwithstanding American democracy.

i do not think ezra klein genuinely grieves for charlie kirk. i think ezra klein thinks it’s professionally advantageous to perform grief.

well, it sure is showing people in new lights...some of which is purely performative while the rest is eye opening. And I don't like that the people who don't care or are indifferent to it for logical reasons are being attacked for it.
