What Rauch liked to elevate more than anything was his reputation. Lemay seemed to be the one who was interested in trying to bring elements of a play into daytime, even if Rauch was clearly very involved. The show became increasingly melodramatic in Lemay's last few years, and those theatrical elements faded after he left. If there is anything of a play in what survives of Lemay's 79-82 work, it was a play that closed quickly.
