Does anyone recall the timing of shifts in writers and producers in relation to the clips posted above?

I don't note many tonal shifts but the stories ramp up and then fade out.  Julie comes back, with a new-faced husband, Zed Diamond with his art deco set collection and, an evil twin  but they can't get more than a year of story out of all of those characters?  I feel like Jenny and Zed were never fully realized as characters.  Jenny went from an object that Zed desired to a crazy person with very little nuance.  As a result, when there is too much exposition, I start looking for the plotholes: for example, Jenny grew up near Julie but nobody ever commented on their similarities (given that both were in the papers), they looked alike but they weren't twins so how did the cops confuse their fingerprints during Mark's shooting?, was Jenny marred by trauma or was she always crazy? why did they treat her as if she was developmentally delayed at first? why didn't Zed's hair ever move?....

Matt McCandless and DJ Phillips (Grant Alexander's character) were also given a lot of press build up for a very short story.  So, I wonder if new writers or producers got rid of some these characters?

Grant Aleksander had only recently left his more popular role on GL to go west to get in primetime and the movies. I think he only signed a 13-week contract, probably to pay the rent in L.A. while he was waiting for primetime opportunities to open up. He was written as such a sleaze bag from the start I doubt he was ever meant to be long-term. As we know Aleksander didn't make it in primetime or the movies and went back to New York where he rejoined GL (causing his replacement John Bolger to be unceremoniously dropped from the role of Phillip Spaulding).

One thing we're seeing in the May 1986 episodes is the transition from Henry Slesar to James Lipton as headwriter. After Baxter and Clarissa remarry, it is all Lipton's material until the end (March 1987). Lipton wrote out Tyler and abruptly killed off Jenny, in order to facilitate a Julie-Zed relationship which I think was a mistake.

Lipton also took Sloane entirely out of Trey's orbit by hooking her up with Prince Ali. And he decided Trey didn't belong with Kelly either, so Kelly ends up falling more in love with Thomas...and Trey gets a new wife in the form of Teri Hatcher. Some of Lipton's stuff was quite good...but the transition from Slesar's material to his was a bit jarring and not as smooth as it could have been.

I believe it was around May 1986. Slesar was there for just a year, having started in the summer of 1985. Lipton wrote the show until it went off the air in late March 1987.

I notice in the section for Episode Writers and Directors (in the Resource Archive) there's no thread for Capitol:

I wonder who we could in fact contact about getting Capitol released somewhere. Someone on YT is offering the complete series but I'd need to learn Italian first.

    • I've never found him as bad as some. I think he's always shined in scenes with Vernon, who should be his father. I also think he has great chemistry with Kat and Dani which I hope they tap into more over time. Dani/Martin feel like such a fun and believable Auntie/Nephew relationship.
    • I'm fighting for my life on another board for my husband Brandon and I'll do it here too lmao
    • I don't expect Lois to be the same person she was 25 years ago, but she's definitely lost a lot of what made Lois unique.  It's clear the show doesn't know how to write for her, and the sole purpose of Lois is to hide this Gio secret.  It's a shame she doesn't interact with more of the canvas.  It's a waste of Rena's talents. I like Brook Kerr most of the time.  She can be hit or miss.  I totally get what you are saying about her line readings too.  I honestly think the character really suffers being stuck in the Curtis pairing.  She's much better than Tanisha Harper's Jordan lol.
    • Friday and yesterday's episode is what daytime television should be. The other shows airing could take a page from yesterday's show.  I loved the rage, hurt and anger Nicole unleashed on Ted.  Daphnee should be up for an Emmy nom for these scenes.  It broke my heart to see how Dana had locked Eva out.  I do feel sorry for Eva.    I am still bumfuzzled as to why Leslie/Dana went to the DuPree's and asked them to accept Kat UNLESS Eva is really Kat's twin (and really Nicole and Ted's daughter that maybe they though they lost or an embryo Dana/Leslie stole??) I loved how Anita and Vernon both shot her down.    Ohhh and let me just say Friday and yesterday was the MOST fire I have seen Martin have since the show started.  Maybe Brandon Clayborn is coming into his own with the role finally.
    • You've been seeing him all along. You just didn't know it was him, I guess.

    • Where to for Dana? She's pissed off the Duprees (most of the cast), alienated her daughter and will she be welcomed by the Have Nots at the diner? Maybe she can befriend Ashley and Derek and liven up their story.
    • Melissa Ordway announced she was moved to recurring back in November but is still credited with the contract cast members.
    • I think of Evan as a smarmy bast*rd. Maybe you'll like that description. You certainly have him pegged correctly since he is just a soldier following "Admiral" Iris's marching orders.
    • So far the only interest I've seen from Evan to Amanda has been listening to Iris's orders to go and seduce her.  So far he hasn't been successful... but who knows. Amanda is unbearable at times. Entitled, spoiled... idiotic. Iris... so blatantly manipulating her and Amanda takes the bait. But I guess... when she gets in trouble... she'll have a chance to learn. That's what makes these shows so interesting.    Oh, no, don't worry. You haven't ruined a thing. Evan has not been on my radar that much... he was not one of the characters I was caring particularly... so nothing much has been changed for me. I don't think he has the stuff to ruin Rachel's life. He's just a pretty guy that can follow orders. Iris on the other hand... is dangerous.

P.S Maybe Evan will surprise me. Who knows.
