Members DRW50
I completely agree, I just don't think that it's why Knots was a success. I don't think of it as any type of social issues show. But then I disliked Karen's "Pollyana" speech, so I am probably just far off from where Michele Lee is.
Members alphanguy74
Oh, Carl... why did you dislike it? It's perfection!
Members DRW50
Forced, it was lines, a speech, not reality (to me), a caricature, OOC behavior by Gary to facilitate the conversation, and summed up how dumb Karen became over time. Karen never fought because she thought the world was an apple pie. She fought because she knew it was rotten to the core. She wanted to change that.
Members BKuzak
I think what Michelle said was right. Dallas and Dynasty were about "them" while Knots Landing was about "us." Knots Landing was about more regular people. Valene was a little crazy but Mac and Karen remind me a little of my neighbors. I think the reason it lasted so long was because while Dallas and Dynasty were getting all the applause, Knots Landing just kind of sailed through getting decent raitings. the only thing i had a problem with The Talk segment was the clothes segement. I'm willing to bet you that none of those clothes were seen on the show. I watched the fashion pretty carefully. It was i think what they wore to events at the time (there is a photo of Donna in that dress going somewhere) but not on the show.
Members alphanguy74
Oh, it was reality to me, very similar diatribes have come right out of my mother's mouth on dozens of occasions! And she loved that speech more than you can possibly imagine, and she didn't even watch the show, really... she just heard it while I was watching. Members Vee
I've always been curious about this show, and the PBS special and some other clips made me more curious. Is there anywhere to watch it online at all? Edited January 23, 2013 by Vee
Members Khan
Full episodes or just clips?
Members Vee
Preferably full episodes.
Members DRW50
I'm not saying it wasn't reality to the viewer - the viewer creates their own reality. I'm saying I didn't believe it was reality for Karen or the character she was supposed to be. I thought it was Michele Lee talking.
Members DRW50
I hope your neighbor didn't spend a year screaming DIRTY COP! at you... I'm pretty sure that Karen and Val wore those dresses on the show. I think this might be Karen's (if not she wore it at that restuaraunt Richard owned in season 4). This is probably my favorite soap cliffhanger. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRKz1WLMBlA
Members DRW50
They tend to take down episodes but the first two seasons are on DVD.
Members SFK
I was telling Carl, I met Michele at a Manhattan Theatre Club gala years ago, and she felt very passionately about that speech. She hugged and kissed me for even bringing it up. Vee, I think Knots is your kind of show.
Members Khan
They are plenty of good clips available, though. A good place to start is with "the10mann," who has posted many of the classic, most-talked-about stuff.
Members DRW50
It's a good thing she never met me, as I wasn't a fan of that Diana/Karen singalong either I wish I could meet Constance McCashin. Just to tell her I thought she was the heart of the show and firing her was the dumbest thing they ever did.
Members SFK
I have a couple of friends who knew CM from Brandeis. They didn't watch Knots so they never thought to ask her about the show, nor did she ever bring it up.
