That I am not surprised to hear at all. So sad. Ever since I was a little girl, I've had a fascination with the Presidents and First Ladies, which is another reason why I want to see these so much. The Jackson marriage, especially, was an incredible love story. Seeing paintings and such of the 7th President, it is no wonder Gerald Gordon was cast to play him. There's a definite resemblance.

I wonder if the FLD specials were released to schools and such for educational purposes. Of course, back then they probably were on film reels and shown on projectors...I wonder who would be the person/company to ask if they are still in existence.

Anyway, here is a review of the first of the three FLD specials - the one about the Jacksons that won Gerald Gordon an Emmy as the 7th President. TD is also represented by David O'Brien and Armand Assante. There's a photo of GG and Fran Brill in character:

The photo is a bit clearer here:

First Ladies Diaries was directed by Ira Cirker, who directed AW.The writer was Jerome Alden a playwright who wrote a couple of things about presidents past. I assume it was on videotape.I wonder if it was like a taped play with few sets etc and no location work?

Liz Hubbard was Edith Wilson in another of the series.

That's a great find!

I'm in early August now, and those weird huge disembodied heads they use for the Matt/Maggie angst scenes are so odd and came out of nowhere. I almost wonder if this was the Dark Shadows effect on other soaps (although Dark Shadows didn't use them all that much), or what.

It's really interesting to me to contrast Lydia Bruce and Bethel Leslie. There's a certain earthiness to Lydia that means she has scenes I can't really imagine with Bethel, like laying on the bed in a black slip (with white stockings and heels, no less - maybe a director had a fetish).

It's also interesting seeing just how much Liz changes with every man she's involved with. She tried to be mature with Nick. She was a kid with Steve. Now she's trying to be a quasi-hippie with Jody Lee, complete with a gradually changing "natural" hairstyle, and clothes that look like a Girl Scout troupe in San Francisco. It's too bad Pamela Toll left, as Liz is a really fascinating supporting character.

I also have to laugh at how often characters use Matt's office now. When I started watching I always assumed everyone stayed out of there out of respect, unless he called them, but ever since Steve started using it to horse around in, it's been some type of fair game. Seeing Jody Lee and Liz have an extended conversation in there and Jody not giving a care if he was caught by Matt sitting in the chair or looking around was odd.

That scene was so searing. It felt like it went on and on, but it reminded me of a play, almost - that was the way Lydia interpreted it. Like some drama of a woman's psyche. If this were most soaps, the onus would be on screwed-up Maggie needing to get over herself, and Matt would go sleep with someone and it would be her fault and blah blah blah, but here, they allowed us to understand her and to see that Matt's affections for Karen and Karen's callous behavior toward her for months had seriously undercut her self-respect and self-worth.

The other thing I meant to ask - the episode where Jody Lee and Liz sat for Greta, did anyone else get creeped out by that voice (the "Greta" voice) that came from upstairs and sounded like an evil Twilight Zone doll? When Jody went upstairs I expected to hear screams.

I know we'll be seeing more of Greta soon enough, but it kind of makes me laugh that the only time I've seen her from December 1967 to August 1968 (so far) was one episode when Kathleen Murray was temping as Maggie. It's like she hides from permanent recasts.

    • I remember this funny bit with Donna in 1989 or 1990 where Michael had asked Donna why she didn't have a female friend and/or really any friends.  I laughed when he mentioned how she was close to Iris, but backtracked by saying 'ok that was my fault' when she gave him the looks that could kill look. I remember there was a bit where Donna then tried to befriend Rachel and I believe Felicia in separate scenes with the two both looking at Donna in bewilderment.  It didn't seem to work. After Felicia and Lucas married, I do remember a few scenes between Felicia and Iris where they were being nice yet throwing subtle shade at one another.  Then Donna would come into the scene and then it seemed as though Iris and Felicia would both focus on their annoyance at Donna.  I do recall Felicia did get silo'd into her own orbit at times... and that Lorna and Jenna had more interactions with other characters outside that orbit.. moreso than Felicia. I think the isolation of  Donna/Rachel/Felicia became more pronounced/obvious once Iris was written off the show and JFP came into the EP position in 1995.   Even after JFP departed.. the isolation of characters into bubbles continued until the last few months of the show when Amanda started interacting with Cindy, Paulina resumed interacting with Rachel/Amanda, Vicky/Lila began sparring again after being in separate orbits for over a year, etc.
    • Only falling or tripping dreams for me...
    • I think with the Silk Press Sheila/Eva/Ted/Nicole situation fully out and in the open (for the most part)... I have some predictions for May/June: Kat/Eva/Tomas:  With the revelation that her father, who she held up as a hero, is not as perfect as he's presented himself to be.. I see Kat focusing her energy on supporting her mother and pushes Tomas away (she had mentioned to Vernon about how Tomas had asked her to step in and talk Naomi into dropping the lawsuit and how she didn't feel comfortable with that).   With Tomas pushed away from Kat.. he become the one individual that is nice to Eva and also feels a bit of guilt since his telling of what she confided in him to Kat ended up being the spark that made Kat resume investigating Eva.   Eva will also go to Tomas for comfort... and that will cause even more conflict/issues between herself and Kat. Nicole/Ted:  As we've seen for the last 2+ months... Nicole is not anything like Dani and her response to Silk Press' bombshells proves that.  Even if she opts not to file for divorce.. I predict a messy War of the Roses type of situation.   Although she kind of bought this on herself with the bottom bit of trust she had for Eva irregardless of the fact that she came recommended by Mona. Martin:  I have a feeling that his memories of the being Silk Press Sheila's little brownie friend will also revive the nightmares full stop.. and May will have this be the A story with Smitty and kids affected by this secret of his from the past.  If found out.. will Smitty leave him, or will Smitty continue his unhealthy devotion to Martin (and it is unhealthy).   And also, I hope we get some more focus/development on the Joey/Vanessa/Doug situation.. and also connect the threads of that threesomes to Jacob/Jacob's partner/Jacob's dad thread... and also get to see who else Joey starts to set his sights on (perhaps a Dupree.. since they're vulnerable right now). My wishlist for May/June for the B and C stories: Naomi/Jacob:  Cute couple.. but why are they together.  As the late Agnes Nixon would ask if she view them .. why are they together?  What is it about Naomi and Jacob's pasts pre marriage has led the two to find one another and get married?  Naomi seems a control freak... as a way to not be like her 'weak' mother Dani so she calls the shots?  What draws Jacob to Naomi?  Is it her sense of justice and passion?  Is it the Dupree last name?  Ashley/Derek:  The last time she was on, we finally got a bit of personality from her that isn't so perfect.  She's high strung/anal about her surroundings and her life.  Is she like this because she was a latchkey kid due to her single mother working all the time?  Is she only with Derek because he's 'simple' and 'uncomplicated'.. someone she thinks won't try to upset her routines?  As I say... I don't know if the writers/producers have the 'why' figured out for these two.. and if they can figure that out.. story can generate from that.
    • It's not the worst idea lol.  Emma deserves much better than Joss though.
    • Robert Newman gets the short end of the stick, as Josh is usually stuck being an [!@#$%^&*] until the chick he's with goes cray-cray and Reva becomes the better alternative.  Reva was also married to Josh's brother Billy. You said it better than I did.  While I didn't know Brandon had died on-screen previous to this, it was just odd that they'd made such a huge deal about him already being dead the summer before, yet now he's just hanging around in white linen in the islands, not giving a fig about his family and friends. To me, Brandon was always the spectre hanging over the family that explained their lack of conscience.  Long at times used history very well--or at least knew how to mine it for story effectively. The Fishing Trip and Dylan are probably the best examples of that. I don't think she came up with Dinah, but I could be wrong.

Marnie Schulenburg's widower. She was such a strong person. (I did not realize he played the Tucker Carlson knockoff on Succession)
    • She has the Bo Buchanan curse.  Agreed, Carly's reaction would be quite interesting.
    • I agree. Even the discussion about cuts at the end of scenes. I'm binging THE DEFENDERS right now, and it has those cuts. Is it odd? Oh God yes. Heck, I will say it's worse than what has been discussed here because it does not bother me here and this was back in 2017/2018.   That said...I am starting to look forward to BTG finding their proper rhythm.
    • Louise, what memories & Brooks with her! Other favorite domestics: Lucinda's butler Matthew, Ginger on GL, Vivian of course on AW. A notable butler & a notable cook at the Qs. DAYS Ivan taking care of Vivian Allamain all of those years. Oh, on AW Carl had a driver who sometimes had other duties: Ito? I recall him being Asian. I always felt sorry for Louise & Brooks when Mac & Rachel would fall out. How difficult it must have been for them with all that tension & heaven forbid they be in the room for one of their fights, which were violent & mean-spirited & loud!
