Emmerdale: Discussion Thread

I've always found the first episodes a little bit stiff, and the acting a bit wobbly in places. But despite that it's miles better than what we're getting nowadays.

I think Gail Harrison as Marian Wilks is the best thing about those early episodes. She has a bit more spirit and energy than the Sugden family members. I wonder how things would have progressed if she had remained on the show. She did visit on two occasions during the seventies and I think she fit right in both times. I wasn't impressed with the recast Marian in the late 80s though. Too bad that Gail either wasn't available or interested in reprising her role.

I haven't seen them until now and I was very impressed by the tightness of the scripts and fully realized characters. The first episode tells you all you need to know about this world, the relationships between the characters, and what's to come. Now if I could only find Episode #2...

So, it looks like the rumours about Charity having a secret son will turn out to be true....

I guess we are supposed to feel for Charity now, but all I feel is annoyance. Yet another Dingle-brat who will run around the village and take up screentime....

If the Dingles were just Charity, an evolved pansexual Debbie, a recast Noah when the time is right, and hopefully a good character in whoever this son is, I could get behind that. I share your hatred of the Dingle characters despite my affinity for some of the actors, but Charity is just too hard to let go of for me. And I find, she excels so much when she's away from the family because she's alsways been so much more than any of them.

I guess I must face the fact that the Dingles are popular. But when you hate a group of characters as much as I have come to hate them it makes it difficult to continue watching when the show just keeps on adding to  that group.

Furhermore, Charity already has three children. I realize it's not exactly the same since her child is going to be grown up, but why not give Victoria a child instead? You know, a member of the show's founding family, the daughter of Jack Sugden and the grand-daughter of Annie Sugden. The destruction the Sugden's have been subjected to makes it even more infuriating to think about the multiplying Dingles.

Peggy was killed off, just like her two children were. Honorary Sugden Matt lost two further children with Dolly. Jack's son Jackie was killed off, and Kathy lost his unborn child. Joe never even got to have biological children, and even his two step-children were killed off....

I think the only reason Andy and Robert were allowed to have children was because it involved Dingles. Andy had his children with Debbie and Robert is married to Aaron.

I have a feeling that her son is going to turn out to be the man who blackmailed/harassed Tracy, and the story will have her helping his daughter, a Liv knockoff. And it will upset Tracy, since everything has to be about her.

Victoria having a child would be nice, but the show does nothing with Robert having a child. They just don't care about the Sugdens. They really haven't for 20 years.

He doesn’t look a few years younger than Debbie, though, does he? At first I thought it could be Gerry but he’s definitely too young. This could be a real long shot but could it actually be...Joe? Has Emmerdale done a baby switch story yet? Joe does appear to be the right age to fit the storyline. But then again Joe and Debbie have had sex so...ewww. But...I don’t know...

Yes, they did a baby switch story with Ashley/Laurel and Greg and Melanie Doland in 2007-08.

And absolutely NO to Joe being Charity's son! That would be the last straw for me. But I don't think they would go there because as you said Joe and Debbie have had sex. Of course they would both be Dingles so...

Of course re Ashley/Laurel/Arthur. This wouldn’t quite be the same situation, though. I can see Chris Tate having bought a baby (he hadn’t even met Charity yet) after his and Rachel’s died. He passed him off as a Tate and never told anyone, especially Rachel.

As for Debbie and Joe having had sex, yeah, that would be a huge ewwww....but it wouldn’t be unprecedented. There were those two siblings on Brookside...

    • Jill Farren Phelps was always very skilled at saying what she meant onscreen in the bluntest way possible, like whenever she wanted fans to support one character vs. the other (hence Megan McTavish groaning about having to write Kale Browne's Sam Rappaport into three days a week at OLTL). Perhaps you should consider doing the same. Historically your intent is always far more obvious than your efforts at coy embroidery anyway. You believe people are dismissing Phelps' accomplishments, and suggest misogyny and fan blinders allow people to too easily pigeonhole and dismiss her skill set. I think we all understand her varied skill set. We're saying it's not enough to make up for her deficiencies as a storyteller and creative. JFP was undoubtedly a skilled technical producer. As a solo storyteller, and de facto HW, she was a repeat and predictable failure. She was not the first or last EP (male or female) to think she was a writer. If you want us to stop taking your behavior personally when you suggest misogyny is at play in board opinions of JFP, perhaps you should consider spending the next 10+ years here not acting like you're the only one who gets it.

Melissa was here today & we went to Michael's Crafts & Ofc Depot. In Michael's there were two beautiful LITTLE girls who kept staring at me, so I gave them a littel wave & very quietly said HI & then did back. I told Melissa they were staring at me. She smiled & said "Purple. A lot of little girls love purple & you forget but you have purple hair. Seeing you their whole imaginations are transformed! Thinking "That lady has purple hair. That means I can have purple hair! They had no clue before seeing you that it was possible." I just laughed & laughed.
    • This opening scene is hilarious...it's like someone wrote out the script for Philip with one hand. And Rick...sniffing a scarf over and over. And in their next scene they are still sniffing the [!@#$%^&*] scarf as the camera stays all over Philip's bare chest and armpits as he keeps working out. Insane stuff.

Bay City better be ready, because I'm back!   At Vicky's apartment she is once again drowning in doubts and jealousy. Deep down she realizes that her dream wedding will be a farce and nothing can change that. Bridget tries to calm her down, but the heroine is determined to suffer. She is not hearing any positive thoughts. She doesn't believe Jamie will marry her. At the Cory Publishing building another farce is in process. Iris, once again pretending to be the angel of love and sisterhood... is telling Mac and Rachel some wonderful news. When Iris has good news, you really need to look out for yourself. That's when things are bad. So what are the news? Miss Devil has put Amanda up for an award! Mac is smiling from ear to ear, and Rachel is suspicious. Maybe that's the effect Iris is looking for. To once again accent on the fact that Rachel doubts and criticizes her daughter. Iris will do anything to destabilize their relationship. She is like a cancer. Back to Vicky! Jamie is at the door. Looking like a sad puppy, he has come with a surprise. No, he is not gonna leave her and her unborn... Not yet. He has bought her earrings. Sad face. How nice. NOT. Victoria, of course... manages to break one of them the moment she touches it. Bad premonition maybe? She was back in hysterics. It's not easy to trap a man into marriage. Then you have to live with someone that didn't want you in the first place.  We were introduced to a new character (to me at least she is new) - Cass's sister - Stacey. She is giving me "hidden skeletons in the closet"-vibes. Love a girl like that. Stunning actress. I like her. The highlight of the episode was the strange and creepy reveal of Evan the escort... hugging someone named Janice's grave. I remember she had an issue with Rachel... and Rachel killed her in self defense I think... It was hinted in prior episodes, but I lack the context and story. I just know that everyone at the Frame house was mad that Rachel killed the bish. But I also got the impression that this Janice was sick in the head. So Evan is now talking to her grave and telling her he is going to ruin Rachel's life basically. Oh, Evan... I liked you better as a sexy gigolo.  Overall - 10/10 - how can I rate it lower when I haven't watched in months!!!

    • Once again, Marlena and Kayla were used very effectively and I couldn’t be happier.  Marlena counseling Johnny and then Chanel was the best part of today. They’re really delving into the human emotion of this storyline and I think that’s a good thing. It feels so much mature than it was before. EJ’s fear about what could happen to Johnny if he doesn’t let go of his anger could lead to some really good storylines in the future.  I also really appreciate the way that Paula/Jeanne are mixing it up and having different characters interact with each other. It was nice to see Shawn and Johnny remember that they’re cousins and share a scene together. I liked the parallel that was drawn between the two of them, and what’s going on with their fathers. I did have mixed feelings about everything with Cat though. I enjoyed Chanel warning her about EJ, mostly because it played into the way that she was written today. But I wasn’t the biggest fan of the Chad/EJ scenes. The two of them discussing Chad’s potential feelings for Cat didn’t really keep my interest.  But above all, I feel that everyone is being used more effectively and that we’re getting a better understanding of everyone as well. And that was exactly what Days needed.
    • It's a wild story for sure, especially the final conclusion (and fireworks offcamera, like Victoria Wyndham tearing into Michael Logan).

    • I did some research and the story wrapped up with Eric,a caretaker responsible for Georgina's death who then  tried to do away with Laurie but a vision of Georgina spooked him and he smashed into a mirror, dying of glass wounds. So there was a supernatural element. I wonder if the Brody character in the credits was Eric Brody?
