Great watch !  I'm reminded how far the show had moved away from the Ryans during this period…Not a trace of the Ryans.  This episode bares no resemblance to the original Ryan’s Hope.

Traci Lin is much more compelling than I remember.  Wonder what she would have accomplished if she had stuck it out...

Scott Holmes is much more appealing here than on ATWT.  His Tom Hughes was always kinda sour.

Grant Show sure did come along way.  His biggest talent here is his chest.

Cali Timmins Cali Timmins Cali Timmins…What a star !  I really enjoyed Maggie as the show's heroine.  I wish she had done more work after she left daytime.  But she found love on RH with Geoff Pierson -- that’s probably better than a career.

Cali was the only Paulina for me on AW.  Was Judi Evans such a “name” that Cali was fired for her?  Judi basically played an entirely different character.  She could’ve been Nancy!

So around '84 is when things get bad?

They are pretty rough in 1981 too, although at least we know the characters.

Going by ratings, I'd say 1982.

June 8, 1981 to October 5, 1984 Ryan's Hope time slot rival was Y&R.

Ryan's Hope was competitive vs. Y&R until June 1982.

Remainder of 1982 Ryan's Hope falls and Y&R rebounds from their post-expansion slump. 1983 Y&R blew up and we know the rest.

81 and 82 were rather bad, with the infamous invasion of the Kirkland family. But sometime in late 82 or early 83, Claire Labine was rehired as head-writer and immediately put the focus back on the Ryan's. This time Labine's tenure was short, but she did great work. The entire show was compelling again -- especially the Charlotte Greer storyline (one of the best plots of the entire series).  But Labine was fired, yet again, and Ryan's Bar was bombed, resulting in most of the action being transferred to Greenberg's Deli, and a focus on younger characters with little connection to the Ryan family. So that is what you are probably seeing from 84.

Thanks for the well-detailed reply. I'm fairly early in my viewing, so I have some time before it goes nuts. Thanks a lot! @kalbir and @DRW50 thank you so much. I am just approaching 100 episodes, so I'm good for now.

I also do not like the bits I've seen with Delia during Labine's 83 return. I am glad when she came back for the last time in 1986, she allowed Delia to move on from Frank.

Regardless, I'd still like to see more episodes from the 80s...there is very little of Charlotte Greer, Kirklands and Greenberg's out there sadly.

I've mentioned it before, but Helen's acceptance speech for No, No, Nanette is incredibly touching.

It is. And it's even more remarkable that this feels like an end-of-career speech when she had no idea a whole second career was on the way.

I was going through some old UK commercials and saw this one that has Ilene Kristen. A nice surprise.

I know it's controversial but I actually didn't hate the Kirkland invasion. I didn't like how when Labine returned she basically disregarded everything to reset the show to where she left it. I think she could've made the Kirkland family (and Rae and Kimberly) work in a more balanced world of Ryan's Hope.

I have not seen most of the Kirkland period before Labine returned, but her repeatedly trying to go back to factory settings with characters like Delia or Pat/Faith do hold the show back for me. At least she didn't in her last return.
