If the above from last week was a new low in total viewers and the total viewers for OLTL this week is 6. OLTL 2,898,000 (-3,000/-233,000), then didn't OLTL hit yet another new low in total viewers? Also didn't they hit a new series low for the 18-34?

OLTL certainly deserved those numbers. The past weeks, the contract negotiations were far more dramatic than the show -- I'm curious what will happen when the stories written around those negotiations hit the screen.

Around 1999 or so, if we only count the soaps still on air, the approximate viewership numbers were:

Y&R: 8 million

B&B: 5.6 million

Days: 5.4 million

GH: 4.9 million

ATWT: 4.7 million

GL: 4.6 million

AMC: 4.2 million

OLTL: 3.9 million

Compare that to today's numbers:

Y&R: 5.6 million

B&B: 4.1 million

GH: 3.4 million

ATWT: 3.1 million

AMC: 3 million

OLTL: 2.9 million

GL: 2.8 million

Days: 2.6 million

Days has lost over 50% of its audience since 1999, whereas Y&R has lost 30% which is no more or less than most soaps have. Total viewership in 1999 (if you count the cancelled AW and SB) was around 48 million, total viewership in 2007 is around 29 million or a loss of around 40%

A further comparison is that in 1999, Days had around 67% of the viewers Y&R had whereas in 2007 it's 46%

I'm sure you'll find that the rate of decline from 1989 to 1999 wasn't as sharp as it's been from 1999 onwards.

Thanks Rick. Days is paying actors they are not using. I don't understand this for any of the soaps. If a vet has a guarantee, even 1 episode per week or XX in a cycle, why not at least use the minimum that you are paying? Fans seem to want to see these characters and you don't have any money by not using them the minimum amount of episodes. I think what has been show has been a creative decision more than a financial one.

Kristin Alfonso's contract is up this month. It is not uncommon for the writers to 'clear the slate' before writing for them just in case the actor does not re-sign. Kristen's contract could have inadvertently effected Peter Reckell or vice versa as Peter's contract is up in Aug.

There were to be certain reveals last Nov. but DAYS could not come to terms with Joe Mascolo. Perhaps John can't come out of coma until the reveal in May. I also wonder if Drake's absence is due in part to the unfortunate run in with that crazed stalker. Maybe everyone thought it wasn't necessary for Drake to come in just to film dream sequences. And if that is what they had written up for John/Marlena it explains Deirdre's missing as well. Instead if rewriting and allowing for filler they just gave her some time off.

But what kind of faith does that give you in your show or in your actors that they will resign? Instead of having a story in place ready to go DURING negotations, they stall your story. And unless Kristian or Peter really need the money, why would they want to stay on a show where they are not getting a storyline and where they are probably gonna get low-balled come negotiation time?

Everyone knows that most of the time in soaps when they don't give you a story or take you character on vacation or put them in a coma, they are probably gonna try to negotatiate your new contract for less. If Kristian and Peter's contracts are both up this year, instead of waiting for negotiations, if they had any plans to want to keep them in the future for what they are worth, they would have placed them in a frontburner story from the get-go. Why wait for boht Peter AND Kristian's contracts to be renewed to give them a story?

I don't even really like the Big Four, but they are greatly missed right now on DAYS. There's no excuse why no one can't write for them.

No offense but DAYS I think will not rise. It has been the WROST show!!! It has been falling and it is going to be hard to get it back up. Theres np way unless the world has gona crazy. DAYS is in a major slump and I don't feel bad for them. They deserve these numebers and if they get cancelled which I am hoping for it's there own fault.

On a good note All My Children is rising! YAY!! They are great right now with the balance, vets coming back and actual storylines i enjoy! Good for them!!

That's so much bullsh!t, I can smell it from here.

When a show is in a slump, the only good fix it to cancel it? Should AMC have also been cancelled when it was in a creative slump? OLTL? GL? I don't understand why anyone would wish cancellation on any long-running daytime soap at the moment, because a blow to one is a blow to all -- especially considering that Days is an iconic show, one of "the big three." When one wishes cancellation on another soap rather than just hoping for it to get better, it says to me that a viewer of a different soap just wants less competition so their show can take all the shine. Let your show gain its own glory rather than winning it all by default.

I'm gonna trust that when you use that phrase, you're copying it from somebody else. Who was the one who took it upon themselves to list the "big three" soaps? There's no such thing. Almost all of the soaps on the air have experienced a long period of extremely wild popularity.

ETA: Oh, and ITA with your post.

    • I'm anticipating most of the cast at the Nice location for a few weeks a la the Tuscan villa for Victoria and Ashland's wedding. I don't know why they bother. I'd rather see the money going into more regular home/office sets. This party has been a bust. No secrets revealed, break ups  etc. Ugly decorations and I'm going to slam the costuming again. Just the guests heaping praise on  Nikki  like she's achieved some magnificent milestone rather than just getting a year older.

In the loving arms of his wife, Dr. Marlena Evans, John took his last breath at the end of the June 2 episode, after suffering devastating internal injuries during a lab explosion. The iconic character went out as he lived — a hero. Sensing the fans’ devastation on Monday, Marlena’s portrayer Deidre Hall posted this simple-but-powerful message to fans on Instagram: “I know. I know. Hardest day ever.”

    • Now coming into June...well...   I knew it was coming but I didn't like the start to the next round of Dani/Bill/Hayley. As the 3 A plots from the start of the show (The SilkPress storyline and Martin's Secret being the other two), it needed to be benched for a while to develop those characters and allow other characters and storylines to grow. 3 months in, Hayley is the weak link, Dani is still divisive, but not boring, and Bill has been making his mark with some plots faster than others. So last week seeing the story starting to loop back around to them with Hayley's potential pregnancy, I honestly had mixed feelings.   I get it. The SilkPress storyline is currently in aftermath/next turn mode, so it has to be moved into a C plot position. Moreso if we want to keep the very talented Miss Trish around. And I love how clever the writers are being with the storyline. They give us enough in the episodes and are still playing out beats to keep the appetite fed. I don't feel like anyone is being dumbed down to keep her around. And Trish is giving nuances in her alone scenes with NuTed. I shouldn't care for a clear psycho, but she be selling it. That said...I wish they had given us a little more of the Martin's Secret storyline in the last week of the month though I loved the game of cat and mouse Bill did on Martin and Smitty to keep the storyline alive and active after it had a nice build beginning of May and vanished for a week mid-May. And it appears like it's about to go back to the backburner as an A plot which of course leaves the A plot of Dani/Bill/Hayley.   I am probably in the minority as someone who is not anti-Dani here and even she annoyed the heck out of me last week. In character true, but I just felt like there was a way to get all of that across without it feeling like...as I've said before...one step forward, two steps back...and have it feel organic. I liked Hayley got a little bit of edge with her, but she still ain't no match for Dani. And it reminds to be seen if we should be going back to that well of a story yet.   Now about today's show...   And I thought Tracy was bad! lol. But YES. Sharon has been worth the wait. And so has Anita's story! Finally having TT in the limelight. This has been a nice slow burn for me and a nice B plot. And the actress is good. The wig is giving. And her holding what Anita's secret is over her head and threatening to tell Vernon....Ooooo...that is what I was waiting for.    And speaking of bad...I thought Eva vs Kat was a great rivalry. But I am loving the rivalry that is growing with 'Nancy Drew' and Silk Press Sheila! They both get good licks in and are so cunning with each other. And I definitely have liked that since the anniversary party, that it has been growing. Now that Kat has been proven right, she has not backed down. And neither has SilkPress. And we got a 'Ms. B@tch' moment, too? LOVE. Eva coming up with a trump card was delicious and so 90s Sami Brady. GOOD. And the coda with Jacob and the expert...YES. The Silk Press storyline has been the best paced on the show so I love that the aftermath of the anniversary party continues to be so...barring one flaw...well for me. Not enough Nicole's POV.   And I like the C plots on display. And by that, I mean Chelsea with Vernon. And it made me wonder what the writers have plan for her love life now that the throuple is over with. I was watching her and going awww.   And of course the mystery man around Martin. I am starting to wonder if he really even works at the country club given how he made a run for it. That would be a twist.    Speaking of Martin...good to see him in scenes with his father and mother.    I'm getting used to NuTed.    I felt the last episode of May was a bit of a letdown, but this was a very nice recovery.
    • Unless they cut him, I'd think he would stay. Surely, he didn't choose to return because he expected high quality. I figure he gets to work when he wants and spend a lot of time doing his own thing and being with his family.
    • The writing for Liz and Lucky is indeed terrible, but if JJ signed a one-year contract he may be gone in a couple of months anyway. Perhaps they’re just cutting their losses.
    • That would be his older sister Stacey. She was the center of a big story back in the day. Nola was out to snag medical student Kelly Nelson, who she thought would provide her with the life she craved. He was in love with a girl named Morgan. Nola plotted to get pregnant by him, but couldn't manage to get him in bed. So she seduced Floyd, who thought she was in love with him. When she knew she was pregnant, she got Kelly drunk and made sure he woke up next to her in bed. Kelly believed her when she told him he made her pregnant. They were about to elope to Las Vegas, but her mother ratted her out and Kelly abandoned her. She almost married Floyd, but jilted him at the altar. She went to work for Quint. When the baby came prematurely, Kelly saved both of them. She named the baby Kelly Louise to irk Morgan, who was now married to Kelly. When she fell in love with Quint, she had a change of heart over all the trouble she had caused, so she changed the baby's name to Anastasia Louise, shortened to Stacey. Quint was a devoted stepfather and Henry treated her like his own granddaughter.  After Quint and Nola leave SF, I believe Stacey is never seen again. Which is odd, you would think they would have brought her back with Nola and J, but they never did.
