ALL: Sex and Suffering in the Afternoon

I just found this article, and have been reading it. I love the history in and thought I would post it over here. I remember the article years ago. I don't remember if it is the one where Bill & Susan Hayes were on the cover or not. I do not that it was a cover article for Time magazine.

It was titled Sex and Suffering in the Afternoon. (dated Jan 12, 1976)

from http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/...13850-1,00.html

Of course you know me I ate up all the Another World stuff. Loved all the other too, but my heart belongs to Another World especially from the 1970's.

It amazes me that even in 1976 writers made that much money. I know that we only hear rumors these days about how much money the writers and producers actually make but I can almost guarantee you they are still making more than the actors are.

I have preached it before and I will preach it again, I find it so funny and deplorable that we continue to read about performers being asked to take pay cuts to save the show but you never read or hear about producers or writers doing the same.

It makes me angry that we are losing the talents of daytime like Julia Barr and Stuart Damon who are being cut due to the budget while hacks like Passanante, McTavish & Higley and mediocre writers like Brad Bell, Kreizman, Guza, Sheffer, and Latham keep chugging along and being paid the big bucks. When is it their turn to take a pay cut or to take one for the team.

I get so tired of fans too who think that performers shouldn't have a problem with taking recurring just so the show can stay on the air. There are people out there who actually say that Julia Barr wasn't fired - the show offered her recurring and she should have been happy with that.

I don't blame any actor out there who doesn't agree to those terms. I say more power to them. I know if I had been with a company for 30 years and they suddenly wanted to take my benefits away, and say we will call you if we need you, and expect me to take one for the team. My response would be only if you do too.

Recurring is an insult to a performer like Julia Barr, Suzanne Rogers, Jerry Ver Dorn, Peggy McKay, etc. who have put in years and years with a show - years and years of loyalty. They stayed there and pushed story along while many of the more popular stars came and used the show and then jumped off for bigger and better things.

There is the occasion when a performers asks for recurring himself, but it is rare. Most actors want to work and they want security just like you and me.

Well end of rant about that. I just hope one day someone like McTavish or Frons sees one of these posts and sees that there are fans out there who tired of losing our performers just so their pockets can get fatter. To me it is TPTB are the biggest problems with soaps today. It is the talented performers who are turning the s*it they write into gold on our screens almost every day.

Preach it my brother!!

Yes it is so disrespectful, we often forget these people are at "work." This is their career, what if you worked full time, 40 hours a week for 30 years and then all of a sudden you were told, you're to old, you'll be replaced with a cheaper, unexperienced, lack of talen 20 year old and be given 5 hours a week. Screw off!! Is what I would tell them.

Believe me both Sheffer and Latham are overpaid for the stories they are putting out on their shows.

I know that you did too but I put up with Hogan for quite a few years over at ATWT, and to me only 2000 to 2001 were truly great. After that and still today is just a mediocre writer who has some good stories now and then but he is nothing special.

I remember the article very well. It mentioned about Edge of Night: "If Hell were a city, it'd be a lot like Monticello." That pretty much described mid-late 1970s Edge, which knew how to tell a good mystery and leave you hanging on the edge of your seat.

Regarding Sheffer: Compared with who occupied the writer's chair over the last few years, Hogan is the second coming of Jesus Christ. :)

Just hope that Days doesn't get as bad as ATWT did the last year under Hogan. If it does then you will rethink those words. His stuff the last year at ATWT was if not as bad was near as bad as what JER wrote. He got to where many of the vets he didn't even show, and many people were wondering whether some of them were still on staff.

I was reading some old stuff from a board from about 2004 during Hogan's last year, and believe there wasn't much nice being said about him on the message board.

The last 2 weeks on Days have reminded me very much of that last year - too much focus on one story with the rest used a filler and way too much focus on the younger set.

    • Yes. And I assume he met Mary Ellen Stuart at GL.
    • That's an odd coincidence. Yeah, Roger would turn anything he could to his advantage. At the time, he's just taking the pictures to bank leverage over Reva, Billy or the Lewises.  I'm kinda squeamish about 1986 episodes myself. I'd love to hear the original version of Ross/Vanessa/Dinah, but the Cain story is bad, and I don't want Billy and Vanessa to break up.
    • Eeek. I didn't know this either! I will say, though, even though they skimmed over a lot of Roger's past, I will give them props for not trying to turn him into a hero. Yeah, I was hoping we would get more 1986 episodes than were available on YT before, but now I'm wondering if I really want to see that.
    • That's what Julie Hanan Carruthers is doing for BTG at the new studio in Atlanta, but JHC is credited. And @errol said JHC is working in a nonproduction capacity at Y&R.
    • I remember when the whole Missy Reeves controversy started in 2012.  She tweeted support of a business that had made homophobic statements. Greg Rikaart (who was on Y&R back then) publicly called her out on it, but was willing to reach out and speak with her. Article here: https://greginhollywood.com/greg-rikaart-talks-about-his-twitter-war-with-fellow-soap-star-melissa-reeves-over-anti-gay-chick-fil-a-73139 That being said, ten years later, on DAYS, in 2022, when they had they double wedding of Leo/CraigWesley and Gwen/Xander, Jack and Jennifer came to the wedding.  At that time, Missy Reeves was only intermittently available for DAYS. Jennifer was living "in Boston" and Cady McClain and Missy were each intermittently appearing as Jennifer, on the specific occasions when the show required a Jennifer to appear. Missy wasn't on contract and she could have said no. But she chose to appear as Jennifer for the gay wedding of Greg Rikaart's character.   So... I mean... I would assume they reached a détente behind-the-scenes. Missy still has her belief system but there's that.
    • That was one of the best grandslam finals.  Alcaraz comes all the way back down 2 sets to 0, and three match points in the 3rd set, to win it in a 5th set tie-break.  And the quality of play was excellent - so many great shots.  What a battle!
    • Indeed. I may try to watch it in full sometime, but not anytime soon... Mark played Sean Baxter for a few episodes when Courtney married Andy. Burke was either on Broadway or at OLTL at that time, I suppose.
    • Well, Josh was a horndog. LOL Yep. It was one of the first really weird things Reva did with her PPD. She became obsessed with the idea that Dylan and Sam should get married. Sam was only 17, and needed her parent's permission. Reva helped them leave town so they could go to a neighboring state where Sam was old enough. Ross, Billy and Josh stopped them, then Sam went to India to try and persaude Justin. Reva followed her and didn't tell Josh she was going. While Reva was gone, Josh advertised for nannies, and Harley applied. He ended up hiring someone else. But when Reva returned, she hired Harley because (in her weird mental state) she wanted someone she could trust with the kids (because she feared Josh was trying to get rid of her and that Vanessa wanted the children.). After Reva starts treatment, she asks Harley to stay until she's stronger because she's good with the kids. At the party, Reva starts going off the rails, insulting Justin and Josh hauls her to a private dining room to ask WTF. Reva starts confronting him about the "affair" with Vanessa, and he realizes she is weird. He locks her in the dining room and frees Mindy and Van from the ladies room (where Reva has locked them in). Van starts telling him that Reva attacked her and needs help.  Reva escapes out the window of the dining room and goes back to the party, climbs onto a table and starts a striptease. Josh gets her to stop, takes her home and after filling Ed in, decides to go to the doctor the next day. Reva then takes off and spends days running around town, coming on to a guy she thinks is Billy, Billy, Hamp, Frank and Roger.  Roger takes her to his apartment and takes nude pictures of her, which he tries to blackmail Billy with. He wants the deed to the land the Towers is on in exchange for them. (Billy had been left the deed by a sweet old lady who lost her home in the 5th street fire. Roger had stolen the deed from her before she died. After Roger took those pics of Reva, she saw him hide them, and took an envelope from the hiding place. She didn't realize she'd taken the deed and not the pictures.)  Anyway, Billy and Vanessa trick Roger into burning the pictures, claim the deed and at the Towers opening reveal that Billy owns the land and therefore the Towers. That's what led to Roger and Alex's breakup and Roger and Mindy's affair. Mark Lewis was on ATWT? 1986 is not a good year, storywise. No bueno. Muy no bueno.
    • All the time they spent trying to make viewers feel sorry for Chad only for him to not even last that long. I wonder if they knew Richard Burgi was going so quickly. You're right about Josie replacing Cheryl. On paper, this should have made sense, given all the ties Josie had to the canvas, but I did prefer Cheryl. There was something very synthetic about Alexandra Wilson.  I suppose even if she did have some fans they were just so used to getting rid of people left and right, so she was more collateral damage. As you said above I do wonder what the plans were for Peggy Lazarus. I think AWHP mentioned her once telling Peter that Peggy Lazarus wasn't her real name. Maybe she would have been another Carl moll... Rebecca Hollen never did get her due in her soap roles.
