Is Passions being cancelled?

It won't because Megan's show was syndicated meaning that hour belonged to the affilates, not NBC. If NBC puts the 4th hour of today as a trade in for megan's show, then they are taking an hour from the affilates who make their money off of local advertising during syndicated show like Megan's. If NBC uses the hour that it already has for Passions as the 4th hour of today, then the affilates wouldn't have to give up anything. NBC would just be using an hour that is already theirs.

Since it is Variety, it probably true. They are the bible in the entertainment industry. They were also the first publication to confirm that Hogan was going to be the new HW at Days.

Yeah and OJ didn't do it.

I don't know why DAYS fans seem to have a really positive outlook on the Hourglass's future because of PASSIONS's cancellation. As I have said earlier, NBC will NOT pour money into advertising a one-soap lineup. It just ain't gonna happen. DAYS would have to drastically improve in the ratings between now and the time PASSIONS is cancelled. And I'm talking giving B&B serious competition for #2. Could it happen? Yes. But not under a cancel-happy network like NBC.

I'm not trying to be the Debbie Downer of the group or anything, but the writing is on the wall for DAYS as far as I'm concerned. It wouldn't surprise me at all if affiliates dropped both NBC soaps when PASSIONS is cancelled. Maybe not an O&O station, but surely some of the local affiliates where DAYS doesn't perform well for them will drop it in favor of another talk show, court show, or probably Syndie DEAL OR NO DEAL(not sure if they got a new host since Howie's not gonna do it or if they scrapped it altogether).

And NBC, being the heartless network it is, won't force affiliates to air it like they did PASSIONS. Why? Because, again, they don't own it.

PASSIONS had no effect on DAYS's ratings, you all are totally right about that. But PASSIONS staying with DAYS is the sole reason why NBC hasn't given up on soaps altogether, because, unlike AW, NBC was able to leech off of whatever audience would stick around after DAYS and make more money from it than higher-rated AW. Now that they barely make a profit off of soaps(especially a soap lineup that they don't have part ownership of), NBC won't care about DAYS, unless it is competing with B&B for #2. If it is continuing to stay middle of the pack, NBC won't want to stick with it, neither will it force affiliates to air it.

But doesn't the contract that NBC signed with Sony last spring regarding days legally bind them to air Days till 2009. I am sure that if NBC were just to drop Days, Sony has a clause in their contract where they could sue NBC.

ETA: And why wouldn't NBC pour money into advertising Days? Don't they already do that? I see primetime promos for Days all the time but I never see them for Passions. It seems to me that NBC already pour way more money into Days than it does with Passions.

Sony has a contract with NBC, NOT NBC affiliates. Unless NBC puts pressure on them to air DAYS, I don't see all of the affiliates doing it, especially those affiliates that hate soaps. ABC also had a contract with PGP to air EDGE. When most of the affiliates in the country announced they would no longer air EDGE in New Year 1985, PGP knew this would reduce the amount of ad money the show would receive, so they were forced to pull the plug. And, as a pre-emptive strike, ABC cancelled it as well. Talk about a harmony hard to find.

Maybe you have seen more ads for DAYS than PASSIONS. I spend my primetime hours keeping up with MyNetworkTV and SOAPnet. This is purely speculations from a soap fan, nothing else.

And even though they are pouring money into promoting DAYS now, that could very well change once 4th Hour TODAY airs. NBC will want to put the daytime budget towards pushing this redundant hour of trash. And if 4th hour TODAY does well? Well, let's just hope it doesn't.

ETA: If NBC has already put feelers out that they may be done with soaps in 2009, I can't see affiliates wanting to build their afternoon lineup around a soap they KNOW will be cancelled in two years.

It's all up to NBC. NBC has got to tell affiliates to stick with DAYS, otherwise, they will stray(just like they did with AW, SB, & BEACH)

I have been thinking....and I want to stay positive but I am quite frightened now. Sure this might all be false but this Passions cancellation rumour or whatever it is now is getting alot of publicity.....and now several places are saying it's a big possiblity. Has Passions ever had this much cancellation publicity before? I know there have been internet rumours but these are much bigger.

    • For a show that can seem allergic to drama, that was a surprisingly juicy moment, and much as I hate the term, actually very "soapy." It does seem like something where the beats that need to be played out may not be, so the reveal being as dramatic as it was is a great help. I like that Gio is the one who had that reveal, which was an unexpected twist. And the Nurses' Ball being used for drama but not in a way that felt gross (like a sex tape) or inappropriate (like a serial killer). It helps that Gio is easy to care about when used properly, so we feel bad for him and are invested in his reaction. And it was even in a sweeps period. I do wonder why this didn't happen on a Friday instead of a Thursday. Points to Rena Sofer, who was acting for her life in the background.  I'm glad the director remembered that Ned should have some involvement too.
    • Read her, Mona!!!!!!! And DEAD at 'Good talk.'   Hahahahaha! Of course, Nosy Nurse is listening in to Nicole and NuTed.   And Kat looks great in that red.   Hold up, hold up!!! Is that DEREK with attitude??
    • I've always had faith in Mazza so I'm glad that was a bit rewarded. I think he could've been slightly less loud and I did think the whole bit with smashing the violin was a bit much. While Lulu being both brash and a busybody is 100% in character, I have suspected for some time that making her the well-intentioned but obnoxious heavy opposite Setton/BLQ is not a coincidence on FV's part. Nonetheless, Alexa is great.
    • Tracy's scenes were after June's. Interesting. Just a guess, but Anita was probably to Dante what Diana Ross was to Berry Gordy. Leslie just steps up the crazy each episode. Why was she stealing things out of the hotel room? On a technical note, is Keith wearing the clothes that Maurice wore? That jacket was huge on him and clearly the wrong size. I'm surprised production would let anyone go onscreen looking like that.
    • Y'all could be right that it wasn't Henry Slesar.  But I think it's mighty strange that Russell Kubeck popped in as head writer with seemingly no previous writing credits or experience, then vanished into thin air once Somerset bit the dust.  And when you look at the subject matter of those last 6 months of Somerset combined with Slesar's previous tenure there under his own name --- I dunno.
    • I think there are, they just don't usually get as much of the spotlight. This has long been an issue with GH. It's a little better now than at some points in the past. Lulu at least gets called out for her mess, and Kristina, etc. although in Kristina's case she's just exhausting to watch, and the story is directionless (the biggest issue with the show).
    • It's tiimmmmmmmmmmmmmeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Aw Hell no...not Silk Press Sheila trying to suck up to Mona.   Yaayyyy!!! Nosy Nurse!!!   NICOLE!!!   Andre looking FOINE in that vest.    NOPE to NuTed in that coat. Tbf that started off that way. I do wonder if that will continue to be an issue going forward.   Same. I really would love if it kept going.
    • The ratings the last few months seemed to hover between the high 4s and mid 5s with an occasional off week when it would almost hit 6.0. Ironically the last week the show was on the air, it did hit 6.2 so it proved that people were available to watch the show.. but had fallen off due to the constant change in focus. It's possible that maybe the final writer was Henry Slesar considering the more crime slant the show took in the final months... but why work against your other show.
    • I have some catching up to do, so I'll come back with more later, but I am watching yesterday's episode... Andre/Derek/Ashely have not sat well with me since day 1, and I can't believe I'm going to say this...but if two had to go, I would pick Ashley and Andre. I cringed at Andre blowing smoke up Ashley's ass and making it seem like she couldn't possibly have done anything wrong to drive Derek away and that if he was in Derek's place, he would never walk out on Ashley because Ashley is just so flawless

Like whhhhaatttt? The girl is sitting there with a mountain of tissues crying over a basic argument that she could easily pick up the phone and end. Sean Freeman's acting choices bother me a bit...they have from the beginning which makes me dislike the character even more. I don't get Andre's obsession with an overgrown "Miss Perfect" like Ashley. Ashley reminds me of the good girl that grew up super sheltered and tried to do well at everything and wanted everything to be a certain way. She's bland. Mama is as spicy as warm milk yet Andre is all over that. Then he's always exhaling that last word and scrunching up his nose and pouting his lips in his Mr. Rogers sweaters and it just makes me mad.
