  1. Thanks so much @Huntress a lot of its very similar to this country in terms of anti immigrant bias and the areas it's most prominent in. I dont know know how factual, maybe you can fill in the blanks, but I read, and now can't remember where the article was, that the eastern part of Germany specifically was targeted by Russian propaganda and that that segment of the county in particular has been heavily resistant to any refugee resettlement.
  2. This is a bit terrifying. I never believed the movement was dead but with the recent Labour wins over the Tories in the UK, the Austrian, Dutch, and French Elections, and the extreme right in France in turmoil, I was not expecting this particularly in Germany. I suspect the arrival of so many refugees had to be a major factor. Germany was not prepared for that and it's been handled badly. But frankly Germany is the last place I expected this. And Macron has decided to pattern himself after Merkel . I'm not sure gutting labor laws is what he should be doing at this point.

Young? Bila is 38 years old, hardly ancient. And I am sorry McCain is not a reasonable voice like Bila was. And the libertarian label is such a cop out. I think she probably scored lower with one focus group "Trump Voters" because she dared to not kiss his ass and called him out on areas that should be non partisan. I wonder if her criticism of Mike Huckabee ruffled some conservatives feathers, but it was in response to his scathing criticism of his appearance. I wonder if Whoopi is upset over this move. They have had fabulous ratings and the group has good chemistry. It could be she was angry over this move. How do any of us know if McCain will even gel with the rest of the group?
  4. The Democrats are taking black women for granted https://newrepublic.com/article/144901/democrats-taking-black-women-granted?utm_content=buffer3a406&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer
  5. John McCain is a no https://www.cnbc.com/2017/09/22/senator-john-mccain-says-he-cannot-support-graham-cassidy-obamacare-repeal-bill.html I am honestly surprised even based on his words before. Maybe his stmt is genuine or maybe he just doesn't want his legacy to be tarnished.
  6. Interesting because I thought I had troll1 on my block list. Well I do now.
  7. I don't know if people are watching the Ken Burns documentary on Vietnam. It's a lot more low key than his prior work, but he's using a lot of personal stories to frame it. It's incredibly powerful and it does make you realize how polarized this country was at the time.. Many of the same issues we see today we're framed in that era. Inequality, polarization, heightened domestic violence. Last night they covered Muhammad Ali and how his stand on registering for the draft cost him titles and his livelihood due to his stance on civil rights the famous quote " why should I serve a country that doesn't respect or treat me equally". Sound familiar. Also the gvmt lies about Vietnam and the war going back to the Truman administration. Ken Burns was interviewed last week by Charlie Rose and talked about how this country never really recovered from Vietnam or learned from it. Followed with Watergate, that's helped set our current political climate. I knew there were lies about the success in Vietnam, the propaganda McNamara spewed, and there are boxes of private memos to President Johnson where he shares his concerns and doubts, complete opposite to the public persona. What I didn't realize is that they had Nixons undermining of the peace process prior to the 1968 election recorded and Johnson knew and believed it was a treasonous act, but kept quiet thinking it would help fuel more anger and violence if made public. In hindsight it likely would have altered the 1968 election and perhaps history.
  8. Home this morning and honestly I don't know why I am watching Morning Joe and listening to them hammer The NY Times for their Clinton coverage while completely ignoring their own role in propping up Trump is just mind boggling. Onto another topic Anyone who has ever read the book Boss by Mike Royko and the Richard Daley(the first Mayor Daley of Chicago) knows how deep patronage was in his administration. Lots of buddies got jobs. But even with that, most of the people appointed had a modicum of knowledge.
  9. 18 months of hearings I had a pretty good idea. See those who bothered to read about it knew But I see trolls ignore the rest of the post and lies again BLOCKED
  10. Polling came out today and only 20% of Americans support this bill. It takes away PEC coverage, one of the most popular components of the ACA and something Trump promised he would keep, and guts Medicaid, a program Trump promised when he campaigned he would not cut. 40% of Trump voters support it which means 60% don't. It also kicks 32 million people off of healthcare, and puts the lifetime cap back in place another popular component of the ACA. People over 50 and people like me who are now self employed and have a PEC(I had breast cancer) would be penalized up the wazoo for insurance. People wanted the swamp drained but the real reason the GOP is pushing this thru is related to something again Trump promised he would get rid of = The swamp and big money interests. The Koch brothers told the GOP leadership in June and again in August that there is 400 million dollars for 2018 races that will not go to the GOP races if this doesn't happen. So damn the promises made by Trump, he's so dumb he doesn't know what's in the bill, worst of all doesn't care, and is only interested in a win regardless of what he promised on his campaign and told people he would do. It's all about erasing a black president. This has the potential to cause mass chaos in the healthcare industry. In Illinois we have rural hospital in the parts of the state that are red that rely on Medicaid and these hospitals for healthcare(white Trump voters by the way) who will suffer and die as a result. Many of these hospitals will have to close due to the Medicaid gutting.
  11. Maybe that's why John Kasich has been so outspoken. He comes across reasonable probably because the GOP has become a party of radicals. I was watching Chris Hayes yesterday(why who knows) Kasich was on talking about Healthcare. He actually spoke very favorably about the ACA but one thing he did talk about was how important bipartisanship is because if all you do is overturn legislation the other party passes every 4 or 8 years, who are you helping. He was pointing to the GOP this go around but he also pointed to the ACA. Funny thing is Mr. Kasich is Obama picked RomneyCare as a model for the ACA because he wanted bipartisan support. There were over 200 GOP amendments added and not one GOPer voted for it. This time they aren't even talking to the democrats or going through normal process.
  12. Sanders should have waiting until after the deadline but they were unsuccessful IMO in weaponizing this. They did call for a vote on it last week and the democrats didn't show up because they knew it was going to be used as a wedge issue particularly for senators vulnerable in 2018; If their bill passes, it's going to be chaos. They don't know what's in it. If they think they can explain that using Sanders single payer talk let them. Now who got taken? Schumer and Pelosi because if that deal hadn't been struck that's what they would be working on right now the debt ceiling,.
  13. Off topic Thought some might be interested in this article on Ben Sasse, who IMO is now like a smarter version of do nothing Rubio. Lots of praise and has done nada https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2017/07/the-wasted-mind-of-nebraska-sen-ben-sasse.html
  14. We cause most of these refugee crisis and then don't extend help. Disgusting.

So Jedidiah was also responsible for Rachel Maddows highest ratings and Anderson Coopers. It certainly could not have been who THEY ADVERTISED was going to appear that day. I like Bila but GMAB. She asked a couple of tougher questions(fair) but she didn't savage Clinton as people are assuming good grief.
  16. JaneAusten replied to YRBB's topic in Off Topic Lounge
If that's the case I'll be the first one to call BS, But it sounds to me something ginned up by the "Hillary is always guilty before innocent" crowd. Clinton was not taken aback by the question I think she actually acknowledged that her campaign missed the change aspect. (Although no one is going to convince me it wasn't racism but that's a totally different discussion), I still think it might be tied to Whoopi, although I have not noticed any specific problems, but I saw someone comment today that she was yelling at Sonny on camera,
  17. JaneAusten replied to YRBB's topic in Off Topic Lounge
Well if that's true - I don't know what to say. The 2 best conservative voices they had, Wallace and Bila, both gone. What on earth was problematic with her HRC interview or is it someone trying to stir things up for Hillary again. I wonder if there was a problem with Whoopi Goldberg?
  18. JaneAusten replied to YRBB's topic in Off Topic Lounge
So what exactly happened because didn't they all just re-sign? I don't watch the show much - late at night on occasion, but while I disagree with her on just about everything, she's definitely reasonable and intelligent and brought value to the panel.
  19. It really pisses me off (taking away how many people this is going to hurt) because democrats there in the senate have not been paying attention because of the Bernie Sanders BS. I actually think Single Payer is the way to go, but we are not getting there with the GOP in power so our energy needs to be spent protecting what we have. I expect people in the senate to do the same thing and not wasting crap on whether Trump likes them or not.
  20. Well this bill is supposed to strip even more people but I think it's likely it will pass. And I do hope after all this people STFU about McCain the maverick who claims to want regular order back but will likely toe the line here. I believe that McCain will toe the line as this is the last chance to do it. None of these people really care what's in the bill except for maybe Collins and Murkowski
  21. African Americans only racial group making less then they did in 2000 https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/09/15/african-americans-are-the-only-racial-group-in-u-s-still-making-less-than-they-did-in-2000/?tid=sm_tw&utm_term=.77a90c74d309
  22. Yikes stay safe. That's a long time without power. Hope u have all u need in the meantime. I read about that nursing home tragedy and it made me wonder if that was a power outage issue, until I read there is a hospital those folks could have easily gone to right across the street. Tragic And yesterday the senate voted to continue to give th executive branch the powers granted to Bush 43 after 9/11. I don't agree with Rand Paul on much but all he was asking for was a debate on the issue and it was shut down. Congress should be the body making war decisions including what is considered military action. Yes WW2 and 9/11 granted the exec branch expanded powers but that was rescinded after the war. Now with an unstable dementia ridden president why would they not even consider a debate. Because they trust the generals? As long as the impact of our militarization is pushed to the side, we illl continue to turn our heads away from the US's not so hidden desire for imperialism, ironically something Churchill was criticized for by Roosevelt. But of gravest concern is giving this president surrounded by some very questionable staff this kind of latitude.
  23. There may be some flaws, but frankly I don't think it's that inaccurate. We had the Supreme Court for example gut the VRA and we see what's happened since, And there are other factors that support this to some extent. First the wage gap between women and men is still anywhere from 30% when holding exactly the same position. So if women are still being disciminated in terms of wages it's not hard to believe it's impacting African Americans also, Next the young black men aspect is in some sense supported by the fact that statistically, unemployment in the young black male community exceed the young white male community by double digits. Gentification in urban communities could be partially responsible for this combined with the lack of large businesses unwilling to move into those communities. The study also indicated that the data tracked has primarily been at point of hire and there is very little tracking after the fact. So it's possible there is a large bias in terms of upward mobility, There certainly still is for women.
  24. Yes and IMO it's dementia and he's deteriorating before our eyes. There was once a time where he could cover some of this. He's no longer capable. It's the real reason IMO that Ivanka and Jared are there.
  25. I don't know how people here feel about this but today Sanders and 13 democrats announced support of "Medicare for All". I had mixed feelings at one time, but after reading about California's recent attempts on Single Payer and a wonderful article and detailed layout of the plan in the LA Times, I think I am on board. I think the plan they are proposing is too aggressive a timeline, and I think the approach Chris Murphy is talking about, in transitioning to it by first giving age brackets a public option on the health exchanges might be a better managed transition over time. The questions on paying for it came up in California of course, but the consensus was ultimately a single payer model will save money for the insured and businesses. Immediately no, over time yes. Even my republican buddy in Indiana believes it's the way to go as well as our financial advisor, who has been adamant that the free market is it, is now an advocate. The new GOP plan which allegedly has some GOP Governor support(no clue who since I believe Kasich is a no) seems to have zero traction and McConnell has no interest in investing what little capital he has left to try and rally votes for it. Plus it hasn't been scored yet and the CBO will take about 10 days to do it. It's ironic that it has McCain's support who allegedly voted no the last time because he felt they should go back to standard process and practice. This new version does none of that. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/09/13/us/politics/health-care-obamacare-single-payer-graham-cassidy.html
