After leaving my teaching job 2 years ago, I am substituting this school year and have now worked every day because of the teaching shortage as a defacto math teacher. I am not looking for a full time position at this point and the subbing fits well into my other work, but they are desperate for teachers everywhere. People don't realize we have a shortage in this country for teachers and many states have been hiring outside of the US for years due to this. DACA recipients are actually one of the more ideal solutions, people educated and raised here, to fill many of those roles. The current bill being proposed for DACA gives them a path to become citizens, which is in fact what they already are in almost all categories except the one that makes it legal. Ryan is a coward and has been ineffective his entire tenure in congress. He's the Marco Rubio of the House, built up by the media as some wonder boy but just another empty suit. But I can't blame him in entirety for this. Trump ran on repeal and replace and promised he had a better plan. Their "replace" could have passed if it was in fact better. But Ryan and McConnell should have educated Trump that you don't shove down a plan that impacts 1/5 of the economy without hearings and transparency. Or maybe Trump should have made a point of knowing they never ever had any intention of repealing and replacing the ACA. It was a political strategy that has now backfired on them.

I don't think I said all Americans, but there are many who blame minorities and women for their fortunes. I have 2 in my own family who talk about those lazy so and so's. 1 in fact who blamed a 'wetback' (his words not mine) for taking a job he was allegedly up for. And I watched for years as these 2 young white males(my nephews) were given every opportunity by their parents and grandparents - money schooling support- to help give them a lift up. They are both working now in decent jobs, but still hold a lot of animosity. These are young white males who themselves did grow up privileged and many of their friends are the same. And these are not older white males, but younger. I think there are likely a lot more of these folks than many of us want to believe. I hope I am wrong. Reagan gave amnesty to over 2 million immigrants and simultaneously stopped going after businesses for employing illegal immigrants. This has been a problem long time coming. But I am not convinced deportation is the answer. I would say that the majority of the undocumented folks are contributing, helping out GDP, paying taxes. We should be doing better than a deportation force and be working on giving everyone some sort of path to legal residency either permanent or temporary. My guess is it won't happen because there are too many people influencing politics in this country who want the slave labor and don't mind a few being sent back.- The Politics Thread
If this *uckhead wants a wall, he can raise the money for it. Not one fricking dime for something he CLAIMED Mexico would pay for. Another lie from this incompetent grifter. On the subject of DACA I fully believe it should be legislated. Congress has gotten off easy the past 7 years criticizing Obama and not DOING ANYTHING. See replacing Obamacare as the prime example. When all you do is talk and obstruct, that's not leading.- The Politics Thread
If Americans are not lazy or incurious(and not all are) why the blame on immigrants stealing their jobs? There are over 4 million skilled jobs available in this country. Not migrant jobs. We don't have enough skilled people to fill them. Whose fault is that? I had a very interesting discussion with my sister in law who is from the Philippines and she talked about certain immigrant groups skirting the law. She didn't understand how actively our government ignores businesses who employ these people, they aren't fined anymore, how busloads of Mexican immigrants somehow get across the border - busses at the behest of meat packing plant businesses, construction businesses, that go into Mexico, all for the less than fair labor rate. But dreamers are not those people. These are the people we claim we want immigrating. Well educated skilled people, doctors, nurses, businesspeople, contributing to our economy, people helping to fill those 4 million jobs some white Americans don't want to strive for. I'm not suggesting everyone can and should goto college, but these 4 million jobs require skills that it seems many Americans don't have and people who seem to believe that a GED or HS diploma is enough to get you a job to support a family of 4. For someone with initiative yes. But not for people who want to blame black and brown people and women for their misfortunes and inability to find work. I realize the issues are more complex, but hell, we have refugees from Somalia and Syria who have come into this country in recent years and help turn around communities like Buffalo and Pittsburgh, but some white guys feels they are "owed" a living. I admire the former coal miners in West Virginia trying to start a tech company of former miners running into road blocks due to lack of a tech infrastructure, but I frankly can't empathize with some who are fully capable of helping themselves, blaming others. Those same kind of people said Jews were not German and had no problem when Germany took away their citizenship in the 1930's. Is that really the country we want to become. I frankly hate to think of what those detention centers holding undocumented folks close to the border are doing to these folks.- The Politics Thread
Let's be honest. Trump rescinded DACA because he doesn't care. He doesn't care about anyone other than himself. He doesn't care about the KK or white supremacists or the working white men who voted for him who will see their taxes increased while Trumps go down, he doesn't care about middle to upper middle class white people who voted for him because of taxes who might now see their 401K contributions taxed to pay for rich people tax cuts. Despite the media and press continuing to try and humanize him, I wish they would stop the attempts which seem almost like pleas to me. He's 71 and not changing. And he is surrounded by people like Jeff Sessions who are as bad or worse than he is. In terms of DACA do people remember why we have it? Because a DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS AND SENATE could not get it passed. Even with 3 GOPers voting with democrats, 5 democratic senators voted against it. Executive Orders should not be used to legislate. I'm not blaming Obama, he did what he could, but congress has done NOTHING since the GOP took control and continues to do nothing. Let them figure this out. At the end of the day it's a lose lose for them in the short term but it's a decent and moral thing to do. Let's see if there are enough of them left to do something positive for once well at least something.- The Politics Thread
Well Paul Ryan said himself the other day it should be a congressional issue. So let them fix it permanently. Question is will they and risk losing their KKK base(although where would the KKK go?) If they don't do something they risk losing the Latino vote for good. It's funny how there seems to be no memory of what a disaster Proposition 187 was for the GOP in California. The ramifications are still being felt 20 years later.- The Politics Thread
With all the wretched crap going on (I have been participating in a phone bank to save DACA for several weeks now myself), some positive news. 1. May not seem like a big deal but the story around this is important. Despite the active campaigning against, the dems got the vote out and won this election. It's hopefully symbolic of things to come. I myself have been asked by a retiring trustee of our community and many residents to run for trustee in our community in 2019 our next local elections. My neighbor was elected to our local school board this past April. I am trying to absorb as much as I can. I am serving on 2 local committees and am shocked to be honest by the efforts of the resident volunteers(pleasantly so) and the laziness of our elected officials and even some of our paid village employees. Oh and our village manager just got a big hefty 25% raise and contact renewal. While our teachers continue with their agreed upon pay freeze year 3. Anyway here is the story about the Fairfax County election https://m.dailykos.com/stories/2017/8/29/1694453/-Trump-Just-Got-Slapped-In-The-Face-Landslide-Win-For-Democrats-In-Fairfax-County-Tonight 2. Our Governor in Illinois finally did something right. He signed 2 bills. The Trust Act is the state version of a sanctuary city and protects immigrants and mandates our police force(s) do not target immigrants, do not act as a sister ICE force, no profiling, and to work with immigrant communities. This from our do nothing GOP Governor is a big step He also signed the Auto Voter Registration Act in Illinois which is estimated to add new voters to our voter rolls by the 2018 election in the count of 1 million more people. Now the hard work, getting them to vote.- The Politics Thread

That ban should never have happened after the January ban was not upheld because it was only supposed to be for 90 days to strengthen up vetting procedures. Of course it's still in place likely until the Supreme Court hears the case because it was never about the vetting process to begin with or protecting the US citizens.- The Politics Thread
I am actually shocked that the war mongerers at the Times condemn this. It's one of my biggest issues with Obama. Now I love Obama but was not crazy about his continual enabling of Saudi Arabia and much of his foreign policy. Now we have an administration who has zero conscience and doesn't care about the biggest humanitarian crisis since WW2. But hey as long as the military industrial complex in this country can continue to make money off this and it's off the radar for most Americans who cares. What a sad commentary of our country. On a side note I remember reading that pre US entry to WW2, 85% of catholics and protestants in this country were against accepting refugees from Europe. And also 50% of Jewish folks in this country were also against it.- The Politics Thread

Apparently many of the scheduled speakers chickened out. So sad. I left home and had some errands to run this AM and turned on MSNBC for a second. Who is this dumb idiot woman they have on today? She follows Joy Reid. The questions from some of these so called news people are no better on MSNBC and CNN then they are on Fox. Actually worse. I can't believe how they rolled out Joy Reid onto all the high profile Sunday shows - on Meet the Press for example but she doesn't qualify for a daily show. Yeah we know why. She'd do a better on Meet the Press than Todd would. She's certainly more well read and intelligent.- The Politics Thread
I don't know if anyone saw this, but Stephanie Ruhle and Ari Velshi taking a Trump advisor to task about jobs numbers, stock market, business councils etc. I have to laugh. Velshi was right. Do any of these people actually get briefed when they appear on TV with folks like this to know when their speaking with? Both of these people have years in the financial industry and are business correspondents. This is not Jake Tapper or Chuck Todd. They actually know what they are talking about in this particular instance. The one who sounds misinformed is the Trumper. He does the same as all the surrogates. pivots. In this case his pivoting made him look worse because Ruhle and Velshi actually know more on all the pivot points than he does also. Sad.- The Politics Thread
