  1. You know I am no longer naïve about the democrats and their chances. You guys do know the democrats have been flipping elections all over the country. I feel like this idea that the Beltway media seems to have their pulse on the elections. I'm sorry but has anyone here looked to see how candidates are actually campaigning and talking to voters in THEIR districts, THEIR states outside of the Beltway focus? I'll be happy to share local articles here. In Il14 which is not considered a flappable district, a young African American nurse won the primary Lauren Underwood. The district is rural urban combination. She knows she needs to flip some moderates and needs independent support to win. Her opponent Randy Hultgren is unpopular wildly in his district. People all over the district care about public education they don't have charter schools, loads of private schools to choose from and Illinois is in financial crisis - our schools are. And rural areas. Farmers BELIEVE IN CLIMATE CHANGE. They see the impact daily. They are fearful of tariffs, our environmental policies, and their crop insurance is skyrocketing. And the main issue across the district is healthcare. One of our members asked her about Trump. She doesn't talk to them at all about that unless they want to discuss and they do when it relates to things he committed to helping them with and now realize he s not. And healthcare is not just about individual coverage, its about employers. The second largest employer in the district are hospitals. More ACA cuts leads to closing in particular rural hospitals. Now the fact I don't live in this district, am a political novice, and can articulate the issues people in districts likely across the country are concerned with I hope sends the message that it's not all anti trump and that the people in the Beltway who still can't acknowledge that the GOP a lesser degree has done this to themselves and this country are more the ones who are trump trump trump than the rest of the country. Frankly I find the arrogant Never Trumpers the worst. I follow Tom Nichols, Steve Schmidt but this inability to look internally is still not there so they point at the democrats and Trump, thinking he is some kind of anomaly versus a result of policies their and to a lesser degree democrats have pushed for years. And Joe Scarborough trying to call Trump a democrat doesn't absolve them either.
  2. He's delusional enough to react that way. I first thought he would not care. I now think he cares immensely. I hope he is kicked out like I hope Paul Ryan is kicked out of the catholic church.
  3. The thing that is particularly joyful about this is that Rubio himself actually helped with this campaign. He was rebuffed directly That's probably true. Until I read The Intercept article, I didn't real she was one of 2 Bush appointees who were directly responsible for the Hurricane Katrina debacle. The "best" people keep rising.
  4. Bingo. We need to stop believing these people care or can be shamed.
  5. i give credit to Pramilla Jayapal first and then Jeff Merkley who were the first 2 that visited detention centers. I don’t watch much cable any, ore, so much of its rinse and repeat, but I think the reporting that was broken I think on Chris Hayes show which was the first view into a child detention center, was very well done. I don’t know who the reporter is, but he’s very compelling. Being a new face or one I haven’t seen before probably helps. and by the way what’s going on at Fox? I got interrupted by a phone call just before Don Lemon on CNN was running into a segment about some of Fox networks producers being outraged by the Fox News coverage of the immigration crisis and threatening to boycott/walk.
  6. You can't help but see the irony here. The FBI is GOP central. Of course they had it in for Hillary no matter what Szorak texted. In fact it was him delaying the laptop that likely cost Hillary the election. I've never put Comey up on some pedestal in fact I am glad he's gone. Wray seems like a decent guy - well as decent as one can be as head of the FBI.
  7. This is monstrous. Our local Action Committee has gotten together to discuss. I live now in a very diverse community - Berwyn - and we have 19 diff immigrant groups in out community people are afraid. So we've got resources lined up if we need them - legal - political along with an a chain of action for people to take if we have an ICE raid or rules for people to follow if ICE comes to their homes. But we really want to do more in the cases of the children here. We had a rep from Rep Gutierrez's office come and meet with us and we have discussed partnering with Bethany on their Refugee and Immigrant Foster Care program. We don't even know how many of these kids are eligible, but I think we are hoping since Bethany is involved, we would have a way to actually track the name of the parent(s), where they are from It's feeling so helpless honestly that is the worst. Not being able to do anything to help. This is horrific what is happening to these people. Asylum seekers are not breaking any law and the undocumented folks are committing legally what amounts to a misdemeanor. What happens when there is no more room? Do people mysteriously start disappearing?
  8. He runs every election. This go around the GOP in Illinois didn't even bother to come up with a "std" candidate which they normally do. It's a very blue district.
  9. I've seen several articles written about how this may push the rise of new ISP's again, those committing to fair and affordable access to the internet. This, legalized marijuana, and college debt and secondarily the gutting of the social safety net even more are the things millennials seem to care most about.
  10. Oh Rodello wasn't the only one. 3 democratic incumbents in New Mexico lost their races to more progressive candidates. I would not exactly call New Mexico a bastion of socially progressive values but even the voters there are tired of business as usual. These folks certainly haven't helped the heavily latino population in the state. https://www.abqjournal.com/1181284/3-members-of-nm-house-trail-primary-opponents.html
  11. CNN and MSNBC have been doing this for the last several months. Same things they did in 2016. They cants help themselves. They want a horse race. I wish folks would stop this idea that anyone thinks elections are easy. im also pleased to see Deb Haaland win in New Mexico. I believe it was a forgone conclusion, but she will be the first Native American to serve in Congress. And Rodella deserved to lose. I’m not an advocate for term limits, but it was time for her to go IMO just like it is for so many politicians from both parties in Congress.
  12. I’ve been working on this in Illinois since they reintroduced iit after Nevada passed it last year. Part of it was certainly my own desire and the people I met and have collaborated with are phenomenal, but a lot of it was for my mom. . Going to Springfield and talking to legislators in the state has been a real learning experience. I also had the honor of hearing Pat Spearman senator from Nevada who led this effort their speak here in Illinois. Incredible woman. And phone banking talking to people all over he state, getting them to call their reps was eye opening. The same tired arguments about bathrooms, the military and abortion were tried and failed. Heck even at moms retirement community where a number of nuns live also, ipro life women( well interesting actually sort of) were in support of the ERA and hosted a discussion about it The legislator in the state House, a republican and House minority leader, who represents their area, came to this event after mom wrote a letter as did the sisters, and he was one of the few republicans who voted yes. I’d like to this this small group of elderly women tipped the scale. Capitalism has its faults no doubt and businesses rape and pillage consumers and employees left and right, but most are smart enough to know how important image and perception is. I think one of the biggest shocks for me was when Texas ended up refusing to pass a very restrictive bathroom bill several months back. Why? Because businesses that have moved to Texas got pressured by their young diverse employees and then put pressure on the state legislature. Educated millinnals for the most part they knew they could not afford to lose. Starbucks has stepped forward, now Disney, as has Dicks Sporting goods. Do they deserve a medal no. But I think they know their consumer bases and what they need to do to retain employees they value.
  13. Oh also Virginia has approved Medicaid expansion as part of their new budget and it's heading for Northam's desk for signing. https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/virginia-politics/virginia-senate-approves-medicaid-expansion-to-400000-low-income-residents/2018/05/30/5df5e304-640d-11e8-a768-ed043e33f1dc_story.html?utm_term=.d4da9d330c0a
  14. The state of Illinois, my state, has just tonight passed the ERA making it the 37th state. My elderly mom was very active in the movement back in the 70's and cursed the day Phyllis Schlafly got involved. Schlafly was from Illinois. This may not seem like a big deal,. but there are 4 states waiting to move forward who were waiting to be the last, Virginia being one of those states along with Florida. One more state is needed then the battle moves to congress to get the deadline extended. There is precedence for this. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/politics/ct-met-equal-rights-amendment-illinois-20180530-story.html
  15. And Guiliani getting booed at Yankee Stadium on his birthday. Not really in the same league as the other 2, but overall satisfying.
  16. I am shocked but yeah advertisers would have been pulling out left and right I saw that tweet from Chris Hayes apparently he's hosting a townhall tonight on racism and Valerie Jarrett is one of the attendees.
  17. It is. No one is that dispensable. Laurie Metcalf and John Goodman are as if not more talented. They can pull a Valerie Harper(who by the way was treated way worse that this hateful bigot). Kill Roseanne off as suggested and call it "Rosanne's family.
  18. I don't believe they will cancel it. I also don't buy her apology. Just reinforces why I will never again watch a thing she's on. I had no interest in this revival and this proves it was exactly the best decision.
  19. The Bush years were horrid but then so were the Reagan years. People who scream about how a muslim registry would be anti American forget we had one under Bush even though he played nice and went to that Mosque after 9/11. Trump is only worse because he can't pretend to try and be Beltway normal and he's incompetent as are so many of the people working with him. I also think Pence as disgusting as he is is mild compared to Cheney who is walking evil and actually smart. The ICE abuses have as we now see been going on for years. What Trump has done is ripped the band-aide off so it's now exposed to all. People who talk about going back to normal, what is that? When all of the things happening today were still happening but with more polished competent evil doers in place?
  20. The teacher was the hero and saved lives and he didn’t even have a gun. Imagine if he did. He threw a basketball at the shooter and then tackled him.
  21. Not really. AIDS was ignored during most of Reagan's presidency. Although you would hope 30 years later attitudes have changed. Sad that there are so many still so darn ignorant and bigoted. This IMO comes close to criminality.
  22. This is the mentality of the Trumpsters. Yes Trump I want an exemption now that it hurts me. How about genius business owner you figure out how to make those hinges in the US and not China. Didn’t Trump promise to bring back jobs from China? http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20180513/blog200/660491/how-my-presidents-tariffs-would-cripple-my-company On another but sort sort of related to the woman referenced in the above article, I am at the very end of the boomer generation and couple of friends and I have discussed boomers for the past several years and how the boomers are the reason we are where we .are This article is over a year old, written not long after Trump took office. I just got the book from the library and started reading it. I’ll post more after I have finished the book, but this article outlines the basic premise. https://www.bostonglobe.com/ideas/2017/02/26/how-baby-boomers-destroyed-everything/lVB9eG5mATw3wxo6XmDZFL/story.html?event=event25
  23. Is it terrible for me to say I don't trust Israel. Not saying they staged this but the timing of Iran shooting rockets at Israeli troops seems suspect. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/golan-heights-air-raid-sirens-today-live-updates-2018-05-09/
  24. Private prisons are big business. Slavery ain't gone it's just been moved into the prison industrial complex.
  25. I should have been clearer I was talking specifically about the Iran deal. At the end of the day of course you are correct. Lobbyists are allowed, foreign influence. I'm forever conflicted about the Saudi's. They are the worst human rights abusers in the middle east, were the main funders of the terrorists behind 9/11, yet somehow are still the US's greatest ally in the middle east outside of Israel. And Netanyahu who has been trying to peddle the idea that Iran is in violation of the agreement was also the one behind the lie about the WMD's in Iraq. We choose to listen versus verify because it just confirms what those in influential roles want to happen anyway.
