My point was that in the Genoa City of 1973 there were no international conglomerates. The wealthiest people depicted were the Brooks and then the Chancellors. Later on Lance Prentiss took it up a notch with a private jet etc ... Agree that the soaps should have taken the time to explain why these big outfits were based in these towns and used that as a plot point.

Lemay may have written the Matthews family differently in his tenure but they were not decimated by any means. Yes Mary was killed off, Alice recast and Russ written out but there was nothing that couldn't have been corrected. Russ was brought back later as was Susan but post Lemay Mike, Marianne, Russ. Pat, Alice were all dropped. Subsequent regimes made half hearted attempts to revive the family. The late 70's/early 80's was the time the show needed to keep the Matthews in play, nowt write them off. But the same thing was happening to the Hughes, Hortons and Bauers.

Well when Bill Bell for eg created Y&R there were no international conglomerates. The wealthy people (the Brooks) were newspaper editor and Chancellor was just a factory - the sort of business you would find in a town that size. The same with the Tylers, Lords and the other wealthy soap families. It wasn't until the Dallas influence trickled to daytime that businesses became mega industries - another chip in the wall that eventually crumbled and took away the essence of soaps.

The Doctors Discussion Thread
At the time the Sara story got praise for the writing/acting although long term killing off another Of Mike's wives wasn't a wise move. And with Mike in a wheelchair it was overkill. Currently the show is without an EP as Doris Quinlan has yet to take over. I wonder what the circumstances were at the time that led to Chuck Weiss leaving and no immediate replacement? I don't believe Weiss ever worked in soaps again. Interestingly when Quinlan arrives, there are cast/story changes yet she retains Elizabeth Levin/David Cherrill as writers. Usually a new EP changes writers quickly. Perhaps that points to Quinlan's experience in the genre and not going for the easy solution in blaming writers for poor ratings but instead working with them to make changes.

A natural story would have had Win return and Nola get involved with him to spite Mona. Kind of a Katherine/Phillip/Jill situation with its own twists and turns. It might have been fun also for Mona and Barney to get involved...

One Life to Live Tribute Thread
Cathy Craig was a role that kept being recast. Whether it was due to actors leaving or TPTB not happy with some of then J don't know. Maybe someone has more info? Looking at that clip makes me wish there had been more effort to keep the families going. Killing off Meredith and then Victor, not committing to Tony Lord, giving Larry only one child, dropping Cathy. Maybe Vinnie and Wanda could have adopted etc

As The World Turns Full Episode List
I would assume that ATWT was not shown on some affiliates and viewers either missed it or were able to watch it on another affiliate if they lived in a particular area that could pick up both stations. I don't believe that stations had a late night showing of a pre-empted episode until years later. Some more dates 1995 July 27 Claire Bloom's last day as Orlena July 31 Lynn Milgrim debuts as Orlena 1996 Dec 4 Barbara Garrick's first appearance as Rita Dec 24 Cassandra Creech debuts as Denise 1998 Sept 14 Jordana Brewster's last ep as Nikki.

Variety August 1947 Martha Alexander, headwriter for Second Mrs Burton has seen ratings rise in her two months on the job. Show has jumped from 38th to 21st. She wanted to change both female and male leads but sponsors prevailed and Dwight Weist was retained. Alexander wanted Les Tremayne. Lead actress Claire Neilson will be dropped and new actress retained on a week to week basis. Actresses up for the job included Ginger Jones and Jone Allison. Meanwhile meeting has been set between writer and execs to discuss the whole direction of the show. * Patsy Campbell, who had been playing Louisa ascored the role of Terry Burton and played it for 8 years. From what I can gather, Martha Alexander was headwriter for about 6 months.
