Selleck was featured in a number of pilots over the years before hitting the jackpot with Magnum, so I guess there was a quality about him that got him cast - that charisma that Khan referred too. I guess those years gave him the opportunity to refine his acting and it all came together in Magnum. Maybe for the first time the role was tailored to suit Tom - remember that Magnum was not the macho Mannix type lead.

I remember Al Rabin(?) saying that they were aware that Bo/Hope were leaving months prior so began easing them off and bringing other couples to the forefront to make the transition smoother.

The recast of Rick from Michael Gregory to Chris Robinson occurred in 78 after Monty had taken over. Also Gina being recast with Donna Bacalla taking over from Anna Stuart was during Monty's time. and I think Alice Grant also? But these all occurred early on in the Marland /Monty era and were deemed necessary for the overall structure of the show.

There was also talk many years earlier of Edge of Night going to primetime. I think this was around the time that Peyton Place had it's initial success. CBS went with Our Private World instead.

Was that something that all CBS soaps adopted at some point for consistency, or was it a show by show thing? I remember Mal introduced the 'previously on Y&R' . How long did that last?

The Paul Reubens appearance was a waste of time. I thought the latest episode was weak - the worst by far. The show has basically become acontinuing story - take away the jokes/laughtrack and it could be a soap.
