  1. Brenda said in interviews she was not happy that Phillip had been aged and maybe that came through in her 'acting' choices.
  2. Fascinating reading. I'm surprised that Y&R still was using the outdated taping method that they had used for the 30 min show. By that stage several other shows had gone to an hour and surely they would have looked for best practice. Wes Kenney had been through the same thing when he returned to Days and overhauled the production to allow for shorter working days and better budgeting. The letters from Bill Bell to Betty Corday during his Days stint show that he was frustrated at times that production didn't realize his vision or intent with particular scenes so the same thing must have occurred on Y&R.
  3. I wonder what the circumstances were, did they cross paths at Jonas's? If it was a throwaway scene, it did get mentioned in synopses. But some mentions in those newspaper summaries could be random. The 1982 revamp seemed to coincide with Wes Kenney's arrival. He and Bell had worked together on Days . Did Bill Bell have final word on who would be exec producer? I know there were reports of clashes with John Conboy. Does anyone have specifics? So did Wes Kenney sit down with Bill and give his two cents worth? It seems so in light of the changes made. Interesting that Bell needed someone to whip the show into shape when he has always been presented as having total control of the writing.
  4. That seemed to be Bill Bell's strategy for the expansion...take characters who had been in tight knit stories and use them to anchor a bunch of newbies. Reading through synopses I am surprised how long some characters hung around wothout much story - Jonas,Steve, Peggym Eve, etc Some other tidbits Eve admitted to sleeping with Derek in the past (possibility that Charles was his child?) Peggy arrested after leaving Jack's apartment naked under a fur coat! (wonder what set was used as Jack's apt?) Eve befriending Peggy. Victor flirting with Peggy. Greg dating Peggy.
  5. I was never sure if Bond's Jill interacted with Kay but a March synopsis confirms they did. From what I've seen of Bond, she seemed quite suitable as Jill. No reason was given for her replacement. I wonder if sometimes actors are replaced because they simply can't meet the demands of the soap schedule... Did Katherine attend Liz and Stu's wedding? I don't think so and wonder if it was addressed on screen? eg My dear Elizabeth, I am so happy that you have found the happiness you so richly deserve- happiness that has eluded me...Thank you for thinking of me on this very special time in your life .But you must know this. If your daughter is in attendance then I cannot, in all conscience, be a part of this wedding. To be in the same room as Jill, the woman who has been responsible for so much of my heartache, would be untenable for me. Let my wedding gift to you and Stuart be a day free from turmoil... re Sean Garrison - he seemed very different in type from Halsey/Douglas. Not the attractive, still virile older man that Jill would be attracted to.
  6. Sean Garrison? Is that the John Abbott seen in the Bond Gideon clip posted online? I assumed he was atemp and that Brett Halsey was the original John. He was the actor mentioned when John was first announced.
  7. i was actually referring to 1980 when Jack first came on to the time he got involved with Patty. There was a time when Jill was between recasts and John #1 was dropped,Peggy was in the cult story. I think Jack was barely on at times. Following the changes in 1980 it was like a revamp of a revamp. Peggy, Steve, Derek &Co ,Julia, John , Brock, Jonas, Michael and Eve were dropped.Jill and Patty were recast
  8. Brolden, Will 81 - really enjoying your insights. Yes, characters were often written as dumb to service the plot even by masters like Bill Bell. However, as you pointed out there could still be drama and conflict in having characters act more logically. Looking back on the 1980- stories, most of them were ill conceived and wrapped up or revamped. Some questions I hope can be answered. I believe that Terry Lester had stretches of time where Jack had little to do and he was barely on, while Bill Bell figured out what to do with him.Is that correct? Did John McCook depart when the show went to an hour in February? Lance is mentioned later on so did McCook return for short stints? It is stated that Beau Kayzer along with BD and McCook left when the show expanded yet Brock stayed for many months after to play the Brock/Julia story. It seems Bill Bell decided to finally give Brock a chance as leading man. Did Beau have some kind of out in his contract or did Bill decide to dump Brock when he revamped the story? Interesting that Bell dropped his original plan of Victor being killed as he decided EB had staying power yet he wrote the dungeon story that made Victor pretty irredeemable, especially back then when characters didn't usually get away with that level of villiany. what do others think?
  9. Maude - Cousin Maude The Waltons - Spencer's Mountain Barnaby Jones - Barnaby Cobb Good Times - Florida, Great Day
  10. Looking over those synopses, I wondered if Bill Bell considered having Stuart Brooks know Carl Williams and using that as a hook for Stu hiring Steve. It would have been quite feasible for Stu to be acquainted with Carl through his work. Liz could have also known Mary through the church (I believe that Liz was a church goer) Although having two similar women as friends? And Steve could have been school friend of Snapper/Greg. So straight away, using any of those connections could have eased the Williams into the show. It's interesting that Bell chose to introduce a working class family in the new format. Other shows were going with wealthier families eg Days -the Chandlers, AMC-the Cortlandts, AW-the Holloways.OLTL - the Buchanans etc Also at that time Vanessa became interested in Stu, something that was quickly dropped.

  12. Some details for The Bennetts. Wayne Bennett was a lawyer, the Bennetts had a son, Bert was Wayne's friend who Wayne suspected was involved in the store theft of $2000 when Bert turned up with an anniversary ring for his wife Ellie.
  13. Some GL trivia In 1966, GL director Gary Delmar was killed Oct 9 in a race car accident at Bridgehampton NY. He was 42 years old. I guess the Tracy Delmar character of that time was named for him.
  14. Broadcasting Magazine Aug 75 Soaper puts Georgia In a lather. In 1939 it was Orson Welles's War of the Worlds that caused mass panic when a fictional radio story was interpreted as a real newscast. In 1975 it's As the World Turns, a CBS -TV daytime soap opera, that had some Centerville, Ga., residents in an uproar. When viewers heard the program warning of a tornado "moving northeast Seven miles from Centerville" they took it seriously and began flooding the weather service's Macon office with calls. In true soap opera style it took the fictional tornado three days to reach "Centerville" and it was only after it struck and destroyed the fictitions town that life in the real Centerville and the weather bureau returned to normal.

  16. Dr Jane Lewis - even the name was boring, earlier wasn't there Cynthia, the nurse at the free clinic who had the hots for Snapper? The Sally return should have been epic but with a new Snapper and Chris - no opportunity for flashbacks- it fell flat. Greg should have hooked up with Sally.Imagine the angst for Chris having Sally as a sister in law? And Snapper having to watch Greg father his son? and Mom Foster trying to keep the peace?
  17. Check the primetime ratings thread in the next few days!
  18. The Another World bible is a must read. There were some deviations as soon as the show aired. Granny Matthews was dropped as was Susan. The whole storyline of Susan and Liz falling for 'Dave Wilson' was dropped as the character of Susan was not working out. However years later it was reworked into Susan and Liz being involved with Fred Douglas. Pat Matthews was called Cynthia. Tom Baxter was Tom Young. Russ seemed on his way to being a delinquent, injuring a pedestrian.
  19. Another oft use phrase 'I have to wonder' eg 'I have to wonder if Leslie will have the strength to perform', 'I have to wonder whether Snapper will ever forgive his father' etc
  20. Or if CBS had held on to EON and programmed it at 4pm as ABC did. It would have had a much stronger lead in and probably better coverage, Top 10 daytime ratings among blacks Jan- Feb 88 1. Y&R 18.3 2. AMC 17.8 3. OLTL 16.2 4, ATWT 14.2 5. GH 14.2 6. GL 13.1 7. B&B 13.0 8. TPIR 12.8 9.LOV 10.6 10. SB 8.6
  21. That seems to be the case, but surely Snapper would have to comment to Chris that 'something really heavy is going down with my sister Jill right now'😉
  22. Yes it was natural for the Brooks sisters to be friendly to Jill in 73/74 when Chris and Snapper married. They were girls of good breeding and Jill looked up to them with a mixture of awe and envy. Once the marriage had taken place there was no further reason that the girls would interact with Jill as they moved in different circles. Unlike today when billionaire's stop off at Crimson Lights for a coffee. Surely though, Chris had some reactions to Jill's traumas with Kay as as she was her sister in law?
