  1. I've mentioned before that perhaps it would have been better to write Leslie and Brad off (Tom Hallick was going to leave anyway)when Janice departed and allow some breathing time before a recast. Lorie had her plate full with Vanessa, Lance and later Lucas. Leslie could then return (widowed or divorced) and be an added factor in Prentiss saga. That longer break might have worked in favor of a Leslie recast. Your take on Vanessa is interesting and I admit at times I just wished everyone would just tell her they'd had enough and stop her in her tracks. I agree she somewhat lacked that nuance in her portrayal that we could feel for her situation a la Kay. I feel the same way about Phyllis with Michelle Stafford-I've never felt any sympathy or 'love to hate'for that character.

  3. AW tidbits Back in March 71 an ad in Variety for a 15 week acting class conducted by Constance Ford at Carnegie Hall beginning March 1. The 3pm timeslot competition was fierce Nov 78 GL#1 8.3/30 GH #7 7.1/25 AW# 8 6.6/22 How the mighty have fallen- in October 79 AW was beaten in the ratings by The Doctors and fell out of the Top 10 with a rating below 6.5.
  4. I think the earlier adult Toms- Peter Link,Peter Galman and C David Colson were all well received. Only Tom Tammi was a bust.
  5. Of course, I forgot EON. Of the newer shows Santa Barbara and Passions didn't use cast pics.
  6. Did Traci ever finish her book about Dina's days in Paris?
  7. I would have loved Leanna to have turned up on the arm of a guest-maybe Matt Miller? Crampton looks amazing for her age-not at all 'done' The tinkly background music is a minus-they really need to get back to music that enhances the scene. Mamie not knowing Lily's twins was odd-I would have preferred it being said that she had visited them over the years - same with the Abbotts-it seems out of character that she had no contact. The dumb masks seem to be there to facilitate the Phyllis plot-they are awkward and unnecessary. Phyliis' lips....
  8. P AMC had a picture of Rosemary Prinz in the photo album for her 6 month stint 'with guest star' billing. There's an ep of Road of Life from the mid 50's where the actors posed in picture frames for the intro (live!). Maybe Never Too Young showed the actors in the opening with kids romping around (or were they just random teens?) So unless I've missed something Y&R with the character sketches was the first long running show to use images. Ryan's Hope followed their lead and then The Doctors and Love of Life when they revamped openings in the late 70's. Then Texas, Guiding Light and One Life to Live.
  9. Re the GCAC Am I right in saying that at some point that set got a bit smaller and what we are seeing currently is the original full scale version? I think it will go back into mothballs once the gala is over.
  10. I find that giant photo of Neil a little disconcerting. And that brass instrument collage looks tacky. Otherwise,it's an OK set , but will we see those tables full? To the left there is a staircase entrance which indicates it is a basement venue but to the right are draped windows?

  13. In between the Chance's long absence and COVID break that marriage hardly existed. Now Abby has two divorces behind her with little consequence. There was at least another year they could have got out of Chance/Abby .It's damaging to the characters and show to have these quickie marriages. With more sets and characters at their disposal (and a better writer) the show would be much more watchable. If Mamie, Nina etc would pop in when needed so much the better.
  14. It might also be to do with budget. If the guest stars and recurring actors don't appear they are not paid. With contract actors they are probably trying to keep them to their guarantees as much as possible. So if they can avoid having them onscreen that can help. As the gala continues some characters who are supposed to be there may not be seen in an episode. They have spent extra $$$ for this, so I guess anywhere they can make savings... Wonder if there will be any bump in the ratings? Hopefully , otherwise they'll be able to justify the threadbare production values -'See, we spent extra and it made no difference'
  15. ALL of the current cast should be at the gala and that includes lesbian moms and Chance in a tux on his grandmother's arm. It was great to see the cast dressed up -with the women for the most part looking elegant- on a large set with plenty of extras. Wish Sony would keep the purse strings opened.
  16. Daily News New York, New York 25 Jan 1978, SOAP OPERA NOTES by JON-MICHAEL REED ABC WENT ALL THE WAY to the tune ol $8,760,800 to supply "One Life to Live" with new studio facilities to accommodate the serial's recent expansion to an hour-a-day air format. "OLTL's" ultramodern, three-story new headquarters are located in the former armory building on Manhattan's upper West Side just off Central Park. Bob Cioppa of the architectural firm of Kohn, Peddersen, Fox supervised the renovation of the early 1900 building, which had fallen into extreme disrepair prior to its auction purchase by ABC in 1976. The transformation began in February 1977 and was completed only four weeks ago. The medieval castle exterior was steam cleaned and preserved but the interior was gutted and altered. The entire structure was sound proofed and to eliminate noise within the building, an insulated subceiling was constructed beneath the original wooden roof. The main floor contains a high-ceilinged filming studio as well as technical lighting and sound control areas which are built on a split level two feet above the studio floor. The basement rehearsal, storage, makeup and dressing rooms are a modern pastiche of mirrors, chrome fixtures and brightly colored cube furniture. The show's cast double up with "roomies"' in 20 oversized dressing looms that include ample closet space, a sitting area and a couch for between-scenes catnapping. The production staff offices are on the second floor and the show's writers have their own permanent quarters which is highly uncommon in the serial world. ' One Life's" new abode bodes well for the show s potential visual splendors. Says producer Joe Stuart. "In our former studio the sets had to be scaled down to nearly a third of their present size for lack of space. Here we were able to expand and rejuvenate the old sets and construct new ones. We can use seven to 10 different sets per day now as opposed to the three to six that were used in the other-length versions of the show. Also, working with five cameras instead of the previous two or three we used in the past will lend a visual feeling of more scope and grandeur.'
  17. Has Jill had scenes with him? Nina is back so obviously he will appear then There is still drama to be mined from the Abby/Chance breakup. Instead like so much other stuff, it's swept under the rug and forgotten. Maybe Chance decides he wants to try again with Abby? That would create some conflict/drama. Is there anyone else on the canvas that Chance could hook up with? They seem to be hinting at Sharon for a minute. I would hate to see Chance dropped.
  18. Yes, it is what it is ...but... The noir look skyscrapers don't say Y&R to me. How about a some earlier(flattering) clips of each castmember in B&W fading from one to the next as the color pose is superimposed over the top? eg Victor in his original cowboy look and then a couple of other clips throughout the years. A young Nikki on stage, a shot from the first wedding etc Highlighting the history and legacy of those characters. For newer cast members eg Brytni/Sean just find some clips where they look a bit different eg different hairstyles/haircuts In my mind it looks great !!
  19. Re the Paul reference. They had to explain why he was not there and that made some sense. Having him retire means that there is no need to mention him in police/crime stories. Christine can keep popping up with no real need to mention Paul. so for now the bases are covered. If fences are mended Paul can easily reappear. Speaking of police will Chance suddenly decide a la Nate to give up police work and enter the business world? Josh wants all his character involved in family or business stories.

  22. Lake Charles American-Press Lake Charles, Louisiana 07 Oct 1960 Drama Serial Entering 5th Season on TV The Edge of Night, KFDM-TV Channel 6's absorbing Monday- through-Friday dramatic serial (3:30-4:00 p.m.) is entering its fifth year of exciting drama entertainment for the daytime viewer. Combining suspenseful adventure with sensitive personal drama. The Edge of Night encompasses the full sweep of emotions as they work in the lives of Mike and Sara Karr, played by John Larkin and Teal Ames. Mike is a crusading young lawyer, employed by Grimsley Enterprises as corporation counsel. His outside interests center around the Citizen's Crime Commission, a group of citizens interested in good government. These interests involve Mike in a variety of assignments which expose him to the more unscrupulous elements of the town of Monticello and their hatred because of his crusade to make the city a decent place in which to live. Sara realizes that Mike is right in what he is doing and that his dedication is to be admired, nevertheless, she cannot lose the fear and anxiety that comes from not knowing whether or not he will end up the victim of some hoodlum's attack. Mike's awareness of the suffering which Sara is undergoing and his devotion to duty provides a: underlying conflict to the story, a conflict further intensified by the presence of Laurie Ann Karr, their year-and-a half old baby daughter whose welfare is uppermost in both parents' hearts. In coming months the story will focus on Mike's work to uncover a numbers racket, operated, not by common hoodlums, but by members of Monticello's social set; Theresa Vetter, a lovely but heartless woman, Victor Carlsen, handsome, rich, and charming, who dreams of becoming a crime "tycoon" in control of all racketeering in the city, Jenning Carlsen, Victor's younger brother, neurotic, almost psychotic, and completely under Victor's control. Subordinate to the major theme is the story of Judy Marceau, daughter of Acting Chief of Police Bill Marceau and Mike Karr's good friend. Judy is a case-worker for the Juvenile Authority and her modern ideas about young criminals put her in constant conflict with her father, with the Police Department, and notably, with young Police Lieutenant Ed Gibson. The Edge of Night is produced by Charles Fisher and directed by Richard Sandwick and Allen Bristoe. Writers are Irving Vendig and Carl Bixby.

  24. Seeing the GCAC set after several years, completely intact down to the furniture makes me wonder how long old sets are kept and where they are stored. At what point is it decided to destroy sets that are no longer in use? Is the Newman Ranch set still in storage? Nick's house? Lauren's apartment? etc I'm pretty sure that the original Chancellor set was destroyed because it was too old (and maybe even unsafe?) Quite possibly there are regulations about these things and the materials used back in the day are no longer considered acceptable. I wonder when it was decided that the original Foster and Brooks homes would no longer be used?
