Seems a club is a bit limiting in that it's an evening venue and would attract a certain clientele so not that useful as a meeting place for characters. Underground had the same issues- Victor wasn't going to bump into Jack there. Faith could have been written off once Alyvia departed. Trauma of all she went through, wanted a fresh start at a boarding school. Instead they aged her with Reylynn and gave her scraps before dropping her.

NBC aired a primetime Return to Peyton Place Sun night Jan 20 1973. That helped the daytime ratings. In the week prior to the primetime special RTPP had a 7.2 rating for the week. After the primetime ep the show had an 8.0 rating the following week.

I agree that Victoria, Phyllis , Billy etc could all do with a rest and I have no idea why Chelsea was brought back. Mal tried with Fen, Ana the Rosales to bring in fresh blood but Josh wouldn't have it. They had a chance to reset Adam but within weeks it was back to the same old. I think CBS/Sony just want to hang on to the viewers they've got and believe that serving up familiar content is the way to do it. Look at CBS primetime and the old school dramas that make up the bulk of the schedule NCIS, CSI, FBI,Blue Bloods, SWAT all safe and predictable.

That is true of most of the cast now. Case, Scott, Braeden, Heinle, Stafford etc are there until the axe falls. So from that point of view I sympathise with Griffith as he is forced to tell stories for characters who in many cases are played out, not only because of their tenure, but also because of poor storylines. Having said that I still blame Griffith for coming up with inane business stories and retelling the same plots for those characters. eg Adam against the Newmans, Nick turning against Victor etc

Suddenly everyone switched their allegiance to Society and GCAC was never seen again. I guess the set took up too much space as now, to save money, most sets are up permanently. It was recently stated that Devon had sold it.

Tucker's origin story is already nonsensical. Katherine forgets she had a child. He happens to come to GC and happens to be Devon's father. They undid the horrendous Jill as Katherine's daughter only to rewrite for that garbage.

Yes they wrote for love of Life in the mid 60's. There is a documentary about them 'The Bachelors of Broken Hill' The true life soap opera of Frank Provo and John Pickard. Actors, writers and gentlemen farmers, their greatest success would not be found on the boards of Broadway or the hills of Hollywood but in a closeted relationship 40 years. This is their love story.

In May 73 Lee Phillip Bell hosted a special 'The Rape of Paulette' on WBBM Chicago. It was a 'tough and incisive' video essay on the subject. Lee Phillip did a lot of the research. This must have informed Bill Bell in presenting the storylines of the rapes of Chris and Peggy Brooks.

Just discovered that Sada Thompson signed on to play the wife of Vincent Gardenia as the neighbors on All in the Family for the 1973/74 season. She quit after one day of shooting, sighting homesickness for NY and her family. Betty Garrett took over the role.

'The Chadwick Family' was an ABC TV movie pilot for a proposed series starring Fred MacMurray that definitely had soapy overtones. Way back in Sept 73 variety reports that ABC is developing 'American Family' through Spelling Goldberg with Jay Presson Allen writing the scripts. It finally went to air March 76. I believe that is highly unusual for a show to be in development for so long. Guess there must have been someone who really believed in the concept.

Found this in the old thread In August 78, ABC officially announced it was developing a new soap 'The Best Years' from Ann Marcus.It involved the love triangles of parents,students and teachers of a Southern California beachtown high school community. Headwriters will be Joyce Perry and Ray Goldstone,all then working on Days. Where would ABC have placed this? All of it's soaps were doing well at this stage. Was it 30 min or 60? Maybe 4pm to replace Edge? Or late morning/midday?

This reminds me of earlier when Millee Taggart arrived as Janet. In the 5 or so years she'd been absent she now had 2 children in their early teens. Previously Janet had been roughly the same age as Patti but now was older. Patti was still a young married trying to conceive her first child. Was the Patti/Janet connection played down to cover that? I don't know why they created Sarah Whiting instead of just making her Tracey. Did Patti refer to her children when she returned .How was their absence explained?
