  1. I think Days remains 2nd for the better part of the next two years. As we all know, the closest Days got to beating Y&R was June 23-27, 1997 and all of Reilly big storylines culminated in Summer 1997.
  2. @Soapsuds It Must Have Been Love was the best song on the Pretty Woman soundtrack. Were you a fan of that movie?
  3. It bears repeating, Bradley did not inherit his father's talent.
  4. The cynic in me can't help but feel that GL being CBS highest-rated daytime drama in the Potter/Marland era was helped by Y&R being in their post-expansion slump. Remember pre-expansion Y&R was challenging General Hospital and All My Children for #1 but the expansion derailed all its momentum. Y&R rebounds in the second half of 1982 and that overlaps w/ GL post-Marland fall. It disappoints me that there was a ratings drop during the Calhoun era and the ratings did not reflect the quality of the show (at least to me).
  5. How fitting that 1995 goes on a break right when Reilly Days has blown up 😆 Had Peter Reckell returned at this point?
  6. GL did not finish at #1. It was proven in the 1980s ratings thread. GL won the time slot over General Hospital May 28-June 1, 4-8, 11-15, 1984. Y&R was #1 those three weeks.
  7. Summer 1995 Y&R Nick/Sharon were eating the show and B&B was tanking as Bradley's big storylines had culminated. Reilly Days is about to blow up.
  8. Y&R big event: Dru gives birth to Lily. That was the culmination of all of Bradley's storylines. B&B tanks for me in the second half of 1995.
  9. I loved that episode, mainly because I never liked Friends anyway. I like your ideas for a Murder, She Wrote final season farewell. Sadly Les Moonves didn't allow that to happen. What we got was Everybody Loves Raymond, CSI, NCIS, The Big Bang Theory. All shows with a masculine energy, but that's neither here nor there for this thread.
  10. Full House moved to Tuesday in 1991/92 and became a Top 10 show that season and the following season. Family Matters had two Top 30 seasons in 1991/92 (27th) and 1993/94 (30th). I had forgotten that Miller-Boyett was part of Lorimar/Warner Brothers. It's so funny that Patrick Duffy went from Dallas to TGIF sitcom Step by Step.
  11. 1989/90 ABC launched their TGIF Friday comedy block and it was a 1990s staple. Dallas was not a Top 30 show in its final two seasons but two TGIF comedies were in the Top 30 those seasons: Full House 22nd in 1989/90 and 14th in 1990/91, Family Matters 15th in 1990/91. The Dukes of Hazzard never recovered from the 1982/83 cast switch and it was not a Top 30 show in its final two seasons yet CBS left it at Friday 8 pm. After The Dukes of Hazzard ended, Friday 8 pm was a CBS dead zone for the remainder of Dallas run. The longest-running post-The Dukes of Hazzard lead in was Beauty and the Beast for two seasons.
  12. 100% this. Angela Lansbury and Murder, She Wrote deserved to have a proper farewell and not the sabotage that Les Moonves inflicted. He will forever be on my s--- list for that. Angela was sweet and unassuming yet savage at the same time. Her most savage moments IMO: The shade towards the new hotness Miami Vice and proceeding to clean sweep them. Angela was more elegant and classy than savage with her shade though (referring to Miami Vice as Miami Heat). Beating the diva of all divas of 1980s primetime soaps Joan Collins to become the highest-rated drama across the broadcast networks. I was impressed that Joan Collins posted a memoriam to Angela on her social media, that was very classy of her to do so. Becoming CBS's highest-rated scripted show and knocking big bad Larry Hagman off the throne at CBS. The episodes in the final season that shaded both Friends and CBS. Angela did not give a f--- about being elegant and classy with her shade. She was hurt and rightfully so and I don't blame her for reacting the way that she did.
  13. I don't think you're being childish at all. We can't hold 1980s primetime soaps to the same standards that we hold the daytime soaps. Those of us that were spoiled by watching the best of the daytime soaps are going to find flaws in the 1980s primetime soaps from a writing and acting standpoint. The 1980s primetime soaps are very much products of their time and I think its a genre that you've had to have watched in real time in order to appreciate. When you watch them in 2024, you have to have the mindset that they are products of their time and alot of things are not going to hold up well through a 2024 lens.
  14. @Khan The Angela Lansbury and Urkel GIFs are killing me 🤣
  15. November 20, 1987: Miami Vice January 6, 1989: Mr. Belvedere January 13, 1989: Mr. Belvedere March 17, 1989: Mr. Belvedere 1989/90 Friday 9 pm Dallas was usually 2nd to Perfect Strangers. They tied on November 3, 1989 and November 10, 1989 and Dallas won the time slot on November 17, 1989 and December 15, 1989. March 16, 1990 Dallas was 3rd at Friday 9 pm to a repeat of Perfect Strangers and a new episode of Nasty Boys. After the NCAA Basketball break, CBS moved Dallas to Friday 10 pm. March 30-April 13, April 27-May 11, November 2-December 21, 1990 Friday 10 pm Dallas was usually 2nd to 20/20. Dallas won the time slot on November 2, 1990. January 4, 1991 Dallas returned to Friday 9 pm and it remained there until the series finale May 3. It was usually 2nd to Perfect Strangers except for January 4, 1991: 3rd to Perfect Strangers and Night Court January 18, 1991: 3rd to Perfect Strangers and a repeat of Cheers March 8, 1991: 2nd to Family Matters April 26, 1991: 2nd to Family Matters May 3, 1991 (series finale): wins time slot and 2nd for the week. Wow, Dallas near the end got beat twice by Family Matters. I can only imagine how Larry Hagman reacted to that. When Urkel beats you, yeah it's time to go.
  16. As I've pointed before, the decline of Dallas over its final six seasons lines up with the decline of CBS's primetime lineup. CBS primetime lost #1 to NBC in Spring 1986 then dropped to 3rd in Spring 1988 and remained in 3rd until Spring 1991. Angela Lansbury may have been sweet and unassuming, but to me she will forever be savage for knocking big bad Larry Hagman off the throne at CBS. Larry Hagman may have been the reason CBS primetime rode high in the first half of the 1980s, but it was Angela Lansbury that ended up carrying CBS primetime on her back through some pretty awful years from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s.
  17. Heading into Fall 1985, Dallas had lost #1 to Dynasty. The weaknesses started showing during the March 1985 ratings drop. Little did we know that the new season would bring us a sophomore slaughtering and a sophomore surprise. Just as I did for 1984/85, I divided 1985/86 into pre-Super Bowl and post-Super Bowl. September 27, 1985: The Family Ewing (Part 1 of season 9 premiere)/Rock Bottom (Part 2 of season 9 premiere), rating 23.9, 7th for the week. The Cosby Show (December 12: Denise’s Friend, rating 35.4) was #1 and Murder, She Wrote (December 15: Sticks & Stones, rating 26.5) was 3rd. December 20, 1985: Curiosity Killed the Cat, rating 21.1, 5th for the week. Finished ahead of Dynasty (December 18: The Roadhouse, rating 20.0, 12th). The Cosby Show was a repeat on December 19. No Murder, She Wrote on December 22. December 27, 1985: Pre-empted for Kennedy Center Honors. January 3, 1986: The Missing Link, rating 21.9, 13th for the week. The Cosby Show (January 2: Mrs. Westlake, rating 34.9) was #1 and Murder, She Wrote (January 5: Murder by Appointment Only, rating 26.1) was 4th. No Dynasty on January 1. Murder, She Wrote was a repeat on January 26. On a win/loss basis, Dallas pre-Super Bowl was 0-14 vs. new episodes of The Cosby Show, 2-11 vs. new episodes of Murder, She Wrote; and 9-5 vs. Dynasty. Dallas isn't even the highest-rated scripted show on CBS anymore. Dallas is now reduced to jockeying for position in the Top 10. January 31, 1986: Shadow Games, rating 20.9, 13th for the week. At the end of the season, The Cosby Show was #1; Murder, She Wrote was 3rd (the highest-rated drama and CBS's highest-rated scripted show), Dallas was 6th, and Dynasty was 7th. I am pretty sure it was the March 1986 ratings drop that lead to Patrick Duffy return and it was all a dream.
  18. Y&R big event: Hope gives birth to Adam. B&B big event: Stephanie and then Ridge learn Taylor is alive.
  19. @yrfan1983 MTS had a contract dispute in 2001 where she apparently cleaned out her dressing room and Nikki was sent to Brazil on a research trip for Jabot. JM 2007 contract dispute had Nick presumed dead in a plane crash and it was rumored that Y&R had Galen Gering in line as a possible Nick recast. EB 2009 contract dispute had Victor sent to a medical clinic after his heart transplant and he made a goodbye video for Faith.
  20. @Khan CBS soaps in general got very little love in the first 15 years of the Daytime Emmys. Search for Tomorrow had CBS first three acting wins. 1976: Larry Haines (Lead Actor) 1977: Val Dufour (Lead Actor) 1981: Larry Haines (Supporting Actor) 1984-1988 three more CBS soaps got wins 1984: Larry Bryggman (Lead Actor and As the World Turns first win in this category), Justin Deas (Supporting Actor and As the World Turns first win in this category), Judi Evans (Supporting Actress and GL first overall nomination and win). 1985: Kim Zimmer (Lead Actress and GL first nomination and win in this category), Larry Gates (Supporting Actor and GL first nomination and win in this category), Beth Maitland (Supporting Actress and Y&R first nomination and win in this category), Brian Bloom (Younger Actor and first winner in this category), Tracey Bregman (Younger Actress and first winner in this category) 1986: John Wesley Shipp (Supporting Actor) 1987: Larry Bryggman (Lead Actor), Kim Zimmer (Lead Actress), Gregg Marx (Supporting Actor), Martha Byrne (Younger Actress and As the World Turns first win in this category) 1988: Julianne Moore (Younger Actress) Search for Tomorrow had CBS first acting nomination. 1974: Mary Stuart (Lead Actress) 1981 three more CBS soaps start getting nominations. This list below is limited to first nominations in each category for each show. 1981: Larry Bryggman (Lead Actor), Henderson Forsythe (Lead Actor), Justin Deas (Supporting Actor) - As the World Turns first nominees 1984: Terry Lester (Lead Actor and Y&R first overall nominee) 1986: Elizabeth Hubbard (Lead Actress and As the World Turns first nominee in this category), Kathleen Widdoes (Supporting Actress and As the World Turns first nominee in this category), Vincent Irizarry (Younger Actor and GL first nominee in this category), Martha Byrne (Younger Actress and As the World Turns first nominee in this category) 1987: Krista Tesreau (Younger Actress and GL first nomination in this category) 1989: Jeanne Cooper (Lead Actress and Y&R first nomination in this category), Quinn Redeker (Supporting Actor and Y&R first nomination in this category)
  21. So is Justin Timberlake cancelled? I was never a fan of that culture vulture.
  22. Michelle Forbes was nominated for Supporting Actress in 1990. The rest of the race was Julia Barr (winner), Mary Jo Catlett, Lynn Herring, Jess Walton. That illustrates the inherent problem with the Younger categories, in that kids/teens are competing against grown adults. Bryan Buffington was nominated for Younger Actor in 1990, 1991, 1993-1995, so he was 10, 11, 13-15. The winners in those years were Andrew Kavovit (19 in 1990), Rick Hearst (26 in 1991), Monti Sharp (26 in 1993), Roger Howarth (26 in 1994), Jonathan Jackson (13 in 1995). Maureen Garrett wasn't nominated in 1993 when Ellen Parker won. 1991 Maureen lost to Jess Walton and the rest of the race was Darlene Conley, Jill Larson, Kathleen Widdoes. 1992 Maureen lost to Maeve Kinkead and the rest of the race was Darlene Conley, Linda Dano, Lynn Herring. 1993 Ellen won over Kimberlin Brown, Jane Elliot, Jill Larson, Tonja Walker. 1994 Maureen lost to Susan Haskell and the rest of the race was Signy Coleman, Hilary Edson, Sharon Wyatt. In that 1984-1992 period, Erika Slezak and Kim Zimmer were dominating the Lead Actress races. I broke down Elizabeth Hubbard's losses in the As the World Turns thread.
  23. No cities lost CBS AFAIK. Some 1994 articles about the affiliate switches. CBS loses trio of affils to Fox (variety.com) FOX WILL SIGN UP 12 NEW STATIONS; TAKES 8 FROM CBS - The New York Times (nytimes.com) CBS Sees A 'War' for Affiliates - The New York Times (nytimes.com) CBS, Group W reach affiliate pact - UPI Archives CBS, NBC to Swap TV Stations, Other Assets in Four Cities - Los Angeles Times (latimes.com)
  24. Looking at the CBS numbers, I think we are seeing the impact of the affiliate losses. I'm not referring to clearances. When CBS lost NFL broadcasting rights in 1994, they also lost several established affiliates in major media markets. B&B big event: Brooke learns Taylor is alive.
