Robert Calhoun run was June 1989 to July 1991. Recall that SOD named GL Most Improved Show of 1989 and to me it was thanks to Robert Calhoun. It still disappoints me that the ratings during Robert Calhoun's run did not reflect the quality of the show. I'd go as far as to say that Robert Calhoun was GL's last good EP and he was the only good EP they had in the final 25 years.

To think if Marcia Cross had a longer run on Knots Landing, we might not have gotten Dr. Kimberly Shaw of Melrose Place.

DAYS: R.I.P. Drake Hogestyn (John Black, Days of our Lives)
Days has had so much loss in the last 30 years. An entire generation with the heads of all the main families (Macdonald Carey, Frances Reid, Joseph Mascolo, Frank Parker, Peggy McCay, John Aniston) and now losses in the subsequent generations (John Clarke, Bill Hayes, Drake Hogestyn). I'd like to think that to Days fans there's some comfort in knowing they are all upstairs together and are sharing memories of their time working with each other.

Knots Landing
Of the CBS primetime soaps, I'm pretty sure Knots Landing had the most former daytime actors in the main cast or in short arcs. I pointed out before that CBS had so much of their own daytime talent that could have been used on their primetime soaps but for whatever reason the CBS primetime soaps used ABC/NBC daytime actors instead. I have a feeling demographics played a part in that, since CBS on the whole skewed older compared to ABC/NBC.

Knots Landing
The William Devane Exclusive Interview Sep 2024 (knotslanding.net) From this interview, I get the impression that William Devane was on his way out and would not have returned had there been a season 15. At the start of the final season, the longest-tenured main cast members were Michele Lee, Ted Shackelford, Kevin Dobson, and William Devane and during the final season all but Michele Lee had their episodes cut. Michele Lee took a pay cut to appear in all episodes of the final season. If Knots Landing had season 15 in Fall 1993 it would have looked old school next to peak 90210, Melrose about to take off, and new drama NYPD Blue.

This was the first of week of 1984/85 season that all four soaps and the two rookie hits had new episodes broadcast. The previous weeks of 1984/85: September 17-23, 1984: The Cosby Show series premiere. Dynasty was a repeat. No Knots Landing, Dallas, Falcon Crest. September 24-30, 1984 (in date order): Dynasty season 5 premiere. The Cosby Show episode 2. Dallas season 8 premiere. Falcon Crest season 4 premiere. Murder, She Wrote series premiere. Here's what happened on the soaps and two rookie hits the week of October 22-28, 1984: Dynasty - The Rescue: Jeff and Blake learn the woman who died in the plane crash with Peter DeVilbis cannot be positively identified, but the ring she was wearing is indeed Fallon's wedding band. Back in Denver, Fallon's funeral is held. Dallas - Family: Jamie offers J.R. proof that she is really a Ewing. Cliff considers a lucrative offer from Wendell. Pam and Jackie see Mark Graison's car. The Cosby Show - Breaking with Tradition (episode 6): Cliff's father attempts to convince a reluctant Denise to attend his alma mater. Knots Landing - Hanging Fire: Greg tells the police that he shot St Claire because he had a gun and was about to shoot Abby. Abby concurs and Greg asks her to make a public statement on his behalf. Falcon Crest - Shadows: Richard's attacker is revealed. Lance faces opposition at the newspaper. Joel mugs Maggie at the track. Emma has a surprise visitor. Murder, She Wrote - Hooray for Homicide (episode 4): Jessica travels to Hollywood in an effort to stop a sleazy producer from turning one of her novels into a steamy film. When the movie mogul turns up dead, she is horrified to learn that she is the chief suspect.

I haven't seen any of Chris Brooks or Peggy rape storyline but from what I remember of Cricket date rape storyline, Bill Bell covered the physical/emotional effects and the medical/legal aspects. Also Cricket date rape was a summer social issue storyline, so that played a big part in the story being told responsibly. I agree that Christine and Michael should not have been in each other's orbit romantically after the sexual harassment and attempted rape a decade earlier. That was Jack Smith doing. I doubt Bill Bell would ever have gone that route.

Y&R: Old Articles
We all know second half of 1986 to end of 1989 Cricket ate the show. I will give LLB credit for improving as an actress during the date rape storyline. If you recall during the Entertainment Tonight Y&R 50th anniversary special, LLB commented that Bill Bell wanted to tell the date rape story "properly". I got the impression LLB was taking a swipe at how other soaps told rape storylines irresponsibly in the 1980s. I wonder what TL issues were w/ Jack storylines near the end. Perhaps he sensed Bill Bell was losing interest in the Abbotts or maybe TL had issues w/ Ed Scott. Remember that Cricket eating the show overlaps w/ Ed Scott becoming EP. Also 1987-1989 it seemed Bill Bell was losing interest in the Abbotts w/ Traci role being reduced and then the Ashley and Jack recasts which threw off the balance in the family. Terry Lester will forever be Jack to me. His Jack was such a layered character and all those layers got lost w/ the recast. I always point out that 1989 was wonky w/ the females. Cricket ate the show, Cassandra was the show's new pet, and the rest of the main females (Jill, Katherine, Nikki, Ashley, Traci, Lauren, Nina, Leanna) were given second and third tier storylines. Cassandra becoming the show's new pet overlaps w/ MTS pregnancy leave, ED departure w/o a proper exit storyline, Bill Bell rushing into recasting Ashley, BE Ashley floundering until the Brad/Traci/Ashley triangle, and Nikki floundering from MTS return until the storyline w/ PB Jack.
