Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
As junky as Aaron Spelling's shows often were, at the same time, you can't deny that he had his fingers on the pulse of what viewers wanted to see - for awhile, anyway.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
In retrospect, I think we just reached a point where we grew tired beautiful people getting themselves into trouble every week. We needed something with more substance. Come to think of it, that's probably why "L.A. Law" took off like it did (once NBC changed its' time slot). In a way, that show was a perfect marriage of early- and mid-'80's style and late-'80's substance. It was "Hill Street Blues" and "St. Elsewhere" for viewers who thought HSB and "Elsewhere" were too gritty or too depressing.

I agree. Kyle should have been the one to find Reva and bring her back to Springfield. But I guess they didn't want to raise the possibility of needing to bring back Larkin Malloy, lol? Although, as much as I enjoyed watching Malloy, it's not as if he was irreplaceable. In fact, I would've much rather seen Roscoe Born join GL as a Kyle recast and have him work with Kim Zimmer and Robert Newman than to see him in the nothing role he did have on the show.

Basically, Kyle left Springfield and (I think) returned to Tulsa after he almost killed Josh during an argument over Reva. Months later, Reva received word that Kyle had met and married a woman named Amy and that the two were expecting a child. However, Amy and their baby were later killed in a plane crash (in the Himalayas?); and Kyle was left comatose, which was the last we heard anything about him. As convoluted as the storyline became during the 1988 WGA strike, it also was gripping, due mostly to Michelle Forbes' performance as Sonni/Solita. Kyle's actions during the whole Ben/Maeve storyline was just deplorable and amounted (IMO) to character assassination, similar to how AMC would later destroy Travis and his relationship with Erica with the bizarre Steven Andrews story.

As I've said in the past, part of the joy of watching DS is simply watching the cast and crew get through each episode by the skin of their teeth. It wasn't live, but it was taped as if it was, and as a result, it is exhilarating.

Time might prove my silly ass wrong, but I have a lot more faith in Parker Short than I do in David Hogg.

Actually, @Vee, I think RDA was off GH by the time Robert Newman joined GL, but okay. If not for the fact that he, too, might be too young, I'd cast Dean Butler - a.k.a. Almanzo Wilder, a.k.a. Gidget's husband, a.k.a. Buffy Summers' Dad - as the new Jeff Webber; and I'd have him return with the sad (or not) news that Carolyn passed away. I'd still give Ric and Nina another try (even though I had NO idea they'd been married before when I suggested it a month or so ago, lol).

Again, look at an old episode of SFT or LOL from the early 1950's. Their sets are literally just darkly painted flats with doors and window frames suspended on piano wires. Yet, they look 1000% more convincing than anything Ellen Wheeler and her crew cooked up in Peapack. That's how you know you're working with people who know what the [!@#$%^&*] they're doing.

That might explain why AMC also went out of their way to make his character on that show (Travis Montgomery) look so awful after doing such a great job pairing him with Susan Lucci. Chances are, Lucci had had her fill of him, too, lol. And that's really a shame to me, because Larkin Malloy was a favorite of mine across three different soaps: first, EON; then, GL; and later, AMC. Speaking of Stephen Yates, does anyone know what the hell happened to him? He seems to have dropped off the face of the earth!

I adore Kim Coles - her guest appearances on "Frasier" are highlights - and I'm glad she has had good experiences working on DAYS. I just wish the writing for her was a lot funnier.

All those sets, and they still taped scenes in the middle of the woods for no damn reason!

Well, I'm not so much a Liz fan as I am a fan of the dynamics that have resulted from her raising three, young men single-handedly. I feel like single mother/head nurse Liz and her boys should be a major focus on this show, because it's REAL, and it's something that a lot of real women deal with everyday. Something to remember since TIIC have forgotten that these shows are produced primarily FOR women! Moreover, I feel like if Liz SHOULD be pursuing a new romance, it shouldn't be with any of her baby daddies but with someone who isn't related to any of her sons, as that's a situation that could yield interesting conflicts as well.

I agree. And that's exactly what she should tell Sonny and Carly, too: that she doesn't want them (or Jason) to have any part in how she raises her baby, as Michael is Exhibit A for what happens when you let your child be raised by [!@#$%^&*] sociopaths. TBH, I wouldn't trust this regime to tell an abortion rights story since it's clear they don't even understand how babies are made (hi, Gio, Sasha and Cody!).
