Nowadays fans are up in arms about pre emptions for major political events, imagine the outcry if Days was interrupted by a report about the moon.

How times have changed. That whole race to the moon was deemed big news. Did the average viewer really care?

5 of the first 7 "Days" preemptions were for the moon:

Thu. 11/25/65      NCAA FOOTBALL: OKLAHOMA VS. NEBRASKA
    Wed. 12/15/65    GEMINI 6 & 7 RENDEZVOUS COVERAGE
Thu. 3/17/66       GEMINI TITAN 8 PRESS CONFERENCE
Thu. 6/16/66       SURVEYOR LUNAR MISSION PRESS CONFERENCE
    Tue. 7/12/66       ALL-STAR BASEBALL GAME
Fri. 11/11/66       GEMINI 12 COVERAGE (AGENA TARGET VEHICLE LAUNCH)
    Tue. 11/15/66     GEMINI 12 RETURN/SPLASHDOWN

Then there were none again until 1969:

Thu. 3/6/69       APOLLO IX SPACE WALK
Mon. 7/21/69    APOLLO 11 COVERAGE OF MOON TAKEOFF
    Thu. 7/24/69     APOLLO 11 RETURN/SPLASHDOWN
    Fri. 4/17/70       APOLLO 13 LANDING
Fri. 2/5/71          APOLLO 14 MOON WALK
Fri. 7/30/71        APOLLO 15 MOON LANDING
    Fri. 4/21/72       APOLLO 16 LAUNCH
    Thu. 4/27/72     APOLLO 16 RETURN/SPLASHDOWN
    Tue. 12/19/72    APOLLO 17 RETURN/SPLASHDOWN

    And since 1973:

Tue. 4/14/81      COLUMBIA SPACE SHUTTLE LANDING
Tue. 1/28/86      CHALLENGER SPACE SHUTTLE EXPLOSION
Thu. 10/29/98   JOHN GLENN RETURNS TO SPACE ON DISCOVERY SHUTTLE
Tue. 2/4/03      COLUMBIA SPACE SHUTTLE MEMORIAL SERVICE

Since 2015, DAYS has had national preemptions *only* for sports and presidential inaugurations (if you count the November dog show as "sports" ) .
    Jason's stats:
    https://www.jason47.com/days/preemptions.html

In contrast. GH calls preemptions for many news events.

I think it's more that NBC doesn't care if much of the country doesn't see "Days" in its regular time slot and is forced to watch it on Peacock. In fact, that happened even before Peacock was created. It's been that way, since you mentioned, since at least 2015. There have been many episodes of "Days" fully preempted in almost the entire country for special reports and it no longer matters to NBC. The old rule was that if 20 minutes of an episode was preempted on the East Coast (or to a lesser extent, the West Coast, since the episode had already aired in a majority of the country), that would trigger a national preemption for the entire country and the episode would be pushed back a day. Now, whether they air special reports or not, the episodes continue to air as planned, regardless of how small of a percentage of affiliates air the episode.

I wonder if at some point in the 50's the hired help were fired as the Carey's had to do some belt tightening when the movie roles dried up?

He had the security of a Paramount contract in the 40's.

After some additional research, I found another unexpected Days actor to have had a maid in 1950 as well: 3-year-old Jane Elliot. Her dad was an attorney. I found one mention of her real last name in a 1965 interview she did: Stein, so that got the ball rolling on finding her in the 1950 census.

Jason, that's a hoot and a half! Very cool info!

Very!  I'm quite surprised and happy to see that the 1950 census is now already searchable by name. It was only released 2 months ago, so I thought we wouldn't be able to get the search-by-name feature available until some point in 2022, but it only took two months!

Seeing Jim Reynolds, I've learned he was actually born in Kansas City and raised in Oskaloosa, so that's new info to me (I found a newspaper article to verify that as well).

Also, Mac Carey was already rich enough in 1950 to employ both a live-in nanny and maid!

Did any of these actors actually pop up periodically?  I think Mike/Donna might have appeared once or twice more to finish up their stories and obviously Sam cam back to die, but they were never used in a recurring capacity, correct?

Wesley Eure was the only one who ever had a contract, and he did remain as recurring from June 1980-January 1981. Tracey Bregman and Andrea Hall were never on contract, and they never did return after their stints wrapped in April 1980 (other than for Samantha to be killed off in 1982).

Wesley Eure (Mike Horton) recurring: 6/6/74-9/25/74; contract: 10/3/74-5/21/80; recurring 6/9/80-1/16/81
Andrea Hall (Samantha Evans) recurring: 7/15/77-6/21/78; 1/10/79-4/18/80; 5/21/82-5/25/82

Some articles dealing with the Days drama at that time

    March 13 1980

Big changes over at "Days of Our Lives" include a new head writer. Nina Laemmle has taken over for Elizabeth Har-rower. Ms. Harrower, mother of Susan Seaforth Hayes (Julie, "Days of Our Lives"), might Just return to "Young and the Restless" where she got her soap opera writing start. With Harrower's departure will come the usual exit of stars. Eileen Barrett (Stephanie) has already left, and it looks like Margaret Mason (Linda) may be the next casualty. Of course, many storylines will suddenly come to a halt and new ones will begin.

    April 20 1980

Days  fans feel cheated as plots fizzle out  NEW YORK — Things are getting worse every day on the set of "Days of Our Lives” Folks on the show don’t know from one day to the next whether they’ll still have a job at the end of the week The venerable and once-Nielsen-ratlngs queen of the soaps has fallen on dire times and desperate measures continue to be taken.

The move to “alter” the cast and character lineup on the show began last month when a new headwriter Nina Laemmle was hired. But within a six-week time period more people have left the show at one time than in any other period in the show’s history. Half of the current cast has been given walking papers or they’ve been informed that their characters will be “in and out tem-' poraries” “Days” is beginning to resemble a graveyard.

Already “killed off’ have been Mark Tapscott (Bob Anderson) Eileen Barnett (Stephanie Woodruff) and Suzanne Zenor (Margo Horton). Leaving towners include Dan Barton (Earle Carnes) Robert Clary (Robert LeClare) Corinne Conley (Phyllis Curtis) Cindy Daly (Cathy Breton) Thomas Havens (Stan Kositcheck) Gail Johnson (Mimi) Debbie Lytton (Melissa Phillips) Mikey Martin (Dougie LeClare) Margaret Mason (Linda Anderson) Steve Schnetzer (Steve Olsen) John Stevenson (Terry Gilbert) and Ed Mallory and Rosemary Forsyth (Bill and Laura Horton).

Wesley Eure (Mike Horton) Tracy Bregman (Donna Craig) and Andrea Hall-Lovell (Samantha Evans) are among those who may “pop up” periodically in the story but for the time being will be put in limbo '

Adding those additional actors from the story above. The story does not mention the exits of John Lupton (Tommy), George McDaniel (Jordan) and Natasha Ryan (Hope).

So Laemmle had to write out these characters and create new ones?  I wonder if she even knew that going in or what it would entail.

As mentioned above, all the characters except for Mike, Margo and Hope were already written out before she joined the show, but yes, she definitely knew she would be responsible for creating 8 entirely new contract roles, since they all debuted in her first 13 episodes, from 3659-3671:

    3659- Stephen Brooks (Joshua Fallon)
    3660- Charles Bateman (Maxwell Jarvis)

So Laemmle had to write out these characters and create new ones?  I wonder if she even knew that going in or what it would entail.

PFS had a much clearer idea of what she wanted to do and where she was going with these characters and new families. PFS also shifted the shows tone a lot to fit the new characters while Laemmle just kept the tone of the show basically the same and inserted new characters doing similar things lol.  The show just seemed 'younger' and 'fresher' even if PFS was ripping off GH.  I always felt Days in the late 70's and early 80's were giving their youngish leads such dour, sad stories that were 'too old' for them.  IMO, it was much more entertaining to watch Marlena/Roman do action/adventure stuff than watching Marlena loose a child, get cheated on, get divorced, and get raped in a year or so.  But I can understand fans missing the more psychological, character driven drama of the past.

I think Laemmle's failure and the failure do make significant ratings gains lead to PFS being able to change the show to her vision without much push back.

Most of the characters were written out before Laemmle ever appears on a script. Based on what I had read years back, I thought it would be all Laemmle, but once I finally got all of the script covers, I confirmed all the firings actually happened before she arrived. The only main characters who were written out once Laemmle first joined the show were Mike, Margo and Hope.

I think those firings and changes were spearheaded by Al Rabin, after he was brought on as co-EP, because it all pretty much began right as soon as he got there.

He became EP in Episode # 3595, and the characters started being written out as of # 3613, so yes, that lines up with it being Rabin more so than the head writers, since the firings were split up pretty equally between Harrower, Flippen and Laemmle.

Laemmle didn't even know how soaps were even conducted, based on what Jed Allan said in an interview that summer. She wasn't even writing the outlines, which I assume was being done by Ruth Brooks Flippen. (I don't believe that Flippen was ever really head writer). Flippen was arguably even more out-of-date than Laemmle, not having written for TV for even longer and also having never been credited for soap work.

I pulled the Flippen/Laemmle script covers to check exactly what they say:

For Flippen's 25 episodes, this is how the scripts list the writers:

For Laemmle's 124 episodes, there aren't many where she's listed solo as the outline writer (just 25 of them). But there's no overlap of Flippen & Laemmle. For the outlines, it looks like most are either written by the script writer as well, and then 3714-3760 list it as a duo for the outline: Written by: Nina Laemmle/Michelle Poteet-Lisanti. And then 3761-3782, the outlines were done by the duo of Michelle Poteet-Lisanti & L. Virginia Browne.

@JAS0N47It seems as though Days is all caught up after the 2 week Olympic and 1 day preemption as todays episode was clearly meant for Friday the 13th of May. Any idea how they caught up so fast? I was under the impression that with the preemptions, they wouldn't get caught up for months. Did they re-edit?

I found out about the preemptions on November 12, which is the day I posted about it on the web. I'm guessing the people at Days probably found out a little sooner than that. They were taping April at that point, so they would have written through some point in May at that point So this was always the time frame where the episodes would get back on track.

Thanks for the tags as always!  I checked in my records from a long time ago that I had # 185 through 193 (except for # 191). When I saw 8/8/66 (# 191) posted today, I thought maybe this person might have additional episodes that I did not have, but this is not 8/8/66, it is 8/9/66 (# 192). So it looks like there may be just one more episode (8/10/66, # 193). I don't know if they'll post the wrong airdate and say that their next post is 8/9/66, but it will actually be 8/10/66. But in any case, I'm glad this opened up these episodes to a lot of new people!

Here is the info for the missing episode, # 191:

    191...8/8/66:

Cast: Tom, Julie, David, Susan, Bill, Dr. Hendricks.

Sets: David & Susan’s Apartment, Tom’s Study, Hospital Corridor with Phone, Hospital Waiting Room.
  15. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE "DAYS" DAYTIME EMMY NOMINEES & LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT RECIPIENT!

    3822135a398a8a18dde3a813675b06bd5986df86

Congratulations to Lifetime Achievement Award recipient John Aniston (Victor) and to the 7 "Days" acting Emmy nominees: Marci Miller (Abigail), Arianne Zucker (Nicole), Eric Martsolf (Brady), James Reynolds (Abe), Stacy Haiduk (Kristen), Lindsay Arnold (Allie) and Michael Lowry (Dr. Snyder).
This is the 5th nomination for Arianne Zucker as Nicole Walker (previously nominated in 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2020).
This is the 4th nomination for James Reynolds as Abe Carver (previously nominated in 2004, 2017 and winning in 2018) and 5th nomination overall (he was also nominated for his role on "Generations" in 1991).
This is the 3rd nomination for Eric Martsolf as Brady Black, his first as Lead Actor (previously winning in 2014 and nominated in 2019 for Supporting Actor).
This is the 3rd nomination for Marci Miller as Abigail DiMera (previously nominated in 2018 and 2019).
This is the 1st nomination for Stacy Haiduk as Kristen DiMera and 2nd nomination overall (she was also nominated for her role on "The Young and the Restless" in 2017).
Lindsay Arnold (Allie) and Michael Lowry (Dr. Snyder) are both first-time nominees for their "Days" roles.
  16. AUDITION POSTED FIVE MONTHS AGO..."ADELE" (OR CODE NAME)

Here's another Vimeo audition posted five months ago. As always, the names and storyline details could be changed to hide the actual storyline:

    ADELE: Go away.
ERIC: I'm delivering something for Rafe.
ADELE: Why don't you have your girlfriend drop it off?
    ERIC: You know why.
ADELE: Am I supposed to be flattered?
ERIC: Look, ever since you came to town you have been cold. I know you're all about the job but...
ADELE: But what? You find it impossible that I'm not falling all over you.
    ERIC: You used to be...
ADELE: Yeah, well, things change. And I don't know, maybe the whole you getting a girlfriend a week after we broke up thing kind of killed it for me.
    ERIC: Adele, don't do that.
ADELE: Don't what? Don't lie? Oh, right, that's your department. Lying and leaving.
ERIC: You were the one who asked me to. You said you didn't want a relationship. That you wanted your freedom.
ADELE: I'm not doing this right now. You know, I came back and tried to track you down. Yeah, I even stopped by your old place. Tried to find some clue as to what could have happened to you. But when I got to your place, you weren't there, but someone named Nicole was. She was wearing your shirt. Are you going to tell me that she was just a friend?
ERIC: So that's what this is. You're jealous.
ADELE: Jealous?! Seriously. Okay, look, I thought I would try being honest in hopes that maybe you might return the favor but obviously that is too much to ask. You know, maybe I did start to care for you more that I wanted to admit but I sure as hell don't now. You're not nearly as interesting as the job. You may pray over people, Eric, but I protect lives. I alter people's fate. Even on your best day, you don't hold a candle to that kind of rush.

I hope it's a legacy female who's now a female cop, ala Hope.

She said her last name is Hunter, so I thought of Marcus right away.

  17. AUDITION POSTED THREE MONTHS AGO..."JADA" (OR CODE NAME)...

Here's an audition posted to Vimeo three months ago. As always, the role could be for a character named Jada, or a "code name" for a different name. The audition could also change storyline details mentioned to hide what the scene is actually about.

JADA: You could sue, but you'd lose.
    MAN: What?
JADA: I'm sure Commissioner Hernandez explained that he had every right to bring you in. You'd been in possession of stolen property which was connected to a murder. Even the most junior attorney would have no trouble arguing that.
MAN: This is a private conversation.
JADA: Well, I could hear you from across the room, and since I know something about the law, I thought I'd save you a ton of time and money by telling you it's a lost cause.
    MAN: Money?
JADA: Lawyers are expensive and you have to miss work to appear in court, so, technically...
MAN: I was wronged and I intend to hold the department accountable.
JADA: Fine. Bring your suit. Just know that if you do, what you did to your old cellmate will most likely be dragged into it.
MAN: How do you know about that?
JADA: Admittedly, it's your word against his, but a good prosecutor could build a solid case against you. And, from what I hear, Melinda Trask is desperate for a win and will do anything to get it. So instead of borrowing trouble, maybe you want to back off.
MAN: And just who the hell are you?
JADA: Jada Hunter, pleasure to meet you.
MAN: Wish I could say the same.
