  1. Throw in the idea that GH isn't receiving the funding/research/regulation it badly needs and you've got a relevance angle, too.
  2. A pity that didn't pan out. This might have been a mess, continuity-wise, but I'm now trying to imagine Zaslow as Tony #4 (with at least some of David's backstory).
  3. *fiddles with handkerchief* I would like to talk about ... Jenny Eckert. *support group screams in trauma and frustration* No, but seriously, I'm actually kinda impressed that the show didn't rush her and Paul into bed. If I read the summaries right, that didn't actually happen until February 1993, after nearly two years of will they or won't they tension.
  4. Grace didn't care much for serving dishes ...
  5. Speaking of cake, I'll never forget Tabitha receiving (of all things) an angel food cake from Charity.
  6. I keep meaning to try it. It's apparently just a spice cake. What I remember was the show treating it as an item of gross-out cuisine. Wasn't there a scene where Julian was at a junkyard and found a cake pan with some soup residue? Naturally, it dripped out. Well, that settles it. Lobster from The Lobster Shack (not sure when that place was written out), "love noodles" and tomato soup cake for us all.
  7. This was what I was hoping for. I found a sample of listings for the Cleveland-Pittsburgh-northernmost West Virginia area between 1994-1999. PITTSBURGH -- While KDKA (CBS) and WPXI (NBC) aired their networks' full soap lineup in 1994-1995, by late October 1995, WTAE (ABC) had dropped LOVING for The Golden Girls. Instead of THE CITY, WTAE aired Judge Judy as of February 1997. At that time until at least March 199, WPXI was airing SUNSET BEACH at 1, ANOTHER WORLD at 2 and DAYS OF OUR LIVES at 3. KDKA kept its lineup intact by late winter 1999. CLEVELAND -- WEWS (ABC) and WJW/WOIO (CBS) aired their networks' full soap lineup as scheduled in 1994-1999. By February 1997, WKYC (NBC) moved DOOL to 11 a.m. SUNSET aired at 1 and AW at 2 p.m., an arrangement which remained for March 1999. Side note: WEWS was more likely to preempt ABC's morning programming in favor of its own show, The Morning Exchange. When "MX" was still a two-hour show, Mike and Maty aired at 4 a.m. in Cleveland. Caryl & Marilyn: Real Friends aired at 2:35 a.m. By 1999, MX was cut to an hour, airing at 10 between Regis & Kathie Lee and The View. WHEELING/STEUBENVILLE -- WTRF (CBS) and WTOV (NBC) aired their networks' full soap lineup in 1994-1999. WTOV aired SUNSET BEACH at 11 a.m., with news and Mad About You (later, Extra) as the lead-in to DOOL and AW. YOUNGSTOWN -- WKBN (CBS) and WWTV (ABC) aired their networks' full soap lineup in 1994-1999. WFMJ (NBC) aired SUNSET at 3 p.m., following DOOL and AW.
  8. That's how it was in Columbus, Ohio, in the fall of 1997. SUNSET at 1, AW at 2, DOOL at 3. The ABC and CBS stations aired their soaps in the usual order. One more for tonight: WRGB, the CBS station in Schenectady, New York, was airing GL at 9 a.m. in September 1989. The 3 p.m. hour went to Everyday (presumably a talk-local show). I'd heard about DYNASTY being cut into half-hour installments for syndication, but didn't know FALCON CREST did the same.
  9. May 1973 in the Green Bay, Wisconsin region: ATWT aired at 3 p.m., rather than 1:30 p.m. on WBAY. The station also preempted The CBS Morning News, The Joker's Wild (for an exercise show; it aired on the ABC station, WLUK) and The Price Is Right (for ATWT). AMC aired on both WLUK and WLUC, the CBS station in Marquette, Michigan, at 1 p.m. Tuscon, Arizona, as of late September 1976 (Mountain Time Zone): KVOA (NBC) 8:00 Donahue 9:00 Fun Factory 9:30 Gong Show 10:00 Sanford & Son 10:30 Celebrity Sweepstakes 11:00 Wheel of Fortune 11:30 Hollywood Squares 12:00 News 12:30 The Doctors 1:00 Another World 2:00 Somerset 2:30 Days of Our Lives 3:30 Medical Center 4:30 The Odd Couple KGUN (ABC) 9:00 Happy Days 9:30 All My Children 10:00 Ryan's Hope 10:30 Family Feud 11:00 $20,000 Pyramid 11:30 One Life to Live 12:15 General Hospital 1:00 The Edge of Night 1:30 Hot Seat 2:00 Afternoon Movie 4:00 I Dream of Jeannie 4:30 ABC Evening News KOLD (CBS) 8:00 Price is Right 9:00 Tucson Today 9:30 Search for Tomorrow 10:00 Love of Life 10:30 As the World Turns 11:30 Guiding Light 12:00 News 12:30 Match Game 1:00 Tattletales 1:30 All in the Family 2:00 Gambit 2:30 Young and the Restless 3:00 Dinah! 4:30 Adam-12 Eleven years later, in the summer of 1987: AW was still at 1 p.m. on KVOA, with SANTA BARBARA at 2. DOOL aired at 11 a.m. This was the same arrangement for KPNX in Phoenix and KYEL in Yuma. While KGUN aired both RH and LOVING in the 11 a.m. hour, KTVK in Phoenix aired news and LOVING. On both stations, it went AMC (12), OLTL (1) and GH (2). On KTSP in Phoenix, the arrangement went Y&R at 11, news and B&B at 12, then ATWT at 1 and GL at 2. Over on KOLD, it was Y&R at 10:30, B&B at 11:30, then ATWT at 12 and GL at 1.
  10. I have to say, I'm fascinated by the idea of Y&R going up against Oprah in some markets. In my hometown, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Oprah aired on the CBS station (based out of Kalamazoo) at 4. I don't think that changed up until GL went off the air. I also remember Oprah facing Rosie O'Donnell (which aired on the NBC station). Anyway, Amarillo, Texas (April 2000) -- Central Time Zone KAMR (NBC) 9:00 am - Later Today 10:00 am - Leeza 11:00 am - Judge Mills Lane 11:30 am - News 12:00 pm - Days of Our Lives 1:00 pm - Passions 2:00 pm - Donny & Marie 3:00 pm - Maury 4:00 pm - Oprah Winfrey KVII (ABC) 9:00 am - Live -- Regis & Kathie Lee 10:00 am - The View 11:00 am - Judge Joe Brown 11:30 am - Judge Joe Brown 12:00 pm - News 12:30 pm - Jeopardy! 1:00 pm - One Life to Live 2:00 pm - General Hospital 3:00 pm - Rosie O'Donnell 4:00 pm - Judge Judy 4:30 pm - Judge Judy KDFA (CBS) 9:00 am - Dr. Joy Browne 10:00 am - The Price is Right 11:00 am - The Young and the Restless 12:00 pm - News 12:30 pm - The Bold and the Beautiful 1:00 pm - As the World Turns 2:00 pm - Guiding Light 3:00 pm - Sally Jessy Raphael 4:00 pm - Hollywood Squares 4:30 pm - News of Texas Oh, and over in Spokane, Washington, both RH and EON weren't airing on the ABC station (KXLY) as of mid-June 1983. I'm wondering if it aired LOVING. Meanwhile, in September 1989, ABC's Sarasota station (WWSB) was airing LOVING, while the St. Petersburg station (WTSP) aired The Judge (?). WTVT, CBS in Tampa, aired a local show at 12:30, had Y&R up an hour and didn't air B&B.
  11. Whoa, Tony kinda punched above his weight class by taking on Fulton, et. al.
  12. From the clips I've seen, I liked Lucky and Jake, too. I always think it's fun when soap characters have non-main character friends.
  13. Brian Tarantina, 60, who played Lucky Lippman and, a decade later, Ray Castillo, has died, apparently from a short illness. https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/brian-tarantina-dead-at-60-marvelous-mrs-maisel-actor-dies/
  14. ABC THE EDGE OF NIGHT -- Was airing at 10:30 a.m. on WJLA, the D.C. affiliate, as of Sept. 1983. Was no longer airing as of Nov. 1984. (In 1983 and 1984, the 4 p.m. slot went to Love Connection). -- Not airing on WJZ, the Baltimore affiliate, as of Sept. 1983 (the 4 p.m. slot went to The Love Boat). -- Not airing on WHTM, the Harrisburg affiliate, as of Nov. 1984 (the 4 p.m. slot went to The Dukes of Hazzard). RYAN'S HOPE -- Airing at 11:30 on WJLA as of Nov. 1984 (so presumably it took the slot right when ABC plugged LOV into the 12:30 slot). WJLA seems to have been trying to compete with CBS and NBC's in-network game shows. The station had a games block from 9-11:30 a.m., composed of syndication shows (Tic Tac Dough, Joker's Wild, Let's Make a Deal), then Family Feud as the lead-in for Trivia Trap. In 1983, the post-GMA hours were more eclectic. The 20-Minute Workout and Richard Simmons at 9, followed by Family Feud and EON at 10, then Too Close For Comfort and LOV at 11. You'd think they'd have considered putting the two soaps together ... -- Not airing on WJZ as of Nov. 1984 (the 12 p.m. slot went to news and the post-GMA slots, in 1983 and 1984, went to People Are Talking and Hour Magazine). -- Was airing at 12 p.m. on WHTM as of Nov. 1984. St. Louis, as of Friday, Sept. 27, 1996: KMOV (CBS) 12:00: News, then B&B 1:00: ATWT 2:00: GL 3:00: Inside Edition and Rescue 911 4:00: Y&R Do we have any Missourians reading? I wonder if Y&R had a decent amount of popularity with kids coming home from school. KSDK (NBC) 12:00: News hour 1:00: AW 2:00: DOOL 3:00: Show Me St. Louis and Jeopardy! 4:00: Oprah KDNL (ABC) 11:30: (Where THE CITY would have presumably aired): I Love Lucy 12:00: AMC 1:00: OLTL 2:00: GH 3:00: Ricki Lake 4:00: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Home Improvement
  15. If I remember correctly, that's how it went for WZZM and maybe even WOTV, the lead and secondary ABC affiliates in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
  16. Nice stuff, Titus! You're certainly providing us with an interesting picture of the south.
  17. Some more. ABC THE EDGE OF NIGHT -- Not airing on WTNH, the New Haven, Connecticut affiliate, as of Oct. 1981. The 4 p.m. hour was used for Merv Griffin. -- Airing on a delay at 9:30 a.m. on WGGB, the Springfield affiliate, as of Oct. 1981. The 4 p.m. hour was used for The Waltons. RYAN'S HOPE -- Airing at 11:30 a.m. on WJLA, the Washington, D.C. affiliate, as of Oct. 1985. The 12 p.m. slot was used for news. -- Not airing on WJZ, the Baltimore affiliate, as of Oct. 1985. The 12 p.m. slot was used for news. -- Not airing on WTAE, the Pittsburgh affiliate, as of Oct. 1985. The 12 p.m. slot was used for news. LOVING -- Not airing on WTSP, the St. Petersburg, Florida, affiliate, as Oct. 1989. The 12:30 slot was used for The Judge. CBS AS THE WORLD TURNS -- Not airing on KDKA, the Pittsburgh affiliate, as of Oct. 1985. CAPITOL -- Airing at 1:30 p.m. on KDKA, the Pittsburgh affiliate, as of Oct. 1985. The 2 p.m. hour was used for Pittsburgh 2Day. THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL -- Not airing on WTVT, the Tampa affiliate, as of Oct. 1989. Eye on Tampa Bay ran at 12:30, followed by Y&R.
  18. The Ratings in the '80s thread, particularly the comments about shows not airing or at unusual times in certain markets, has inspired me to start this thread. It's as thorough as we can make it, I guess. A few months ago, I stumbled upon Radio Discussions, which has a lot of vintage, market-specific listings. The only thing that stinks is that they're from certain time periods. I guess I'll have to do some cross-referencing. Everyone's welcome to join, especially those who have specific memories. Certainly something to keep busy with for a while. Anyway ... ABC RYAN'S HOPE -- Did not air on WITI, Milwaukee's ABC station, as of late October 1975. The timeslot (12 p.m. Central/1 p.m. Eastern) was used for news. -- Did not air on WDTN, Dayton's ABC station, as of mid-October 1984. The noon timeslot went to news. -- Aired at 9 a.m., apparently on a delay, on WKRC, Cincinnati's ABC station, as of mid-October 1984. The noon timeslot went to news. GENERAL HOSPITAL -- Did not air on WDTN as of mid-October 1984. The station ran cartoons from 3-5 p.m. THE EDGE OF NIGHT -- Did not air on WDTN as of mid-October 1984, preempted for the cartoon block. -- Aired at 9:30 a.m., apparently on a delay, on WKRC. The 4 p.m. timeslot went to The Dukes of Hazzard. CBS SEARCH FOR TOMORROW -- Did not air on WISN, Milwaukee's CBS station, as of late October 1975. SEARCH's timeslot and the free half-hour following were used for Dialing For Dollars. NBC SEARCH FOR TOMORROW -- Aired at 1:30 p.m. on WLWT, Cincinnati's NBC station, as of mid-October 1984. WLWT took some interesting liberties with NBC's lineup. DOOL in the morning, Sale of the Century at 1 p.m. and Wheel of Fortune at 4. The only network shows not to be jumbled around were Today (obviously), Scrabble, Another World and Santa Barbara. -- Did not air on WKEF, Dayton's NBC station, as of mid-October 1984. The station aired All in the Family. DAYS OF OUR LIVES -- Aired at 10:30 a.m. on WLWT as of mid-October 1984
  19. Part IV. Felicia cuts the crap, Victor's body is found and Duke makes a cameo.
  20. Part III. Ask yourself if Katherine going as Tonto would fly today. Also, she's not really a soap star, but Janis Paige (Aunt Iona) is still with us. I'm still not sure what to make of Anna's outfit. Sexy matron?
  21. How many of us are familiar with James from London, at Soap Chat? He's written many, many insightful commentaries on the '80s super-soaps, then outdid himself with an oral history of Dynasty. It holds together better than I expected. Forgive the intrusion from another site, but, well, here's the story breakdowns for several seasons of YOUNG ALEXIS. Personally, I think it should be a theatrical experience, not unlike the "Spoon River Anthology." http://soapchat.net/threads/the-dynasty-verse-an-oral-history.6952/
  22. Part II. Elizabeth Savage, evidently just before she played Gwyn on LOVING. And I suspect I'm in the minority, but I feel kinda bad for Colton.
  23. Thirty years ago, give or take ... Halloween at Wyndermere. The costumes are across-the-board impressive, but I'm shaking my head at quite a few of them. Like what on earth is Monica supposed to be? I could be mistaken, but I think these were Jane's last episodes before her maternity leave and Christine Jones' temporary run as Tracy. Also, in the battle between Frisco and Colton ... I'll take Scotty.
  24. Miss Ellie's fallible side should have been explored more. On the other hand, the fact that she and Jock never quite reconciled their failings as parents made for some really good drama. The J.R./Miss Ellie scene is a classic, but I also love Jock's reaction at the end of his encounter.
  25. Good point about preemptions and out of pattern timeslots. I stand by my call that CAP is an obvious weak link circa '85-'86, but it does seem like the affiliates played a pretty big role for the shows at the bottom of the heap.
