My Mother told me that she was on the phone with my sister earlier this week and my sister (who had been evacuated from her apartment because of Hurricane Matthew's aftermath in NC) had to cut her phone call short because it was the first day of early voting and she was going to vote. Women are indeed rising up to "Grab 'Em by the Vote" as one slogan put it. Oddly enough, even though I haven't seen Moore's Trumpland, the review I read made it seem as if it were less about Trump and more about backing Clinton even proposing that based on her work with organizations like the Children's Defense Fund speaks more of the kind of President she may truly turn out to be, rather than the political figure that many have come to demonize over the years. Would you say that N. Virginia is more left-leaning or more conservative?

This is so good! POTUS is well aware of what many of us have been discussing, some of these issues for years now.

I've also read that early voting in swing states has favored HRC. Polls vs. actual voting tallies. Women are definitely showing up to the polls though, that is abundantly clear.- The Politics Thread

Hillary appeared to do much better (as usual) than Trump. From the clips I saw she actually appeared to be funny and was received well by the crowd. Trump is just a bitter b*tch and I'm eager to be rid of him.- The Politics Thread

That he talks in circles, lies constantly and says "bigly" as if it is a real word. The bar was set pathetically low for that guy. The way the Trump people talk, it's almost as if he wants to transport us all back to the 1880s.- The Politics Thread

The "drug lords" stuff makes me wonder if he's going to channel that Duterte guy too. Maybe Paul Manafort can help out again... As much as Trump tried to keep himself in check, there were several times where he reverted back to nature and became unhinged. The Putin puppet talk, the Bad Hombres garble are two examples. He really sounds as if he is stanning Putin, which is disturbing but far from the most disturbing he's said tonight.- The Politics Thread
It's going to be on every news front page that Trump refused to agree that he will accept the results of the election should he not win. This is the talk of despots and demagogues.- The Politics Thread
I've always wondered how it's remained red all these years, given it's diverse populace. Same goes for a lot of the South (my home) - this region is more than just rednecks... The GOP promoted itself as the party of family, faith and traditional values, which I suspect appealed to many Latinos, particularly in the South and Southwest. Also, many Latinos migrated from countries that had governments that were seen as oppressing personal freedoms (Cuba, El Salvador, Nicaragua, etc) or at war (Colombia), and the anti-Communist, anti-socialist rhetoric that the GOP offered probably seemed like a comfort to people flocking to the U.S. from politically unstable countries. I think it was different for the Latinos settling in Northeastern states or even California because states like New York (especially New York City) generally saw the Democrats as more attractive because of Democratic rhetoric promoting socio-economic values, emphasis on promoting the social good of all, no matter where you come from, contributing to the growth of a better society for all. Whereas the Republicans emphasized 'up by your bootstraps' success of the individual, the Democrats emphasized maintaining and cultivating programs that would help people succeed and even 'a helping hand' to success for those who needed it. To Latinos who were migrating from countries that they loved but where economic opportunity was lacking (Puerto Rico, the DR, a few South American countries that were in economic turmoil, e.g. Argentina), the Democratic party must have seemed like a window of opportunity, while allowing them to keep their identities with them. The anti-immigrant voices in the GOP have been gradually getting louder and more prominent over the past 20 years and so has the shift of many Latinos from the GOP to the Dems I think you're also seeing some generational splits in the Latino community. For example, a lot of younger Cuban-Americans now favor eliminating the embargo, while some of their grandparents (and even some parents) may still be hardliners. In Texas, many Mexican-American young women (under 45) have been opting for education and career before marriage or children, many are having smaller families, less children and so family planning and organizations like PP are no longer shunned and the support for women having choices is getting more vocal support from the Latino community and groups of highly educated Mexican-Americans are now opting for political choices that reflect their progressive stance. From what I've read, experienced from talking to friends, I feel like the shift has been happening but it has been very gradual.- The Politics Thread
During the last Presidential election in 2012, I remember reading an article where some Texans based in Austin talked of their passion to turn the state blue. If that does indeed happen, I suspect that it will be due to a combination of factors (of which revulsion for Trump might be just one of them). I'm reading this review of Michael Moore's spontaneously released film and this may in fact be the real October surprise. According to this NYT article, Moore (a Sanders supporter) actually makes a case for supporting Hillary Review: ‘Michael Moore in TrumpLand’ Isn’t About Donald Trump Well, this is what many of us hope will happen. She was once my Senator and she did good work (often times, quietly going on about the business of accomplishing tasks) in the two years that she was there, surprising even her detractors and people who thought they had her pegged. Hopefully she will do so again as President.- The Politics Thread
The lead contaminated soil in poorer neighborhoods in Indiana is every bit as awful as the lead contaminated water in Flint but you wouldn't know this judging by how little press it gets. I know a VP isn't running for President but Pence has gotten the least amount of scrutiny of any VP candidate that I can remember!- The Politics Thread
I've been saying the GOP would split since the emergence of the Tea Party. A few days ago, one article in the NYT stated that Arizona and Georgia were both "possible" for HRC to win, as well as the possibility of the Democratic party in Senate races. That's the most I've heard in the MSM.- The Politics Thread
