That's why I wonder if there was some re-writes. They dragged the story out for months and months, and then, like you said, they killed of the bad guys almost back-to-back. I'm not sure how far in advance they film but I don't think it's more than a month, so there could very well have been some pressure from above due to the unpopularity of the storyline.

So, they killed off Celia, Ray and John.... taking the easy way out with all three. But does that mean that the darkness and misery will be toned down? Apparently not, for now Joe will blackmail Victoria and Robert with the knowledge that Victoria killed John, Moira will be implicated in Celia's slavery ring and Cain will have cancer. Oh, and we also have the whole affair with Charity's baby lie to deal with. And there will obviously be some dark secret behind Graham's return from the dead.....

It's been absolutely abysmal for a very long time, and bordering on unwatchable. It's been relentless misery and it's hard to understand why they've gone down this road with such seeming determination. There's just been no relief from the darkness, and the fact that Kevin has been seen as that just proves my point. He's a psychopathic violent ex-con, and that he has been perceived as a light-hearted part of the show speaks volumes.
