GH: AMC actress joining
Maria was never much of a character, and I don't see a reason to bring her back. With that said, casting Eva will only remind longtime ABC Daytime viewers of Maria. It feels like a lose-lose proposition. They should have cast another actress in the part. I also never thought Eva was that great an actress to warrant a high profile casting, but we'll see. Best of luck to her.

The period you're in does have better writing for them. Unfortunately, that changes where we are now (which is mostly repeating the same scene over and over to prepare for their breakup).

Clifton Davis ad that likely ran around the time he was on the show.

Radio Soap Opera Discussion
I've listened to a few - the one where Meta is staying over at Trudy's and Trudy is horrible to her, and one around the same time where Meta is terrified of her son and husband going on a camping trip together. They're very gripping. Jone Allison has the perfect voice for a radio soap. I wish more of her work as Meta was available on the show. Archive has a clump of radio soap episodes someone put up recently in one file. There's one for GL that is about Bill's alcoholism. I haven't listened yet, but I assume it's one you mentioned as being from the 1950 pile.

The one positive is this happened in February instead of October. The problem is it's a self-fulfilling prophecy because any time Biden appears in front of a camera, they can recycle the same script. I just have to hope he can somehow still manage a narrow win. I do worry about the polls as most are negative, but I have to remind myself most polls, or all polls, are trash these days, even those that have results I want to believe. Most people now don't respond to them, and they are often curated for a specific agenda.- The Politics Thread
It's given the media even more incentive to talk about this issue constantly and act like they are breaking something shocking due to the rubes not knowing about worries over Biden's age and memory (even though this has been brought up all the time for five years). The media doesn't care about any of these issues with Trump, because he makes them more money and they still see him as funny and wild and free. I saw various right wing accounts going on about how "even CNN" has covered this report and the age issues constantly today...another reminder of the power of their victim bubble where they can lie that CNN has been anything but right wing for many, many years. This led to an article with Paul Begala going on about how terrible the whole thing is, how Biden handled it horribly, and "joking" that he is a Democrat because he slept like a baby - waking up every two hours after wetting the bed. I have long disliked and resented Begala and Carville, who last had any merit over 30 years ago (and they were greatly helped by Ross Perot) yet never ignore an opportunity to shove their faces in front of a camera. It's clear that the media has a narrative and Trump as their tough hero (as CNN reminded us today "his best day of 2024") is top of the list. They hate us and they hate this country. Whether the public agrees, I don't know. I wish Biden hadn't run again, but unfortunately, I also don't think anyone else would be in a better position (no, not even Gavin Newsom, or Gretchen Whitmer, who would be torn apart by the same machine in place against Biden). It's hard to imagine any Democrat scraping through this year. Any win will be extremely narrow, but a win is a win. I also hope Democrats realize just how many people are still struggling financially and no number of headlines about how the economy is better will change their minds.- GH: Classic Thread

Given that Paley was a recurring presence in those years and also began appearing before Beverlee left the show, I don't think anyone would say that Beverlee's exit led them to hire her. I do think that there's a correlation with the health of the show and getting rid of longtime or compelling characters for the sake of flash in the pan hires. That's just me, and I don't really want to get into it in great detail, as the thread was already shut down once lately as it is.- Another World Discussion Thread
I don't think it's as much about duty as what can be for the health of the show. AW had so much writing turnover that what inspires one of many writers doesn't really stand out, especially since in many cases those who were brought in were often brought in more for name value than inspiring the writer (Larry Lau, Denise Alexander, Sharon Gabet, Chris Robinson). The Sin Stalker era is so plot-driven and the characters are so flat it's hard to know what characters inspired the writers anyway. In theory, killing off a regarded character could be a jolt to a story (like the Loving murders), but AW had already killed off and written out so many only the year before, I'm not sure if it got that type of response here.- Neighbours: Discussion Thread
She has this tendency to deliver dramatic lines like she's about to burst into tears. This happens over and over. It's unfortunate because on paper Nell's struggles were very compelling. Ryan Moloney has also delivered a number of howlers throughout this story. I don't know if you have gotten to the scene yet where Toadie is popping a squat while raking leaves and looking demented. Constipation/crazy eyes tend to carry the day. Overall, I think the revival has had a lot of good moments, but the Toadie/Mel/Terese/Paul story has consistently been the most difficult part for me to get through (along with Haz - I have no idea where you are in the story so I should save my ranting on that manchild).- All My Children Tribute Thread
- GH: O’Connor/Van Etten OUT! Mulcahey/Korte IN!
Renaissance is one word for what Sheffer did at ATWT... As for bringing in new writers and training them into the ways of soaps, I'd love that, but those days are long gone, and I can't expect Mulcahey to do what the networks used to do themselves. I think we will still mostly be getting whoever is willing to hurriedly submit whatever Frank deems the most acceptable pabulum.- DAYS: Vet out!
DAYS probably just has a few years at best left anyway. I know that's been said for almost 20 years now, but nothing lasts forever. I hope the show doesn't end but if it does this lawsuit is likely going to be more of a scapegoat than a cause.- Port Charles Discussion Thread
