  1. Not the best choice to end on that bad acting audio. Not much suspense anywhere to be found. Give a raise to the ticking clock.
  2. @Reverend Ruthledge Thanks. It's a credit to Irna that she was willing to go back to mentions of the Brandons (who were never on the TV show) and the ugliness between Meta and Trudy which was also from the radio show. Clyde seems very forceful... I did laugh at him telling Meta Bruce was not right for her and Trudy telling her Mark was not right for her. Everything with Kathy is incredibly depressing and seems to be building to her death, even if she has a little more hope toward the end of the year. I don't know how I'd feel if I was sitting through this story every day. Bert hating Paul is amusing and compelling to read as it pops up through the year. I wonder where Irna intended that to lead. You could tell she already had so much built up in establishing Paul - no wonder he lasted even long after she left. I know they made clear that the reason Paul and Robin feel a connection is because of his being like a father to her, but it's impossible to not feel put off knowing that they would later marry. I wonder if Kathy's nightmare of Bob Lang brought the actor back or if we didn't actually see him.

  6. A few others: John Bolger was so beautiful to look at, and very sensual. I also credit him for being willing to play a very intimate scene with another man at the start of Parting Glances, at a time when it was a surefire career killer. There was something about Richard Bekins when he played Jamie on AW. It's like the cliche of the bookworm being the best lay. He managed to imbue his character with intelligence but also impulsiveness and an intensity which was always humming in the background. He was another reminder which would soon get lost that a man on a soap doesn't have to be a gym junkie to be attractive.
  7. Someone else will remember in more detail than I do, but there was a whole storyline tying in a record label to help Lujack become a rock star while simultaneously hypnotizing Billy into shooting Kyle, the newfound half-brother he despised. Lujack died in an explosion helping to defeat them. Billy did shoot Kyle, IIRC, and went on trial, but was exonerated. If you want more of a glimpse at '60s GL, there is an episode or two from earlier in the decade and then a chunk from summer 1966. This is near the end of the show still being 15 minutes and also when they were phasing the show from being in Selby Flats to Springfield. The Guiding Light - June 1966 (Vol. 1) The Guiding Light - June 1966 (Vol. 2) The Guiding Light - July 1966 (Vol. 1) The Guiding Light - July 1966 (Vol. 2) The Guiding Light - July 1966 (Vol. 3) The Guiding Light - July 1966 (Vol. 4) I think there are a few later July 1966 episodes on that channel too. As for what is the good or bad period of GL, GL was a rollercoaster for most of those last 25 years. In some ways that kept the show feeling punchy and more like a survivor than shows that are just consistent, but I would have loved a longer flavor of what is available of the Dobsons (late '70s to 1980) or from somewhere around 1989-1992. GL surviving so long was a miracle. The show's whole existence, being revived so many times in radio, being the only radio soap to really survive the transition to TV, was a miracle. It can be difficult to pick a best and worst sometimes in that cradle.
  8. Great minds. It just showed up on my algo. Thanks for all you share.
  9. I never knew his brother wrote for St. Elsewhere. By many accounts he was a really wonderful guy. Michael Mann's statement via Twitter: Terribly sad about Tom Noonan passing. In casting Manhunter I auditioned about 10-15 actors in New York when Tom walked in the door and said, “I don’t want to talk. I just want to read.” He read and it was magical. We worked closely. I based Dollarhyde less on the novel’s character and more on a convicted killer whom I met and with whom I corresponded who was doing life in Vacaville. I took Tom into that world and he made it his own. It was an automatic to cast Tom in a wheelchair as Kelso in Heat. He did so much more fine work, but it was as the battered child become a killer adult - both alive in the same bottle - that projected the range and deep soul of this so acute and committed artist. Rest in peace, Tom. Tom directed, wrote and co-starred in this movie, which became something of a cult classic. WHAT HAPPENED WAS - Full Movie in English | Thriller Comedy Drama Romance | HD 1080p A Random Roles interview with Tom. https://www.avclub.com/tom-noonan-1798218359 @dannpan That's awful. ALS seems to progress so quickly. I'm glad Eric is at peace.
  10. I think this may have been a "missing" episode, as the person who uploaded it was a contestant.
  11. That would make a lot of sense. What I've seen of him as Ed seems very overwrought, which isn't how I see Ed. I'm not sure if he is easier to watch on a day-to-day basis.
  12. I think we would have mostly just seen him in his lawyer role and not with a serious love interest. I think he would have ended up like Frank or Billy often were in their last decade on the canvas.
  13. What I love about that Jessie puppet sequence is the beauty shot. I don't think GL even had beauty shots much longer so one of the last being a moose amuses me. You're right that he had a real spark with MKA. I don't know why they never paired India with a man who would actually want her. I have never seen the reveal or Jessie's reaction. I guess I should look for it. I wonder if they should have just written Philip out for a while and cast Bolger as Simon. That would have been a year earlier but they could have made it work (was it Long who created Simon or was that all Ryder?). He could have feuded with Lujack. Bolger would have been believable as Simon - a con artist, one with a heart, and probably some added bisexual sleaze appeal.
  14. So did I, although Eric was always a dullard and a patsy, so I guess it fits.
  15. I love Jane and I know we both know she can play layers, but I tend to agree with you. Susan was enthralling as Stephanie in those years. I think Chris Schemering called her a Sphinx. That was one of the reasons I was put off by all the hamming from Susan in her last years. I think it's just easier to blame the Stone/Robin story, but the atmosphere of the entire canvas was heavy. I remember Marlene Delacroix saying the only light relief on the show rested on Lynn Herring's well-toned shoulders. It's unfortunate that the show, and the industry, likely learned the wrong lessons from that period.
  16. I believe he was fired. I first saw him on Y&R, so I never knew of him on AMC. I once loved his work on Y&R - a long time ago, sadly. As I went through some of '80s AMC I was surprised at just how much the show seemed to lose their interest in Cliff and how many times Cliff left the show. That made me less surprised at his being let go.
  17. Someone else will know more than I do but I think those are extras (the guy on horseback saying this sure beats wherever in Alaska they came from may have been on before, I don't know - I have never brought myself to watch that whole story introducing them where Kyle had sex with Roxie when she had amnesia). He did look stunning there - I'm sure today someone would say he "outmogged" the groom (although the people saying that don't watch soaps). Bolger is one of the most gorgeous men on GL, or any soap. I'm not surprised he never really caught on as Philip the way Grant did, but you never get bored watching him. Soapcentral's bio claimed that Jessie and Simon had a son offcamera (named after her father?) and that Lillian would mention visiting Calla, but those bios often had some fancruft. I never heard any mention of them, even though it would have made sense to bring back Jessie later on (Beth likely would have ended up screwing her man). Calla is a flop of a character, remembered only for a VD shame story, and was likely just brought on because Lisby Larson was a big name on Texas, the previous Kobe/Long soap. I can't remember if I showed you this before (if I did my apologies) but it is one of my "favorite" Jessie scenes - Simon decides to woo her with a puppet. Guiding Light - Jessie has a date with a puppet (1986)
  18. One of the problems with Bell's B&B re-use was casting and a rushed nature. Outside of Brooke, the Logans did not have the presence or interest of the early Fosters and Brooks. Immediately starting the show with a sexual assault storyline was a bit desperate. The strongest material was Stephanie and her mind games. You could say that was just Vanessa Prentiss and her sons Lance and Lucas all over again, but it didn't feel like a retread.
  19. That's very true. Just don't ask Liz to give any organ donations.
  20. I still wonder if any wedding for a couple who had so little impact and a story that fell so flat has ever cost this much. Stunning visuals and gorgeous wardrobe in many cases. I often think of these clips whenever I think of a GL wedding (and the couple aren't even in many of them!), but I wish they could have used that cash for a better purpose. The fun entrance for Louie also reminds me that a character who often seemed to be there for light relief got a depressing side exit. I guess at least he got an exit. 21. Dante/Sam deja vu, hopefully with a different outcome.
  22. Thanks. Irna must have been run ragged doing both shows those few years...
  23. Thanks. It feels appropriate that the show ended on Christmas. (was this still Irna?) If I ever find any of my old scans again of magazine picture stories from these years (I think there may have been one or two) I will add it in one of these threads.
  24. Thanks so much for continuing these @Reverend Ruthledge . This was the end of the radio run, right? Or did it go into 1957?
