Guiding Light Discussion Thread
He was the piano guy who was ill. He originally showed up obsessed with his ex (?), the ballerina Bob dated. Dee began working for him, and they fell in love, I guess. I'm not sure if he was always meant to die but when the Dobsons took over, he died after having sex with Dee, which traumatized her. I just thought NSA was too matronly and surface-level to play Michelle.

I think that Monty and Riche (up to around 1996 or so) knew how to use an hour format...and Curlee too...Marland was also born for the hour format. Unfortunately, so many aren't. I know it sounds silly to complain about this with GH as it probably implies I think they could go back to a half-hour, which isn't going to happen. So ideally, they can find someone who can punch up an hour format.

I wish I could see his Search work. The story he had on ATWT I found extremely tedious, especially when the Dobsons arrived, but that was typical of much of the show. I enjoyed him as Ed and I liked that he was never afraid to play Ed unsympathetically, but seeing Mart made me understand why a number of fans never accepted him. Mart just had such warmth. I wonder if P&G ever considered hiring Jacquie Schultz as Hope.

NSA was lucky to have the job as long as she did - just beyond bland. I am glad Wheeler didn't do what Goutman and others did and say I'm going to tell all the stories I was going to tell, now at breakneck speed, it's all about me. She was smart to not bother bringing in a recast Michelle for only a few months. And I was glad to see Paul Anthony Stewart one last time.

I think soaps were best when they had smaller casts (and also were not an hour).

Thanks. I wonder if they had any more plans for him. I wish some of that time would pop up.

I suppose if you are generous you could say they had already set up Philip having a past of mental breakdowns, but that may be too generous. At this time they claimed that Alan had kept him hidden away and set up a fake replica Spaulding office for him to work in. (IIRC, they had filmed this scene before Grant left). They arrogantly tried to hire Grant back soon after firing him and he declined until late 2008. When he returned, one of the first things he did was push a man off a cliff. This was an insane choice for a return scene, but viewers despised the character, so they didn't care. The story was almost immediately dropped.

Thanks to @JAS0N47 an interview with Gene Peterson. I appreciate what he says about the 85-year-old devoted fan. Back then fans probably had to be sharper than ever. I know little to nothing about this character. @slick jones You and IMDB have Gene listed as airing in 1958. This is from Duluth News Tribune 2/8/59. I'm not sure if that would mean he was still on the show in 1959 or not but thought you'd want to know.

Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
I thought Patsy's first Emmerdale stint was good, even if they just kept throwing her into beds as the writing for the Kings wandered everywhere. Unfortunately, after her EE stint a few years ago, where she could not move her face, I struggle to look forward to her coming back.

DAYS: Behind the Scenes, Articles/Photos
Thanks so much @JAS0N47 if you don't post those articles in the LOL and Brighter Day threads, could I? Do you know when that Peterson article is from? He's mainly listed as being on LOL in 1958. They give him more of a billing in the article than I thought he had on the show. I like what he said about the 85 year old fan knowing more than the director. Soap fans, especially back then, had to be sharp. Davis & Davies would have been a great team for a bill.

@Chris B do you remember the date? For some reason I thought some fans said those weren't run by Retro in the hour format.

Knots Landing
Even though presumably someone does all this for her, it also sounds like her voice, unlike, say, anything involving William Shatner. Or Kevin Sorbo winding down his "career" telling people how safe NYC was in the mid '70s.

The biggest difference is that the actors who had made the Brooks and Foster families popular had all left or were leaving. I think there was a push from P&G to clear out or whittle down the core families, and Kobe seemed determined to make her own stamp...stamping until nothing was left. It's a sign of how messy GL was compared to ATWT in the same timeframe that no effort was made to rebuild the Bauers after Kobe left, unless you count Johnny and his family.

Donna also posted some photos with Tonya Crowe. Tonya looks wonderful - still so much like she did as Olivia, but naturally older instead of having her face hacked up.

I think it's probably just time to write Maxie out. This story should have been big for her and the chance is gone. And she's back with Spinelli again, which limits her stories.
