  1. You can feel all the emotion with Todd McKee in that last scene, as there's no reason for Ted to be so emotional. I wonder if he would have stayed if they'd done anything with the character. I'm glad they at least brought the character back for the final year.
  2. They should just say it's the same character. Whoring around should be as encouraged for gay men on B&B as it is for anyone else.
  3. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2026/jan/11/derek-martin-who-played-charlie-slater-in-eastenders-dies-aged-92 Derek Martin had a long career in TV - many may remember him for the hair-raising stunts he was involved in in early '70s Doctor Who, or his role on Only Fools and Horses, or his lead role in the Law & Order series which scandalized the country in the late '70s. For me, he will always me Charlie Slater, the patriarch of the Slater family. Charlie was a deceptively simple role, but he had to play a man who loved his daughters yet was deeply unaware of what was going on with them, a man who could be comic relief but was also deadly serious, a teddy bear who could give a severe beatdown. I remember the scene where his disgusting brother Harry tried to shake his hand as he was leaving Walford, and Charlie spit in his face. A very raw, unflinching moment in a land of fake slaps and punches. There was something special about the OG Slaters, something that has never been recaptured in the many cobbled together versions we've had since 2006. And Derek was the core of what made them special. There was something pure about him which couldn't be replaced. His relationship with Kat was devastating, moving, and had an honesty I miss on soaps.
  4. I wish they would do what Knots Landing did with Valene and Ben and have the guy be very naturally funny, caring and warm, drawing a line under her past love interests (without demeaning those relationships). For some reason the show has decided to give this type of relationship to Molly in how Cody is written with her, but still, they could try with Laura.
  5. I zoned most of that out too, oddly. I think because I was struggling to care around that point.
  6. That era is where I first saw Fletcher. In his white jacket, pining over Chelsea. Jay Hammer always did pining and the everyday moments and a bit of humor so well, I couldn't help liking Fletcher, even if his sanctimony annoyed me.
  7. I thought it was OK - my main complaint was they were too vague. We needed at least one or two solid moments. I'm still enjoying individual scenes, relationships, performances. Once that stops I will go back to not watching, as I often have.
  8. Thanks. I have vague memories of that mess. Feels even sillier when the awards were only televised for another year or two.
  9. I think Megan McTavish and Pam Long also denied this.
  10. Neither did I. From the comments, it was later published in full by Pomegranate Press. I looked it up and there's a 1996 release titled Dark Shadows Comic Strip Book.

  12. I never knew she was with Monti Sharp. I would say they should have tested them on the show but we see what happened with Alan-Michael and Gilly. I think Frank being a likeable background presence with the other Coopers and various characters helped too. I always imagined he never really asked for salary increases or other demands, was willing to take cuts, and was a company man. Other than Melina the only woman he had chemistry with was Sherry Stringfield. I think the real surprise was his lasting to get to the Eleni pairing as nothing they threw at him up to that point seemed to gel.
  13. He wasn't really much of a character. He was mostly comic relief and then sometimes had dramatic stories due to his family dramas. I did like him, and I liked that he was gay without angst over being gay. He was easy on the eyes too. He never had much of a chance as Aaron was always the "head gay." He shouldn't have been killed off. They brought in that Lewis character all these years later to replace him in Ross' life.
  14. It wasn't entirely out of nowhere with Anthony, as he was somewhat shady in his run as a regular character, but the execution was terrible and there really wasn't a need to kill him. I've been OK with Wadey's run so far but there are some big exceptions - the Zoe return story and just how bad the pacing is.
  15. The only reason I knew is because Ross and Philip were sometimes involved. I had the same reaction about Sam. I really liked Sam (it helped that I was a kid at the time - I think she's a character a younger viewer was more inclined to like) and I just had no idea where she went. I think someone here once said she went off to law school. I don't know. Looking back, Julie replaced her. As a sweetheart, I think Sam fit the role better...but I enjoyed her bitch arc, which I don't think Suzy Cote could have played as well.
  16. This is the first character to return where we saw a body, which is usually a no-go for British soaps. Kim Tate was killed off in early 1997, via a car accident or something along those lines. No body was shown. When they asked Claire King several months later if she wanted to return, she agreed, and viewers found out that there was a Kim lookalike who died, and the real Kim returned to confront Frank Tate, who was responsible for much of her "death." In 2015 there was a very pathetic stunt involving Ross Barton, where his brother Pete "killed" him during a brawl, buried him in leaves, and left him. Mike Parr recorded a farewell message, and we were all meant to believe he was dead. Very few believed this, and they were proven right when Ross returned weeks later, with vengeance in mind.
  17. @vetsoapfan Thanks for replying and being so kind as always. THE EDGE OF NIGHT - DECEMBER 14 1984 Still nothing with Laurie Ann and her parents, although there's a moment with Laurie and Marcia Cross which is surprisingly moving (Marcia never got to play those types of emotional moments in her later work). @dc11786 @YTG Tom Urich pops up in this episode. The uploader also mentioned this: One of our loyal viewers asked if Edge struck their sets (show biz term for dismantling) before they taped their final show. I went right to the source this afternoon and asked Sharon. Here is her exact quote as it was being relayed to me.-------Nothing was dismantled until the last show was taped. After the final show, P&G reps were there, all the production staff was out on the set and we had a sort of “good-bye” time. That was when I asked Joe the prop guy to get me a ladder and climbed up in front of the Whitney Living Room fireplace and took down the Raven Portrait and walked out with it kind of tucked under my jacket and said “GOODBYE EVERYONE!!” The whole place laughed and I saw Nick Nicholson beaming like - YES that is YOURS. The crew was striking props like they normally would after a show, but no sets were torn down then while I was there.
  18. Thanks @janea4old A shame the movie isn't getting much awards interest. 19. This sums up one of the reasons I began to lose interest in the show at this time. Nick was such a sanctimonious ass and was always in the right, while Alan-Michael was always in the wrong. And they just put Alan-Michael into an ill-defined weasel/hapless role for years, which worked less and less. They were at a complete loss with him by 1994.
  20. @vetsoapfan We're in the home stretch. This is Laurie Ann's first appearance (mostly in bed). THE EDGE OF NIGHT - DECEMBER 13 1984 Very jarring to go from the beautiful old school soap music to the techno version of the theme. The whole episode has many different music styles, which probably shows how unsure the show was of its direction by the end. Karrie Emerson is lovely (as is Michael Conforti - I didn't even realize he was the one who played her last boyfriend as I just associated him with the GL writers in their closing credits), but she doesn't bring most of what Lori Laughlin did to the part of Jody. She seems more like someone who would have lost parts to Phoebe Cates in '80s teen comedies. Or someone who would have been on romance novel covers. The female roles seem more conservative than where they were 5 years earlier. Part is down to this being Reagan era, I suppose, but maybe it was also Lee Sheldon. I know Chris Egan was more upfront about her sexuality, similar to Deborah years earlier, or Raven, but by this point she's barely on. You have the chaste Beth, you have Jody guilt-ridden over feeling desire for another man, you wife and mom Raven, you have Liz as the former mental patient who horrifies Beth by sleeping with a taken man... I didn't know Judith Barcroft had this much to do on the show. Other than briefly temping as Viki on OLTL this must be her last major acting role.
  21. @alwaysAMC Thanks again for your recap. The twists and turns for that time feel like yesterday and yet like a century ago. One thing I do remember well is the scene with Vanessa tempted to have plastic surgery. I still think that was a spite moment from Rauch, as Maeve Kinkead was one of the most beautiful women ever on GL. I'm so glad Maeve never butchered her face. I also have a specific memory of the story with India selling her jewelry and Ross buying it, as it's a ripoff of Madame de... Anyway, Mary Kay Adams was perfectly suited for that type of material, that melancholy, the touching sadness. I don't want to give anything away, but Holly's story will definitely end with a bang. You can see how much is wrapping up as 1998 ends. 1999 changed the show forever - for better or worse.
  22. I think there may be a list for ATWT in the canceled soaps thread. The wonderful Loving blog has a list. Preemptions List – Loving (1983-1995) Another World: ANOTHER WORLD: DATES Texas: ANOTHER WORLD: TEXAS Somerset: http://www.anotherworldhomepage.com/spinoffs.html
  23. It's a shame as Michelle desperately needed a recast (and should have been recast around 2002 or 2003), and Beth Ann Bonner was a more than decent actress when she was on OLTL. The only positive is that we got a last few glimpses of lovely and talented Paul Anthony Stewart. If they'd brought a recast Michelle back there's no way they would have kept her with Danny (understandably so) I'm still surprised they didn't bring Marah back sooner than they did, especially after Tammy. The choice to have Kimberly Brown return for a few episodes was even stranger...I can't imagine her hooking up with Jeffrey. (I don't really want to imagine anyone hooking up with him) Speaking of PAS, here's another chronicle in GL having no budget by the end of the run - he called wardrobe and they told him they had nothing, so he just went out and bought his own clothes. Paul Anthony Stewert & Nancy St.Alban For as depleted as the Bauers were by the last...decades, I am glad there was one final Bauer Barbecue.
  24. Thanks @janea4old I can always count on you. Doesn't sound like much but at least it helped pay for her health insurance.
