I believe he said words to that effect in defending himself, yes.  IIRC, he had no problem with portraying a gay man (again, some of his best friends...) but he felt it was OOC for Adam to sleep with Rafe, since Adam never had given any indication before that he even was bisexual, let alone homosexual.

Ironically, though, he was right: it was OOC for Adam to have sex with another man.  Adam never leaned that way, so to speak.  But Chris Engen, IMO, should have left at that without mentioning knowing gay people IRL.  To me, that's like trotting out your friendships with Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey to prove you're not a racist pig.

I don't believe Adam having sex with Rafe was OOC simply because it wasn't for fun or because he was interested in him. It was a means to an end. I don't think Adam is gay or bi but just a sociopath. Or at least he was under that writing regime. He used whatever means to get what he needed done.

 

Another gross one. On Days - Kristen DiMera having a miscarriage and hypnotising John into sleeping with her almost the next day (side note: Kristen threatened the doctor to keep the miscarriage a secret and planned to get pregnant again as soon as she could, the doctor played along but screwed her over by lying to John that they couldn't have sex for the remainder of the pregnancy) John calls out Marlena's name during sex and she keeps on going.

Speaking of Nicole, I find it pretty gross how Victor, Sami and others throw Nicole's past as a porn star in her face considering her father pushed her into porn.

I just remember one. On GL, Annie was about 7 or 8 months pregnant when her baby died. Instead of inducing labor, she walked around for a couple months with the dead fetus inside her all the while plotting to make it seem like Reva caused the death. Of course, eventually she developed an infection and became infertile. It always grossed me out that Annie had deliberately keep a dead fetus inside her body for such a long time.

She then excused herself and ate the sandwiches from her purse up in her bedroom. She was saying how good they were, then she started having stomach pain and fell into her makeup table. She was rushed to the hospital. The doctor told them the only thing that was wrong with her was food poisoning and the jig was up. Victor then filed for divorce.

I also have to add the "Taylor please help me lose my virginity before we die of hypothermia" scenes with Taylor and James on B&B. Just an awful, bizarre storyline. 

 

And any time the Forrester family became obsessed with devirginizing women in their family. I remember how quickly Jessica came to town and she <gasp> stayed in her room and practiced music </gasp>, so Ridge had to make sure there were men lining up outside the door to help her become a true Forrester. Kristen had a story like that too, although at least that was supposed to be wrong and inappropriate (Stephanie hired a man to bed Kristen so Kristen wouldn't be close to her father).

I always thought the idea of Passions' Gwen turning up the music while she heard Theresa being raped sounded just disgusting, and I never even saw the scene.

 

That whole hermaphrodite or whatever that Vincent/Valerie creature was, that was half-man/half-woman, did he get raped or purposely have sex with his father and got pregnant? Talk about gross. And didn't Julian accidentally get his penis cut off and they sewed it back on upside down or am I totally making this sick [!@#$%^&*] up in my head?

 

On GL, some thought it was pretty gross at the idea of Josh having sex with the Clone Reva, as she was basically only a couple months old!

Yeah Josh and Cleva was disturbing because she went from Joie Lenz to Kim Zimmer in like 2 weeks. Josh needs to take a seat next to Chris Hansen.

I'd like to given Engen the benefit of the doubt (that entire story just SCREAMED controversy to me, anyway), because maybe he didn't want Adam to SUDDENLY "go there," when there was no indication before that he was even bisexual, let alone homosexual.

I think he made a convenient scapegoat protesting a genuinely tasteless plot twist.

Then again, what do I know? Who knows if he would have put up the same stink if Adam had chosen another woman to sleep with/flirt with/whatever to throw them off the scent?

I just have a problem with the homophobe label being bandied without any real proof that the person in question is a genuine homophobe.

The Adam story was vile and the character is a psycho, so the very last thing I am going to do is fault Engen if, in the process, he didn't want to kiss a man - for that rotgut story or for any reason. It's his right, and he shouldn't even have to defend it!
