BREAKING NEWS: Roger Howarth BACK At GH -- As Steven Lars Webber??

You know what? That does not at all seem far-fetched. You know CVE will try anything to get Heather Webber back for wacka wacka humor.

Y&R needs a massive overhaul - this is a show that actually needs good new characters and a proper focus on youth, and to stop the over reliance on Victor, Nikki, and Jack and their horrible stori

  • Whatever happens from here on out, though, we all must agree never to utter the words "This show was so much better with Josh Griffith!"

I don’t feel like Sony would hire Carlivati, especially after his recent DAYS stint, for some reason. This isn’t like Griffith where he had a close buddy in Steve Kent.

Up until a month ago Carlivati was still trying to clear the air about “misinformation” regarding how much of the current (awful) material on DAYS was from his long story.

Hasn't she been working on developing a primetime soap with Martha Byrne? With her being more involved acting on the show over the last year, I'd be willing to give this a chance. "The Bug" writing and "Chloe" directing. Let's go.

Another outside the box: Victoria Rowell. Ha! I kid. I kid. But, with the relative success of BTG, would Sony hire a black head writer to lead the show? It would be fun to watch just to see how she wrote Phyllis and Jack after former backstage drama between them.

I suppose Lauralee at least knows soaps, and can't be worse than her brothers. She could be a producer. I think it would be nice to just have someone who actually cares about and knows THIS show, not just someone looking for their next job after being on the soap merry-go-round. The show is never going to be like it was under Bill Bell but it doesn't have to be this flavorless.

I do wonder about VR. Time will tell if this is CBS/Sony getting serious about improving the show or just another round of musical chairs. I remember a couple of years ago when GH brought on Mulcahey and it looked like ABC was really investing in the show... that didn't work out but the show is actually way better now anyway. If they really want to build viewership, they should bring Drucilla back and also have VR as some sort of story consultant to build up the AA story to compete with BTG. The other shows are all working off the intertia of the audiences they had 30 years ago, but BTG has started from scratch, with many viewers who don't watch soaps or hadn't in years, so there is an untapped market out there demographically that could actually bring new, younger viewers and lapsed middle-aged viewers.

And that broke the camel's back for me and I was still mad about Heather coming back in the form of Val Bloom only to be killed off. Even if Cane HAD to come back...which he didn't...he could have been someone working at Dumas rather than snatching the whole storyline (and everything else that was attached to the retcon, but more dynamic character) from the POC...which actually outside of Diane coming back from the dead...was the only other story that had potential storyline legs.

As much as I hate back from the dead stories, I'd give the new writers a few months period to let them clean up some of the messes and bring back characters like Heather, Chance, and Damian and even go further back to those like Colleen and Hilary. But once that's done, they have to go back to normal stories.

Yeah, I think even I could suspend my disbelief to have them all back. And yes on Colleen and Hilary, too.

This is Sally Sussman's arrival-at-Y&R interview with MichaelLogan for tvinsider/tvguide:
https://www.tvinsider.com/102922/the-young-and-the-restless-new-head-writer-sally-sussman-answers-our-burning-questions/

This is Sally Sussman's exit-from-Y&R interview with JameyGiddens for DaytimeConfidential:
https://daytimeconfidential.com/2017/08/10/sally-sussman-speaks-out-on-young-and-restless-and-lesbian-love-story

Sussman's exit interview started out with Jamey referring to her having introduced Mariah/Tessa, but then she was fired shortly after Teriah kissed. She talks about that, but also speaks to her whole time at Y&R and refers to her initial interview with MichaelLogan.
"When I came into Y&R last September, I had one day's notice to start the job. I had been traveling in France with my feature documentary [Midnight Return: The Story of Billy Hayes and Turkey], and hadn't been watching the show for several years. So, I had nothing prepared and never have started a job like that before. But because of the change happening so fast, I had to jump in with both feet. While starting to write the daily shows, I came up with several stories that I pitched the network; one of which is the love story between Mariah and a new character named Tessa.
<snip>
I know a lot of fans got upset by the only interview I did while at Y&R, which was last October with Michael Logan. He had been faithfully watching the show throughout all the head writer changes and really wanted answers to the loose ends that were left by my predecessor. What he didn't know is that night I had to fly to Vancouver where my 61-year-old brother just died suddenly and unexpectedly. He was my last surviving family member and it devastated me. Thinking about future stories for Y&R was the furthest thing from my mind, so I just made up a bunch of stuff because I hadn't gotten the chance to write a long-term yet. At that point, I honestly didn't think I could make six months in the job. So I’m thrilled to have made it to one year. My film, Midnight Return, has taken off in ways I didn’t expect and I have been approached to make another documentary. That’s where my passion and creativity are now."
(She continues on to own what she wrote at Y&R and acknowledges that it's on her -- and nobody else is to blame).
_ _ _
She says in one of these interviews that she hadn't followed Y&R in many years and didn't know the show anymore when she was hired, so she was grateful to have Kay Alden as her story consultant for that.

_ _ _
What I got from all that is that Sussman respects the genre, and that she respects Logan and feels bad that she gave Logan a misleading interview. But more importantly, it speaks to how Y&R hired Sussman to begin with -- Y&R wanted to replace Pratt in a hurry and just threw her in there without a bible. Having Alden as a consultant was helpful but hiring a HW without a bible -- and more importantly "one day's notice to start the job" was not workable.
So this is an issue with the Y&R process of replacing headwriters.

It would be funny if CBS/Y&R pulled "it was all a dream" twist ala Dallas and Bobby. I guess that would lead to an exit of characters for a bit, but they could be written back in from scratch.

Would have been the perfect time with Nikki's illness for her to suddenly wake up from the horrible dream where she was going blind. She dreamed Diane was still alive and had been kidnapped (by Victor's doing), Matt had returned to terrorize Nick/Sharon only to team up with Phyllis, Nick's drug problem. There could be no retcons of Claire, Holden. She and Victor would still be in love. Cane (Billy Flynn) could then be re-introduced as Cane, but without the Dumas baggage and pursue Lily again. (Because I really enjoy them right now,)

SSM is super defensive of bad work in almost every interview she’s ever given. Girl, if you knew it was a bad situation, why did you sign up for it anyway? It’s not like she didn’t have insight into the show itself and how it was being run - her husband was a producer on it!

oh yeah I wasn't trying to defend Sussman by quoting her. The point of my post was the sloppy/hurried way the show hired her in a hurry. Even the fact that her husband was a supervising producer then, and she had Kay Alden as a consultant, was not enough to justify hiring her with one day notice. And yeah maybe she shouldn't have taken the job under those conditions.
But regardless, Y&R seems to have made this decision in a big hurry.

Good point!

That's a good point, too!

IIRC, one story Sally Sussman Morina pitched unsuccessfully to the network involved Devon being assaulted by local police at a traffic stop after an argument with Hilary. The idea was very timely, but the proposed set-up was all wrong. We're gonna go from Devon and Hilary having a typical, melodramatic soap opera argument to his being GC's answer to George Floyd? No.

I wonder, would Sony ever hire an executive without asking questions like "Where do you see yourself in 5 years?" It's all a big joke to them, just find anyone to fill these seats because the show runs on fumes from the glory days.

Actually, it'll be Sharon's alter ego, "Karen," who ends up with Matt, lol.
