At the end of the day, Frank Valentini has to decide whether he's everyone's boss or friend. He can't be both.

Exactly.

rank doesn't seem like an evil man to me just very petty. For whatever reasons there seems to be his favorites and people he loathes. It doesn't seem like there is a ton of in-between there for him.

Ding, ding, ding.

  • I don’t think she would return. She had to deal with whatever backstage issues were happening at the time that she has alluded to, KS’s fans being awful online, and then KS adding to that personally b

  • Yeah, Jen Lilley is pretty clear that her time at GH was not great. I doubt she would ever return. I really liked JL as Maxie and Theresa on Days. I'd try to grab Molly Burnett if they need Maxie ba

  • I would recast Maxie soon (with Molly Burnett or whoever) simply to send a message to Kirsten. This is not a guaranteed forever job and she has to get well. I'd welcome KS back someday, but IMO that's

Well tbf there is always something story-wise out of wack (not wacka) with Frank. Thus the label of pettiness that he wears so well.

Perhaps it was not long with Chad Duell. I admit it felt like forever and definitely at the wrong time, but that turned out well in the end. I do agree that if Chad Duell was really going to hold the show hostage for a year allegedly, Frank had the right to recast. And yeah, if Chad Duell wasn't going to do a year, then Frank would have definitely waited. Smart move.

Now if Frank would find someone better than Windsoquita for a love interest for Rory's Michael...

I thought Duell wanted more money or the same money but less appearances or something like that? I don't think it was a super amicable parting. Chad was sleep walking for years though as well.

Even with RG being a fabulous recast, I don't know if the show knows what to do with Michael. I thought dark Michael was a good idea, but the show isn't exactly going all in on it or don't want to take him too far into grey territory.

I didn't know that, but it wouldn't shock me.

They're going darker with Michael but I agree they haven't done enough, or allowed themselves to commit to what should be happening here in terms of airtime and focus. Part of that begins with casting a major new lead for Gibson and letting him be an A-player, as opposed to waffling in a sort of limbo area as they currently do.

They seem to know that Michael, BLQ, Willow and so on (even Lulu sometimes lately, and she should def be up there) should be the lead tier of story. A lot of action is around those machinations. But they struggle with fully letting that transition happen, in large part due to FV's taping merry go round and penny-pinching, but also their considerations re: Carly, Jason and Sonny (whose roles have considerably receded but who still have a certain position) and certain FV/writer faves like Valentin, Britt, etc. And they're definitely not prepared to let Gio, Emma or Trina lead story as they should be doing either, because that would give less real estate to others. The most they allow for in that age tier is another failing FV fave, Joss.

Yes, Michael still has complex feelings for Willow beyond just hate but that should not be his only going contract concern. They should be investing in a major new romance there and new drama, and they're not. They're not ready for the show to truly change because IMO FV is worried about upsetting the balance of his audience, as well as about leaving less room for his own faves.

What's interesting is to contrast this side of him against the many people at both shows who have said Frank casually, easily iced them out or otherwise screwed them over lol. But we all are more than one kind of human.

True - and Lord knows everyone here has seen more than one side of me over the years, too, lol.

But the fact that the contrast between the Frank who gives KS chance after undeserved chance and the Frank who froze out Susan Haskell at OLTL, for example, after likely selling her a bill of story goods is so stark...it kinda proves my earlier point. Just about every EP in soap history has had their favorites, but Frank seems to make it personal, and that's just f'ed up. (The armchair psychologist wonders if such behavior is rooted in his childhood or adolescence, like maybe he grew up so introverted that it's hard for him to separate professional from personal relationships. Again, really f'ed up, lol).

OTOH, anyone who remembers the story of what he did for John Ingle's dying wish of one more day of work at GH in 2012, and what that day entailed (detailed at length by Ingle's daughter at the time), or the many loving tributes he's given not just Jackie Zeman or Sonya Eddy but even long-lost supporting players like Peter Hansen or Susan Brown, knows those extremes coexist in one man. The same man who also never forgave Kim Zimmer for telling a minor anecdote about dressing rooms a decade ago lol. It's complicated!

I can't recall the details anymore, but rumor was Chad got some lowball offer and could take it or walk and thought he could force FV's hand and they said see ya instead.

I wonder if Frank has a bleeding heart for those suffering or not well and thinks these type of people need him? Doesn't really explain his obsession with Howarth or Easton though lol. I don't know enough about the man to say because like @Vee I have never met Frank lol.

Frank is great at a lot of things, but he's also his own worst enemy. Tanking JJ's return, squandering Lulu, pairing Michael with a dayplayer, wasting Liz, burying Trina in nothing stories and giving Sonny the oddest "romance" with a DA fembot, etc. etc. etc. seem to be more out of spite and tunnel vision than actually wanting the show to be good day to day.

All I can say re: Howarth is that Roger left OLTL in a lasting fashion mere weeks after Frank started as EP in 2003 and jumped directly to the competition on CBS. This probably had nothing to do with FV personally but was likely at least in part due to Michael Malone's return as HW. Howarth, one of OLTL's biggest modern stars, was then gone for eight years.

I don't think FV ever really got over that and was determined to retain RH from then on in 2011. Including at GH.
