GH: Leslie Charleson as Monica.

A great choice.

Was Hillary B. Smith quickly accepted by ATWT fans when she succeeded Margaret Colin as Margo? Or was there backlash?

I'd be curious to know that too - I imagine there had to be some backlash (even Meg Ryan, who was huge in story very quickly in her run, said in an article at the time that she got a negative response initially due to how well-liked Suzanne Davidson was), but she seemed to settle in. I'd say the same with Gregg Marx but he had a buffer in poor Jason Kincaid.

Yep, and quickly let go after that. Bradley Bell style.

I was just thinking @DRW50 , since we were talking about Elaine Princi in the OLTL topic last week... Was she quickly accepted as Dorian back in the day?

There was a three-year gap between Robin and Elaine, which probably helped. She seemed to be accepted, even if Dorian didn't really hit her stride until Gottlieb arrived. Then she was well-placed enough that viewers struggled to accept Strasser back in the role.

Speaking of Gh's Michael, wasn't Chad Duell pretty much universally accepted right away? I know people were sad about Garrett getting canned, but CD stepped into heavy material right off the bat and did well and was praised. Obviously, things went downhill lol.

On the Days side of things RKK as Bo and I suppose you can count Drake as Roman 2 even if that was retconned back.

I remember some support for Drew that went on for a while but you're right, Chad did get a positive response.

And RKK is a good choice. I guess it helped that even though Peter's Bo had started the love story with Carly, he was still identified with Hope.

I recall that Hillary Bailey Smith was considered a successful recast as Margo on ATWT pretty much immediately.

I think Carmen Duncan was pretty well accepted as Iris on AW. The fact viewers knew Beverlee was not returning and Iris was such a dynamic character helped. Also the time b/w the two actresses helped and Carmen was a good actress also.

Yeah, I personally liked Drew and I know others did as well. To me it was more of a mystery as to why he was fired rather than Chad being bad. And at least the soap press seemed to pump Duell up from the start.

I absolutely hated Carly in general, but I thought Reckell did a good job selling the romance. It got convoluted so early on and by the end Crystal seemed to just sell her scenes with Lawrence/MS for obvious reasons. RKK's Bo was of course fabulous with Billie, I also thought he did really well interacting with his family.

Great choice. I adore her as Iris.

Carmen is a good choice.

We won't ever get to see for ourselves, but Susan Sullivan (Lenore) and Beverly Penberthy (Pat) may be two others.

I often wonder how long it took fans to accept Victoria Wyndham, as her Rachel seemed viperous for a time.

I never can remember how long RKK was on before Bille started - I guess a year or two.

As you said, Roman (he may be the definitive popular soap recast), and now that I think of it, Kayla too. Kim was the one where no recast ever seemed to stick.

Sometimes I think that not only is Budig not appropriate choice for Taylor age and vibe (more like a Bridget or a Katie if you ask me) wise... part of me can't accept her, because Krista Allen left a big mark. That woman just clicked right in... and I didn't see it coming. And that was a ROLE that was nearly impossible to recast. Hunter Tylo was universally known as Taylor. But then she stepped in and it just worked. She could make gold out of straw (dialogue) and gave Taylor this feeling of authenticity, sarcasm and wit... that was lacking in the late Hunter Tylo days (Tylo was only given unhinged material by that time... which was embarrassing). So a part of me will always reject Budig, because I'm still not recovered after getting our second Taylor snatched out like that. It's not fair to her (Budig)... but I can't change how I feel.

Understandable. It's only now with this Deacon storyline that Rebecca is coming across as a Taylor. And even THAT storyline started (and stopped) when Krista was in the role. But as I've mentioned, it was just one of those times where B&B did everything right with how you introduce a recast so I can't believe Brad had to be spiteful allegedly.

Bo went missing during the Raffi Torres story and popped up as RKK. I believe Rinna started in the same year (1992) but they didn't share story for a year or so.

I was going to mention MBE as Kayla, but I wasn't sure the first Kayla was popular enough.

With Kim, I think Patsy Pease's issues made recasting more an emergency situation than truly taking time to find an acceptable Kim. I did like Ariana Munker as Kim though.

Erika Slezak as Viki. A bad recast (Joanne Dorian) following Gillian Spencer probably had viewers on side with the new Viki and Erika of course made the role her own.

Chris Robinson as Rick on GH.

On Y&R, although David Hasselhoff was a 'different' Snapper audience acceptance seemed positive.

Whereas I think audiences never really warmed to Victoria Mallory in the way they did Janice Lynde, but accepted her nonetheless.

I never knew how popular Catherine Mary Stewart was either (I guess at least Josh Taylor mentioned her in some of the anniversary stuff from 1995...).

That makes sense about Kim. Anne Howard seemed to be in and out but never truly had the part.

Hasselhoff did seem to get support fast (and didn't take long to start getting primetime work). He fit the direction Y&R was taking. Mallory had screen presence and seemed likeable, but probably never enough to truly stand out as other ladies on the show passed her by.
