The Dante part had me actually laughing.

I will admit while I soured on the character during his relationship with SJB’s Carly, Maurice was still doing intense work and was very attractive to watch smolder onscreen. And taking generous viewing breaks helped during JFP’s era. But the show kind of evolved everyone around him, and left him in the dust. Carly and Jason both grew as people during the late 2000’s, and Sonny has honestly regressed, then just got old. They want to keep him the same, but it doesn’t work anymore for the show or even for Mo.

It does feel like Sonny is very stuck.  No viable love interest and no basic purpose.  It's like the character after all the years shouldn't be stuck with some day player.  Hate Mo all you want.  I get it, but Sonny shouldn't be holding birthdays for his toddler at this point.

A lot of us were worried.

It should be a given that Sonny wouldn't be there, but we know this show -- so we've been holding our breath.

It's crazy, but this feels like a gift.

It’s sad that something so logical has to feel like a gift because we can’t trust these writers and their hard on for Sonny.

Just like the 'gift' of Nathan...hoping those rumors about who he is stay just that. Rumors.

I saw someone speculating that he was Peter August, which would probably be even worse (and makes me glad Maxie isn't on at the moment).

That's the main one that makes me twitch. God, no.

On the one hand, the character is NOT needed. A hated character at that. On the other hand, RP trying to play someone else...I don't think he has the acting muscle for that.

I can think of one thing they haven't tried for Sonny: demoting him to a supporting character. Seriously, one of the reasons we're all so sick of him is that MB has a contract that demands he's on the screen nearly 3 days a week, whether they have any meaningful story for Sonny or not. And they used up all the viable stories for Sonny years ago. I think we'd all be able to tolerate him so much better if they moved him into the role as talk-to "Grandpa Sonny" and had him on once a week, tops.

To be fair, there was a period where Sonny was basically Nina's purse holder after Nixon Falls and they were together where we didn't see him much at all but as background and the occasional scene with Dante. So he has been supporting. So that too is a story that has been used and used up.

I guess the show can't afford to spring for clips that include Alan.

Honestly, even though I loved the fact they were honoring Monica, I thought the clips they used for today's memorial were a little underwhelming, not really highlighting the aspects viewers most loved about the character, like her tart wit and her steely resolve. But I guess that's in keeping with most real-life memorials, which tend to flatten out even the most complex individuals with bland platitudes like "she loved her family so much."

Lois' moments with Brook Lynn were tender without feeling false - the estrangement between them still there. Amanda Setton does some of her best work with Rena Sofer.

I never would have thought that Monica's memorial would be some of the best material for Lucy in years. Lynn Herring is so wonderful when she gets the chance. Few manage to blend comedy, drama, and breathless sincerity the way she can.

I get what you are saying, but to me, they have demoted him. Sonny is a shell of a character. They clearly don’t know what to do with him. Going out by dying in a blaze of glory or reunited with Brenda for a happier ending, both require Maurice being ready to go. Even in the fight over his piers, he is marginalized because they are barely telling that story. Nothing else revolves around him anymore, including Carly, Jason, and Michael.

A story where he had a breakdown, and actually went through medical intervention, possibly being institutionalized and started therapy won’t happen because Maurice send himself into distress every time they start a story like this.

My idea for a long time is he finally gets caught at something, and goes to jail. He meets basically a younger version of him there and when they get out (it’s still a soap, something will get them out early), this kid who he has grown loyal to does to him what Sonny did to his mentors, Frank Smith and Scully, by taking a power grab for his territory. It would need to be paced out, possibly two years to get to the climax. And even if Sonny survived, he would have to confront that he cannot maintain his control over PC anymore. But would the show or Maurice be willing to play that Sonny is older and resembles the men he killed now.

I agree.  Sonny is a supporting player that does appear more often than most.  What has Sonny done in years that's been his story?  Nixon Falls?  Nina?   The Ava meds story was halted due to Mo's insistence and PM leaving. Sonny basically reacts to other people's issues these days.

I love your idea about Sonny going to jail or getting pushed out of the mob.   Of course, my ideal endgame is Brenda, but with that currently off the table I would enjoy that story.
