Thank for alerting me to that.

I just remembered some more lost soap media.

I would like to see more episodes of the Canadian soap Riverdale emerge, especially from 1997.

I would love to see the behind-the-scenes videos from SoapCity.com again. Almost 25 years ago that website posted the most remarkable BTS footage of DOOL, GL, and ATWT. I wish I had saved those quicktime videos. They were fascinating!

It would definitely be interesting to know what dates are lost. I feel like we’ve seen a few flashbacks on the show from that era over the years. I would assume September 1966-September 1967, as September is the official start of a television season. Or is it all of 1966 or 1967? I feel like they’ve used flashbacks from 1966 before and if I am not mistaken they’ve also shown a clip from Mickey and Laura’s wedding at the end of 1967. @JAS0N47 would you have an info on this?

Well, I personally have episodes from 1966 & I am aware of others who do also. The first wedding on the show is an episode I have. I'm not sure why it is so but those of us who collect these tend to have about 2 dozen 1965 & then a gap of course but then another 2 dozen in 1966, although they are in March, not September. And, these personal collection episodes are entirely tangential to this discussion, so that will be all I'll add.

I don't have any info on the specific dates. I had thought they had the entire series until that mention of some being lost. I know the photos of Mickey/Laura's wedding, but don't know a way of checking if they aired flashbacks to it.

These are the three episodes from 1981-2019 with a Laura flashback, excluding the Jaime Lyn Bauer years:

Two episodes of AMC from spring/summer 1970 have been on YT for over a year, and I don't think they've ever been shared or discussed here on SON. I just posted them in the AMC thread. As I noted there, these eps are a first for AMC, as I don't think we've ever seen any 70s episodes as they originally aired on ABC (rather than from Daytime to Remember or on SoapNet).

So we've had the New Day in Eden episode, some 1970 eps of AMC brought to our attention, CBS primetime soap pilot 919 5th Avenue posted and Alan posting complete issues of CBS Soaps in Depth from 1999 - and we are still in January.

Good start to the year.

For the most part, no. The generally accepted story is that the earliest years were saved by Agnes via her production company, Creative Horizons, but the tapes were destroyed in a fire. After the show was sold to ABC, episodes were wiped, but (and this is the part that's never been confirmed, AFAIK) when plans were made to expand the show to an hour, Agnes insisted that ABC preserve the tapes, which they began to do in the months prior to the expansion.

All that's popped up over the years are several episodes from the first year (Daytime to Remember, SoapNet, Agnes's website, the recent YouTube finds), a color clip of the first 5 or so minutes of a 1971 episode, Tom and Erica's 1978 wedding (reran on SoapNet), and Tom confronting Erica over her taking birth control in 1979 (Daytime to Remember and reran on SoapNet). There are also some audio recordings from the mid-70s, including a full ep or two from 1975 centering around Mary Kennicott's murder.

I'm very curious as to what else might be out there since clips were used in the various anniversary shows and memorial episodes. The 20th anniversary show definitely has clips from the debut episode, so I wouldn't be surprised if someone has it somewhere.

    • That was my point really. These anniversary party scenes are the first ones, and now they won't be able to use them (meaning these actual scenes, as aired, with OG Ted). They can recreate them but I doubt they will spring for all the extras to come back and film and recreate everything, so it will be more like tight closed in shots of Ted with one or two other actors, or snippets of Leslie's original speech where Ted wasn't visible. It would be hard to recapture the original energy of the scenes are as they were filmed in their full context. I just think that's too bad, but maybe they will prove me wrong. I never really saw what was so off in his portrayal to warrant a recast, anyway, so that colors my perception as well.
    • Yeah, and quite honestly, are there really that many scenes that are flashback-worthy at this point in the run?
    • I know at one point they were on Hulu & i-Tunes. I just checked it on JustWatch.com & it indicates 1 season on Prime Video & on AppleTV. Have fun!
    • That era is so weird...they made a big deal out of all three of those characters and then they just..disappeared! Not that I am complaining. We talk about the bad out of character writing for Alex under JFP..but this was one example that may have led them to write her being so obsessive with Nick.  WHY would Alex accept Flock of Seagulls guy as her brother? They had her in one scene (setting up the Alan return) complain that Alan abandoned her...she blackmailed him into leaving town and she had been angry at him for helping Brandon with Lujack and also using Spaulding for that dumb dreaming death thing. Endless scenes of her with Simon, I can't believe Bev wasn't bored to death! I would also add Pam writing the scene where she lets Ms. Sally die in front of her to protect Alan and  the writing for Alex could be screwy even before JFP.
    • On this day 34 years ago the final episode of Dallas and came in at an astonishing #2 in the ratings after two straight seasons of weak ratings. Interesting Knots was #27 for that week as well:

    • Thank you for clearing that up. I wasn't watching GL regularly yet at that point, but seems to me I should have remembered the big wedding after Leslie's death (which I do remember) described in the profile. Is there a web archive of SOD summaries, or are referring to your own personal collection?
    • I was bummed that 2.0 ended because Mcpherson (headwriter) had really set up some interesting stories and we never got to find out where the stories would go once they resumed production on 'season 2'. I remembered the EP (Ginger Smith) and a lot of the stars gave a lot of credit to McPherson being able to come in on very short notice and come up with stories/plots (I think it was a very short turnaround time of a few weeks).  It was nice that she got to redeem herself after her year long Days stint was not well reviewed/liked.

    • It seems like a setup for failure to review a single episode of a soap, but Cleveland Amory was a foolish man.  His taste was so predictable, that one wondered why bother reviewing a medium he so clearly disliked. (found on Facebook retro TV group) Another case in point of his misogyny from his review of Dark Shadows (Can you imagine the magazine with the widest circulation in the country insulting its customer in this way today?)

    • They could easily be re-created, or even re-shot in different ways, especially if they were re-shooting scenes at some point, as well.
