Now that we have reached the end of the month...how would you grade soaps for their November Sweeps this year?

B

C

D

F

THE ABYSS.

For me...

GH.

A solid B.

The month started with Sam's death and ended with Lulu waking up and walking about. While uneven in the writing, there was plenty of plot to hold my interest. And the fact that I'm completely caught up...so rare with me and GH hehe...speaks for itself. Turning in Monday due to all those cliffhangers which were all great.

Y&R.

B+

Ed Scott's return lit (pun unintended

) up that show and it shows in the designs, camera angles, peoples' view, just about everything BUT the writing. We got a wedding, a car crash, and flashbacks. And NONE of it looked cheap...other than unnecessary CGI. Right now, it is hindered only by the writing which has too many misses for my taste. Very 'you are only noticed because you look pretty' vibes.

B&B.

D.

I look forward to GH and Y&R more than I look forward to this show. It's just gotten too silly even though there are good moments. I liked Will/Electra. And the start of the stalker storyline with them. I love seeing more Carter though I know why that is. But there was NOTHING really going on to sink my teeth into this November where months ago we had crazy Luna and plots rotating. Sorry.

DAYS.

Currently not watching.

So...YOU?

I only watch GH and DAYS. Both are frustrating to me, for different reasons. But, Sweeps, Nov. a grade?

GH: I've said that the hospital soap is no longer a hospital soap, it's actually VERSUS. Sonny vs Ava - This was but is no longer.  Ric vs Sonny - pretty much could rear its head any moment both are in Port Charles. Molly vs Kristina - definitely was so, then calmed down, but it's not clear that it's over in the Davis Women. Ric's daughter vs Sonny's daughter - This was but is no more. 5:48. Alexis vs what she now knows - Earlier this was Alexis versus what she doesn't know. Now, it's this. Michael vs both Willow & Drew - Definitely still in play. New, we have: Lucky vs. Cyrus. Lulu vs. what she doesn't know. James vs. Grown-ups. And so on. All these hot spots which flare up & are dealt with (or not). And, then on to the next crisis. There's no unified whole, no throughline, patched together, inelegant, surface, so I give them a B. There is no good reason they are not an A+ every time! But, they fall short, over & over.

DAYS: I should give it an F but I don't have the heart for it. On the basis of the acting talent & other kinds of talent bts of specific people, and because I thoroughly enjoyed 3 episodes in that many weeks, I give them a C- with the notation that it's a terrible grade. The show looks & is cheap, terrible lighting, awful sets & not enough of them. Favoritism has wracked this show. Leo is an albatross around the show's neck yet he is played as if he's the darling of the circuit. "Body & Soul" a soap within a soap is almost universally despised & it is an A story.

That's how I was feeling about Y&R. I almost went A- and went nope. Keep it real, Taoboi. lol.

And I admit that I like all of that. Especially being right about Diane and Jack. Billy can go sit in the corner though. lol.

If you don't mind me asking, why the grades on the foreign soaps? I am curious what they are doing right/wrong.

And that was one of her first scenes... and she's already that strong. Amazing. Brilliant.

Production value is just.... stellar on UK soaps. It's a breath of fresh air. But no one, and I mean NO ONE does promos like Hollyoaks:

Hmmm….

Y&R: For once it wasn’t a sleeps month at all lol. I’ll give it a B-, getting the minus because of going there with Billy and Sally

Days: C- Only watch sparingly depending on what’s going with each episode lol. Interested in seeing how Doug’s funeral turns out.

B&B: Z- What else is new lol?

    • For any other soap, I think I’d agree, but GH, I don’t know

    • Agreed, that there was some strange choices in the episode, especially at the end, but overall, that was some great drama that opens up the potential for so much future storyline. Kat vs. Eva having the most potential, especially over Tomas. I have mixed feelings about Martin/BC though. I thought he did pretty well in scenes with Smitty/MM, but the scenes of him confronting Leslie and of him throwing the books were bad lol she acted circles around him.  It’s similar to what Harding Lemay said about George Reinholt at AW; he could be brilliant in one scene, but then mediocre in the next.
    • I know some of y'all really like Brooke Kerr, and so I've tried to give her a shot, despite her frequent flat line readings and distracted "did I leave the front door unlocked?" facial expressions. But lord, she is so bad at playing a tough-talking badass that I was actually rooting for Brad today to spill the beans to Drew.
    • Googling does tend to ruin it.  For those of us who were teens in the late 1970s and early 1980s, you can't imagine how much fun it was to watch the show in the afternoons.  (It came on right after school.)  There weren't any "spoilers" at the time.  We would always try to anticipate how each crime and each mystery would be resolved, and we were ALWAYS wrong, because the stories are filled with so many weird twists and turns.   The head writer (Henry Slesar) and his dialogue writer (Steve Lehrman) invariably toss genuine clues directly into your face in the most unlikely ways, but then they provide a host of "red herrings" to completely confuse you and send you off on the wrong path.  Once the story reaches its conclusion, all you can think is Why didn't I figure that out weeks ago?  lol
    • Does the vault have the original scene and not the short flashback?
    • I appreciate that you are using AI with the knowledge of it's limitations. Some posters take everything it produces as fact.
    • And of course Mama Ru herself appeared on All My Children.
    • The Saturday 8pm slot usually had the lowest rating of the NBC 4 sitcom lineup for some reason. NBC let Saturday night fizzle, They used 9.30 pm to launch 227 and Amen, both of which moved to earlier in the evening but they  kept Empty Nest following GG for several seasons.  Empty Nest should have moved to 8pm with their strongest new sitcom at 9.30, anticipating that GG would eventually falter. Instead they left them there and stretching the sitcom pool too thinly on other nights. When Grand talk over at 9.30 Thurs maybe Night Court and Wings could have been used on Saturday.
    • @Maxim Great to see your mini-reviews again. There are a number of clips on Youtube of Janice's slow mental breakdown, especially as we go into January 1980. Christine Jones is just superb. She played the hell out of that role. Something which isn't referenced as much later on is how Mitch pushed Janice's doubts and mental instability for his own ends...until suddenly he didn't want to anymore (I guess he caught on with the audience and the show became wary). I don't want to post a bunch of clips, but this one has a very good confrontation between Rachel and Janice.

This has a good scene around 7 minutes in where you can see Janice struggling internally with her need to identify herself so much by the men around her, all of which helps lead to her crackup.
