Way over the top campy fast talking stuttering weird facial expression mess of acting. JPL was dreadful.

I know it's day one of Javi but I was disappointed. He seems like a Latino version clone of Leo. There are parts of his background I love but the character vibe was a thumbs down for the first day.

Agreed, she was interesting. That’s why I wish she was still sticking around.

And I’m not a fan of these short contracts and storylines, mostly because they always end up missing the most important beat of the story in favor of something else. The same thing happened with Peter Porte.

If anything, Corday needs to stop with the short contracts, and whosever writing needs to not give the character years worth of story when they only have the actor for a few months.

Well, at least Cat is a better name than NotAbigail

As much as I dislike this storyline, I still think there’s some potential for Cat and Mark. I just hope they’re used effectively, especially now that Ron is gone. Btw, where was Cat going with that early 90s hair style today?

The Eric/Holly scenes were good, but I wish this storyline was continuing, even though I understand why it had to be cut short. But with the way that Holly is sometimes, you’d expect her to still be angry at Eric and everybody. Maybe it would have better if she had not completely forgiven Eric today and still had some animosity towards him but also told him that she was on track to understanding and forgiving him, but just needed more time.

But I’m still liking how Tate/Holly/Sophia is playing out and how Holly’s actions led to all this. Sophia was given more depth today and that’s always a good thing for a new character. She actually seemed sincere with Tate and not manipulative and I like that. I can appreciate Tate being a little stupid too. He’s young, he’s supposed to be stupid lol

The Marlena scenes were good too but I also found them a little sad, since they mostly revolved around John. I wonder why they chose to do this storyline without Drake.

And, I’ll always love Chad/Julie scenes

Thanks for the warning.  This is why I read your recaps before I watch lol.  I find the scenes with Marlena talking about John super depressing.  I am not looking forward to months of hearing about what John's doing off screen.

I know the show did the same with Doug/Victor, but they weren't as focal as John and their deaths weren't so sudden and shocking.

I know.  I teared up for sure.  I also got teary when Marlena said something like John got very good news or a miracle today (I can't remember the wording) when talking to Eric.  It's difficult when you know the actor's knew about Drake's health.

I think that's ALM's natural hair.  She's worn it curly like that in other things I have seen her in.

I liked today's episode overall.

I really like Sophia and root for her.  She got more depth today, but I hate how the show goes into racist cliches.  She had weird Asian food so kids made fun of her.  Her parents are strict.  All characters of Asian descent on this show seem to have similar upbringings.

I adore Chad and Julie. It is so organic, and makes so much sense.  It is the perfect use of both actors.  I like that it distances Chad from the other Dimeras.  I like that Chad respects her in a way that Hope and Jennifer never did (not that they were bad to her, but their relationships are more complicated).  I also like that Chad doesn't just dump his kids on her, they are really friends and confidants.

The tribute to Drake was nice, but I was left wondering why it happened today?  It is not as if this episode was produced after his death.  And one imagines that they could've inserted a picture into any episode.  So, my response was mixed.

I hate when show spend too much time trying to make feel bad for new characters who did bad things. It has the opposite effect on me. I just want Cat and Mark and their so story does nothing for me. Half the episodes being about them was not necessary.

Julie and Chad were lovely. But I can already tell that Chad will forgive Cat. So dumb.

John's absence was obvious today. It made me sad.

Going back yo yesterday, JPL was awful. So OTT.

I assume because this episode had a heavy focus on John?  It would be weird to insert a picture of Drake into an episode that featured Body & Soul.  I am not judging this tribute because this is obviously just a quick one announcing his passing to the audience and there will be many on screen ones to come.

Some initial thoughts.   1) a Who's who back in the day with an assortment of well known performers. 2) Surprised Debra Messing would agree to play a conservative character 3) Not surprised a network didn't pick this up because showing a conservative that is human/likable is a no no in Hollywood LOL
    • Yes from when they went on Let’s Make a Deal too. Pam stole Forrester designs for Jackie M. Of course a month later we saw Nick, Lesley, Owen, and Bridget all exit in the same episode.
    • Great pairing that seemed to come out of the blue! Around that time, it felt like Sheffer/Goutman didn’t really know what to do with Emily or Hal. And KM and BH had surprisingly great chemistry. It was good for Emily especially because she was coming off those unsympathetic years with the Tom affair and then running the Intruder and essentially just being a busybody.
    • I think the issue with Lulu is less the character (which was the issue in the Julie Berman days under Guza II) and more the lack of nuance. The current GH team rarely writes nuance for any character or at least can't sustain it for long, or they reserve it for a favored few. I also think the rooting interest at GH BTS often remains on preferred characters or actors - BLQ/Setton - vs. Laura's kids. So it's easy to make Lulu the heavy if you think Brook Lynn and Chase are the money on this show. I don't, but I think FV does. And that's not to say I think Amanda Setton is bad in the role, or that I would get rid of BLQ. I don't trend towards either (though I do think that if Setton's personal beliefs keep getting in the way of material I would reluctantly recast). I think Brook Lynn is essential to use as a lead presently. But I don't think it needs to be the black and white dichotomy of suffering young matriarch BLQ and aggressor Lulu. While it's good that unlike in the Guza years they can recognize that Lulu can be obnoxious and rash, can be her own worst enemy and that that is part of the character, it can be toned down or given more layers than it has of late. There's nothing wrong there the writing can't fix.
    • 1999: I just watched it. It felt so primetime. La Lucci is making history. Aretha's daydreaming segment. @Contessa Donatella Thank you, my love. So helpful and informative as always. adding them to my queue.
    • I know this isn’t a usual or anywhere near universal take, but I loved the relatively brief Hal/Emily relationship/marriage more than I ever thought I would have with KMH/BH.
    • In my field (not that) I've written my share of dreck when it's what people wanted vs. something good. In the end what matters is the check. These pilots may not be great, but whether or not those writers intended otherwise they got paid.
    • I think there is plenty to critique and/or roast about the show, but I think there's also good bones and a lot of progressive improvement. It's the Bell/B&B formula and house style that is hardest for it to shake and the most necessary IMO, as well as some dead weight actors or characters, but that formula also apparently works for a lot of general viewers and I suspect CBS. OTOH it's also very modern in certain ways (sometimes overly hip dialogue, and some story) that still make it feel like a show that's bouncing between distant past staples of soap opera fundamentals and the present moment. And the old fashioned product placement is fun but also so goofy, while material like June is hysterical. Imagine leading with 'the underpass is where I live, and I like it there!' It's an unusual show in that way, because its identity and tone is still not fully formed. You don't know what it'll be. But that's normal at this juncture. The closest thing to a glimpse of the future foundation, I think (besides the obvious core family setup that's been there since Day 1), is the rivalry and future familial bond - and likely love/hate relationship - between Kat and Eva. A la many central sisters or siblings throughout soap history.
    • I loved Kelley Menighan! She was an MVP, especially during the show’s last few years. I always looked forward to anything she did with MM, BH, CZ, MW,  and the two grownup Alisons. Wasn’t a big fan of her with RH’s Paul. I always admired how she balanced being a vixen and being neurotic.
