DAYS: Will classic episodes ever be available?

Numerous fans of DAYS OF OUR LIVES on Twi/X (formerly Twitter, now x.com) have had their accounts locked recently & have received stiff warnings. A third party who is apparently acting on behalf of Sony is targeting fans who post clips, edits, or make whole episodes available in digital form. Any clips over 5 minutes long associated with their accounts are summarily deleted while their accounts are locked. When they gain access again to their accounts the clips they had posted are gone. They are warned not to begin again to post clips & if they do they may be banned permanently. This seems to be consistent covering ALL who have posted clips. Obviously this is accomplished with the assistance of x.com. It is not known whether the same copyright strikes are happening on other platforms or sites.

As the big anniversary approaches, Sony/Corday/NBC Universal is going after lots of DAYS pages on YouTube. Which sucks. But I did think what if this crackdown has something to do with classic episodes becoming available soon? Wishful thinking I’m sure.

But let’s say we got a huge wonderful surprise, like Knots Landing streaming has been. What days story or episode would you watch first?

As much as I am so curious about Susan Flannery as Laura, and the years Bill Bell was writing, that’s not my first pick. My first would be to watch the entire Salem Strangler storyline. One of my favorite soap binges during the pandemic was getting to see the Loving murders, and I would love to see all of this DAYS classic.

What would everyone else want to see?

They are going after all kinds of DAYS pages, including those on X (formerly Twitter) it appears. Lots of cease and desist letters, and threats of accounts being suspended/deleted.

Thus far, besides copyright purposes, there doesn't seem to be any official indication this is leading to a streaming deal where older episodes/clips of DAYS will be available on a platform.

I remember in the past there used to be channels and channels and channels full of playlists of DOOL episodes - everything from the 90s and 2000s was on there (youtube). And it all got deleted. So in my recollection this is not their first time doing this. They wiped out Days before... and they are doing it again. Same thing happened to AMC episodes in the past - all of them got deleted.

If I recall, Ken Corday did say something alluding to that a potential deal for classic episodes could happen on Peacock, but since nothing has come and even the special events have been removed from the platform, I doubt that will happen.

It's a shame that fan pages' videos and media are being targeted in such a strong and damaging manner.

It would definitely be nice if that’s the reason.

I hope we get something on Peacock at least. If it’s a money issue, I’m sure the return has to be just as good as the investment.

As for what period I’d want to see, there’s too many for me to pick lol so I must just start from the beginning and once again, watch awful child Julie steal the fur from the department store

She was such a brat! It's nothing short of amazing that she turned out so well. And, then, poor Marie being jilted by Tony Merrill & then, WHAT, marrying Tony's dad.

But, about the money. I fear people do not realize what a truly expensive proposition it is. These classic, vintage soaps have so many episodes. They all have to be organized, curated, then digitized. Title cards likely would have to be made. Chronological would be one thing but marketed by story would cost even more. Then, finally, all of these now "duded up" episodes would have to be placed on servers. Think. So many episodes = so many servers. The mind boggles. Not anything cheap about it.

This is it, folks, the reason we do not already have classic soaps, daytime ones, already streaming. $$$$

Ken Corday, about a decade ago, said they were already doing this with the DAYS archive. They had already started when he made the statement.

Yeah I know it’s wishful thinking. But it took so long for Knots and we finally got that. So I will hope for something cool during the 60th year beyond Ron being gone

I want the real episodes, quality controlled, not edits.

It is interesting to think how all these decades of programming are just sitting there, possibly waiting for the right time to be seen again. Or not, and just as elusive for fans of the genre as the days when they wiped tapes and it was one chance only to see.

I am utterly amazed. Corday really said that? Then? At the time that NBC had started bleeding them. WOW. That would have been some really remarkable interest in film preservation. If so, I am duly impressed. And, typically I do not give an inch when it is Corday we are speaking of. I have 2 graphics I use to represent him. One is an ostrich with its head in the sand. The other is a golfer making his backswing. If a third is required, I've got it, too, a baby grand. I do know that when it was first announced that DAYS was headed to Peacock, Beverlee McKinsey's son, Scott, a director at DAYS, said he would not be at all surprised if the classic episodes archive was included in the first year or two of being on that streaming service. I really do like your optimism. As far as I am aware, DAYS never wiped, but they did lose 1 or 2 early seasons to a warehouse fire. I believe it is Season 2, maybe 3.

(AMC & OLTL also suffered a warehouse fire causing them to lose a few. But, nothing at all like for example, all of P&G wiped till late '79/early '80, when they stopped that evil practice.)

I find that TikTok is the wild west of classic episodes.  For example, there's an Australian woman who posts 1980s clips of Days.  Currently, she's doing a theme of Bo and Mrs. Horton's relationship that is very fun to re-watch.  I hadn't recalled how many scenes they shared, including one where she tried to shear his hair!

It is all very searchable by hashtags.  Personally, I prefer clips, because I find full, unedited classic episodes to be a little dull.  It's like watching a slow, drawn out joke, when you already know the punchline.

I don't think it's helpful to post any links to videos in this thread. This thread, by its nature, would attract the AI bots that Sony uses to find these things.

To clarify, Sony employs an outside company that has algorithms that find the videos.

    • I feel like the show has been like this for the past 15 or more years, IMO. Things happen but there are never or RARELY any long-term impacts. Instead, everything (characters, history) is just reset to what it was before. In a couple of months, Hope will be working at Forrester again. No one will ever mention the takeover. Brooke and Ridge will be back together for the millionth time, etc etc.  It's hard to get invested in a story when you know this is how the show works.
    • Martin and Smitty's kids not being there seemed like a glaring omission. Also, Naomi and Jacob weren't there as well. I know some of this is probably budget, but it seems like there could be a way to still have them all there.
    • Thanks so much for finding this & posting it. This makes me so angry!!!
    • Dani had a flashback of Dani getting ready for an event with Bill. The gown she wore in the flashback was light green and elegant and gorgeous. The light green flashback dress was quite different than the red/orange/lilac swirling print beaded gown that Dani is wearing to Nicole's anniversary party.   But there was clearly the show's intention to have the Dupree women (except for Nicole) wearing shades of red.   I love Anita but the red gown that she's wearing to the anniversary party -- not flattering.
    • I think you can find them here https://www.tumblr.com/tagged/OLTL What's there is recaps from SOD at the times it shows which is usually from way back up till 2003. Most if not all of this is due to Matt Smith who you may recall from his AW playlists on YoutTube.
    • Party wardrobe color theme: Good Queen Nicole is in a solid gold gown. The other Dupree women (plus Smitty) are wearing shades of red/pink (with purple accents) -- Anita, Dani, Chelsea, Kat, in dresses. -- Smitty in white shirt and maroon jacket. (did not see Naomi?) "The help" Eva and Mona are in black. Antagonist queen Leslie/Dana in a black/gold gown. The men (except for Smitty) are wearing black. Ted - white shirt, black tie, black jacket. (Ted's jacket was shiny with back polka dots on black background) Vernon - black turtleneck, white dress shirt over it, black jacket (no tie). Andre - black T-shirt, gold chain, black jacket. Martin - black shirt, black tie, black jacket. Dr. Carlton Fitzgerald - white shirt, black tie, black jacket. (did not see Jacob?) I didn't see Naomi and Jacob at the party, but perhaps they arrive later? The evening is not over yet.

I enjoyed his scenes with Johnny. Both of their perspectives make perfect sense to me and are completely relatable. There’s no right or wrong person in this situation and I like that. LH  does pretty well when Tate is angry too, but I also liked the way that he comforted Johnny in the end. Days is finally remembering that they’re cousins. And, Johnny looked hot in the beginning   Btw, Johnny going to work for Xander? That could be interesting. And, also can cause some more animosity between him and EJ.  And again, Marlena/Belle were great. Scenes like theirs really seem to be commonplace under Paula/Jeanne and I couldn’t be happier that they are. It’s helps us get a much better understanding of these characters and why they do the things that they do and feel the way that they feel. Marlena supporting Belle was a bit of surprise, considering her insane reaction when she walked in on EJ and Belle, but I also feel that it’s totally in character for her, both as a psychiatrist and as Belle’s mother.  As for Sophia and Amy… I miss the first Sophia lol but I can’t help but think that Amy suddenly being so nice is foreshadowing of something. Either that, or Paula/Jeanne aren’t biased against her
    • @alwaysAMC Great mini-review as always.  That Gilly story is...certainly one I could not forget... I imagine a number of viewers were shocked with the temporary recast. It was revealed in the soap magazines, as was the news about Frank Beaty's breakdown, I think. I think Wolf had some statements or an interview at the time but very little. I wish someone could interview him. He did a good job under extremely tough circumstances.  For some reason I have a vague memory of him in the Marian getup but that's probably not right.  I'm glad you have appreciated the material with Susan after a shaky start. I always enjoyed her, and she was the only love interest I liked Nick with.
