I think the troubles started even earlier, when Holly Robinson Peete and Leah Remini were "dismissed" after the first season.  Neither lady set the world (or the show's ratings) on fire, but their exits were so publicly messy, with Remini and Osbourne trading insults on social media, that it set a very bad precedent for the show.

zap2it.com shows BTG listed on independent station CHCH-DT in Hamilton, Ontario.
(zap2it shows BTG on CHCH-DT but not on plain CHCH)

tvpassport.com doesn't clarify whither CHCH, CHCHDT, or both.

I'm curious if CBS has a ratings/viewership number in mind for BTG to be considered "successful" or if they are just going to let it find its footing first. I'm sure we know it will do well out of the "gates", but can it sustain itself?

I suppose if it can at least improve on numbers for The Talk, it will get a good run. My fingers are crossed for this show getting some time and not ending up a flash in the pan. The about of hype going into it is promising so far!

I would imagine a success would be if it could exceed The Talk/match GH in live ratings. It also needs to do well on Paramount Plus.

The ratings are the one thing that make me nervous because it's so hard to predict for any show. I'll have to wait and see how that cracks out before truly judging it.

They should. I don't remember hearing any issues with airings for The Talk or even As The World Turns. It was only Guiding Light and currently Let's Make a Deal that does not have solid slots that can be easily referenced. Similarly, GH.

For instance, LMAD airs either at 10:00 a.m. ET/9:00 a.m. PT or 3:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT, depending on your market. This started happening with Guiding Light in the 90s.

GH airs at 2:00 p.m. ET/1:00 p.m. PT on ABC, but except for one of the owned ABC stations, it otherwise airs in its old 3:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT slot on 7 ABC-owned stations (WABC/KABC for example).

Do we know it will be a success out the gates? I'm actually cautiously optimistic, because outside of this forum I've not heard anyone talk about it. I feel there was more buzz around Sunset Beach than BTG. Granted that was nearly 30 years ago and the soap landscape was very different. There was still a larger interest in soaps and a greater younger demo watching them.

I'm not sure what would be considered a success. I don't think just matching GH's numbers will be enough. It seems like they're putting a lot of money and effort into this and that means they're hoping that it actually works - which can be good and bad. I definitely love the effort and care being taken with this project, but it might mean that the expectations are so high that anything less than will be disappointing.

I know a few people said they don't care how the sets look, but to me that's one of the most off putting parts of soaps today. They just look cheap. If we're finally going to get a brand new soap, I don't want it to go the budget route of the ones still on.

Considering the irregular airtime for GL, the clearance on CBS stations remained really strong, so I'm hoping it won't be an issue for BTG.

As for GH, in the NYC area it's on at 3pm. I haven't followed regularly but it was moved to 2pm at one point only to be back on at 3. So it won't be direct competition with BTG in one of the country's largest markets.

    • The timing is strange, though. How far in advance would they normally be on location? The Achille Lauro hijacking was on October 7, 1985. Nancy had arrived in Egypt in the storyline by October 18. But the character of Hawk, Chris' Native American friend from Arizona, had already appeared onscreen by September and brought a letter telling Chris to be in Egypt by October 25th.  Why did they already have the link to Arizona before the reason to cancel the shoot in Egypt?  The dust and the jar it came in were from Egypt though. Nancy bought it there and sent it to Mac as a gift before she came back to the states and followed Chris to Arizona.
    • Actually that is not what happened. Nor is the timing right for it to have been. We learned from a WOST interview with Pete Lemay  in 2006, which can be found on YT, that it was Fred Silverman's idea to do the 90 minute show. I don't know how much you know about him but he had these amazing successes as head of daytime at both ABC & at CBS. Then he came to NBC where basically everything he touched turned NOT TO GOLD but to shite. Some of the most expensive shows ever produced up to that time were huge flops. Although even he, like a broken clock, could be right on occasion. However, as we know, he was not right about the 90 minute show. As a matter of fact, afterward,  NBC programmers, who worked FOR him, were asked why they did it & they were quoted as saying it was because they couldn't think of anything else to try. It was a stupid idea from a man who had reached the point where he was throwing anything at the wall to see if it would stick.

    • I stopped watching Another World in 1990. Simply, lost interest in the show.  I had watched the show from 1973 to 1990. The 90 minute show started the decline of AW.  NBC panicked with expanding AW due to the GH hoopla. As mentioned above, 1982 was a trainwreck for AW.  The introduction of the Shea family, the movie storyline involving Jamie, and Steve Frame favoring Rachel over Alice. The writers went into that direction due to the forgettable performance of Linda Borgeson.

    • Ive seen that theory thrown out but the one thing against it is that Leslie and her family lived in Chicago. She only came back to DC last year after her husband died. Unless they say Alan made a trip to DC and died while away, she wouldnt know about that. However I do think the angle of her finding out that Martin was involved could work as that gives her leverage against Bill too for covering it up. She'd want to get revenge on him by threatening to have him disbarred
    • What a good write-up @Errol! Nice seeing the nod to Duplaix's lead.
