Summary:

The story was pitched too him by Danielle Unger

  • J.Eddie Peck is sticking around as Cole Howard.  Cole will take leave from his job at Oxford and spend time in Genoa City.
  •
  • Griffith says: "Nikki has been forced to fall off the wagon by crazy people and her recovery is going to be equally spectacular."
  •
  • There's going to be a huge conflict between Victoria and Nikki and Victor because, Claire could be Victoria's child, but Claire was instrumental in pumping vodka via an IV into Victoria's mother."
  •
  • Claire will be redeemable but, Jordan will be written as "Silence of the lamb Batsh*t crazy."
  •
  •  They've got atleast a years worth of story now after these few house of horror episodes.

That interview actually makes me sad for today’s soaps. An idea generated from outside the writing team, and the HW knows nothing about any of the players involved from that time period to draw on organically.

I am enjoying the story, just makes me sad about the state of things.

I completely agree.  It's sad in many ways.  Sad that we viewers are so desperate for an identifiable storyline, that we will gush at any bone they throw us.

To be honest, it is not fundamentally a bad plot.  But the execution is awkward and too fast, making the storyline unbelievable.  Had Griffith taken it slowly and added more nuance and detail, the entire thing would seem much more plausible.  Every step along the way, we needed more explanation and exposition.

That interview was weird! I thought Devin was okay with the questions. I mean he had to go where JG led. Is he always weird in interviews? And I cannot imagine getting a year's worth of stories from something that began so gangbusters. And it is crazy that the shows still "do Sweeps" when as far as Neilsen goes, Sweeps no longer exist. But, the shows continue to time things on a Sweeps calendar & this story began at a weird time, the end of the biggest Sweeps period.

And the 2023 Award for Worst Quote by a Writer goes to Josh Griffith for, "Nobody does alcoholic like Melody!" 😆😁😄

Soaps have fallen so much that there isn't anyone willing to do the job as head-writer that could be decent.

AFAIK neither Nancy Curlee nor Patrick Mulcahey are employed.

No one the networks would be willing to hire either. The people they’d consider would be the hackiest of hacks, dutiful corporate sycophants, or nepo hires.

And Eve Howard would certainly fit that bill. “Right. I talked to Elizabeth [Le Brun], who’s our producer and does all of the tracking of the history of the show and asked who from Nikki and Victor’s past could potentially have a grudge they would want to accomplish now. And she said, ‘Well, it would be Eve Howard, but unfortunately, we saw her die on air, so that’s no good.’ I said, ‘Tell me a little more about it.’ We dug into it and I found out about the Cole connection and then there was the baby that died, and then I started thinking, ‘Ah, a baby that died.’ As I got deeper into the story, I said, ‘Well, it’s kind of interesting if it’s a sister, it’s a woman, and what if she raised this child to believe she had been abandoned by the Newmans, and she had literally spent 26 years grooming a psychopath?’ I found that fascinating. I said, ‘But she’s got to be redeemable; the child has to be redeemable. She has to have been totally manipulated, but the aunt can be as bats***t crazy as we want!’ I said, ‘I want to go all out! I want [Jordan] to be totally SilenceOfTheLambs crazy.”

The anatomy of a hack writer.

Was the story rushed? Sure no arguing that, was it good? Damn good

Honestly I think some of y'all would complain no matter what.

It's pretty accurate to say that with soap fans if you please one segment, you displease another. So, yeah, anything where you have some folk going WOW, wait 15 minutes till someone else declares it totally without merit! Fortunately it is possible to have a sense of humor about that seemingly inevitable irony.

Some of us were watching when soaps were good. So our expectations are too high for 2023.  But that's the way it is.

Josh has been working at Y&R for years and was first a headwriter in 2012.

And in 2023, he has to be told about the Eve Howard story? Unbelievable.

Maybe over COVID Josh, you could have read some old synopses??
