Agreed. I'm all for subverting viewer expectations, but Vivian has a good reason for wanting revenge on Lani, and it just would have made a lot more sense if she'd been plotting this kidnapping from the shadows and sent Ivan to execute it.

Matt Ashford was AWFUL. So over-the-top my mouth fell open. Every scene was one lined screamed after another. That’s not acting.

OTOH, I thought Linda Dano was great as Vivian, and I appreciated the Sorel touches. She’s so much better than Strasser in that role.

I was *hollering*.

I liked how Tiffany's wig was a direct tribute to our Tiffany of the '80s.

As for Linda Dano, it's still early, she's not giving us the character, but I love her all the same. I'm not mad at this revolving door casting approach to Vivian, it reminds me of Cluedo where all of those fabulous British actors had the opportunity to reinterpret the same role.

To bring Laura back as such a tool seems egregious, but what can you expect from soaps these days...

I must admit that I rather enjoy the show for what it is. I watch DOOL and B&B on the apps at night, and I find them very easy to keep up with while being entertaining and not at all sluggish like Y&R and GH.

I don't typically notice such things, but has anyone else caught how the ladies' manicure game on this show is top notch?

So far Linda has failed to capture Vivian's essence. But it's only her second episode. She's nervous and rusty. It also doesn't help that the story isn't any good.  I see poor Days is using Jarlena's set as Vivian's. Corday going to have do a GOFUNDME soon.

I think Dano was a bit better at playing Vivian in today's episode, but the character is such a product of Sorel's unique loopy energy that any recast is going to have trouble.

I normally like the show's use of camp, but today's episode was a bridge too far even for me. The Susan stuff was too over-the-top and all played at the same screeching level. And everything with Ben and Ciara and the fortune cookies was too stupid for words. If there's any character I'm rooting for in that storyline, it's her kidnapper Rhodes. Maybe Ben and Ciara can go ride off into the sunset together, and he could be our next "redemption story"; I mean, at least he's not a serial killer.

Ron is one of those writers who inexplicably gets "recognized" for his work, even though it has never been any good. He is a scribe whose continued employment on the soaps just baffles me. After decades of failure, you would think even TIIC of daytime TV would accept the fact that ludicrous, low-brow camp, sci-fi and blatant supernatural themes do not work on soaps which were created to be, and known to be, traditional. The writers who do not have the talent to incorporate character delineation, intelligent interpersonal relationships and at least plausible and recognizable situations into their shows should be purged from the pool of potential hires. Ron C, Jean P, Josh G, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, and so many others should never again have the opportunity to decimate the soap genre more than they have already done.

I hated the Susan stuff. Too much craziness, too much yelling. Eileen Davidson made Susan work, but I don’t think Stacy Haiduk can do the same.

After Ciara, do I want to see Ben with Claire? Not a chance. I still think this nuClaire is grossly miscast. The fortune cookie stuff was embarrassing.

Linda Dano seemed very unsure, which is unlike her.  It felt like she was imitating Louise, and she was doing a fine job . . . but LS's deadpan Vivian is equally funny, aloof, and crazy.  LD's portrayal just felt confused, sedated, and too elegant.  But hopefully she'll find her footing.  And anything is better than whatever Robin Strasser (who I love!) thought she was doing.  Like others have said, LS brings something so unique to the role to the point that no recast stands a fighting chance.

After the last week, I'm officially done with Kristen.  Just put a cork in it.  And I think SH can be a revelation, but she misses the mark too often here--she's either psychotic OR saccharine and has mostly lacked the nuance that this role requires, which ED perfected.  Susan was a mess and I agree with everyone that this newfound Marlena/Kristen "relationship" is not only unbelievable, it's actually very damaging to both characters and their very rich history.  And F anything to do with Cin.  I always hate psychic connections that JER was so fond of and this is especially triggering lol.  I don't even know what Ron is going for with the Necktie Killer references anymore--Susan SHOULD be freaking over being in the same room as the Necktie Killer . . . it being played for laughs doesn't help Ben, but like others have guessed, maybe Ron is just trolling now.

But other than Cin, this has been a solid af week.  The Jack/Gwen stuff is reaching, but no more than any other long lost kid story.  I personally loved the flashbacks, despite the aesthetics being very wrong lol.  I know some have complained that Laura is being thrown under the bus here, but this is the JLBLaura I've always known--totally erratic and hysterical.  I hate this interpretation of the character, but it totally tracks with her '90s era.  However, this doesn't track with the serious and capable psychiatrist Laura that Ron was going for a couple years ago.  And even though I am so not fond of JLB in this role, she did very well this week, and it was the first time she's been given meaty dramatic material in any of her returns.

I don't think Linda Dano is doing a bad job as Vivian, the biggest problem is that she comes off as too nice. She plays the subtlety of Vivian really well, but the villainous side of Vivian is lacking, which is surprising because when Felicia first debuted on AW, she was a bit of a bitch and Linda played that really well. (Then again, that was almost 40 years ago) With any luck, that'll change next week when she finds out about Jake and Kate.

Speaking of next week, we may want to get our barf bags ready for that special Ben and Ciara Valentine's Day episode lol

I do have to admit though, out of the 5 writers that you mentioned, I think that Ron is the best. I know that's not saying much lol but I think he does know how to tell a story. The problem is a lot of stuff gets too silly and too clownish under Ron's pen. I like humor on soaps, but not that campy kind that he can't get enough of.  I prefer that kind of snarky, sarcastic, deadpan humor that you get from John Aniston's Victor. He still makes me laugh sometimes.

Between DAYS and GH, I'm really starting to hate the word "changed" lol

    • That’s one of the things I’ve liked since the new writers came in; more interactions between characters that they hadn’t really had scenes with
    • Such a missed opportunity…
    • Loved Valerie Mahaffey as crazy as a box of frogs Sandy Cooper on Wings. 2025 needs to chill out already. May Ms. Mahaffey rest in peace.
    • She was great on there. And Wings. And so many shows. I don't feel like we get those character actors as much now.
    • Cady did have a southern accent as Dixie in her first few years playing the character... but it started to minimize the longer she played the character (which tracks because my aunt had a heavy southern accent when married my uncle and years living in the north has softened it quite a bit). Her initial stint playing Rosanna was partly due to mirroring the previous actress and eventually developing her own take on the character. And the thing about her take as Kelly on Y & R was that she was too sedate when she first took over playing the role (she was supposed to play a woman that had recently lost her child.. and trying to keep things together) and then went OTT crazy and didn't play it well.    And I don't care to remember her attempt at playing Jennifer on Days. I think this Pamela character is the first time she's playing a character from the start and I think she's like a kid at a candy store.  She's having so much fun trying different things... and I hope eventually she decides to settle on a more consistent character for Pamela (perhaps her love of accents is a character trait based on something traumatic that happened to her in the past maybe).
    • That's sad. I remember her mostly from ER and the shortlived, yet very funny, sitcom The Powers That Be.
    • As always loved seeing Ric with Liz. I hope the show forever keeps them in each others orbit even if it’s just platonic. I’m sure she’s going to cut him out when she finds out he’s blackmailing Alexis though. So darn.
    • I have to be honest I’m really struggling with this show. I love everything with Eva/Leslie/Ted/Nicole/Kat and enjoy Dani and Bill’s shenanigans (I’m on the Hayley needs to be recast train now tho), Chelsea is second to Kat as my favorite Dupree grandkid and I loved her coming out to her mom. The show was on a truly great run with the big Leslie and Eva reveal at Nicole and Ted’s anniversary party and the fall out has still been good even with the unnecessary Ted recast and them making Leslie kind of dumb by exposing herself too much unnecessarily. The real problem for me started when they rotated back to way too damn much screen time for Derek/Ashley/Andre (if anyone should have been up first for a recast it was these three IMO). They tried way too hard to drum up drama between Ashley and Derek and the actors were clearly fighting for their mediocre charisma less acting lives to make it work but none of it landed, just horrible. Naomi and Jacob and this weird homeless woman story are also BORING. I can see where its potentially going but IDGAF at all, my only hope for them is that they’re building a triangle with Naomi/Jacob/Kat because Jacob and Kat have stronger chemistry together than their current love interests (Eva is the only one who can make the awful Tomas work). Martin, his secret and still cringe worthy acting got kind of interesting with Bill dropping hints to Smitty but they completely lost me with that lil fakeout scene at the country club. The lame “teenagers” (air quotes because Samantha is no Bianca Lawson and never beating the black Andrea Zuckerman allegations) can get off my screen as well. Joey creeping on Vanessa is grossing me out at this point, I actually quite like Vanessa and Doug now but Joey falls totally flat as a villain and someone we’re supposed to buy Vanessa being enamored with. I’m glad they’ve finally set up something interesting for Vernon and Anita to do with this girl band reunion instead of Anita wringing her hands and telling us she feels darkness coming and Vernon giving a civil rights speech every episode but yeah… People who’ve posted with me for other shows know I’m not one for fast forwarding or hate watching either, if I find a majority of a show is not working I usually just quit but because of what this show represents for me as a Black male soap fan I really want to stick it out. Its just become a challenge lately. I saw Guza has left the building and I REALLY hope we hear about some more BTS changes. The additions of Tracy Thompson and Jamie Giddens don’t exactly inspire a lot of confidence from me tho. Honestly praying hard for a new EP to replace JHC, a lot of the stuff that annoyed about her PC and AMC runs has started to match up here. I’m giving the show through the Summer to rectify some things but IDK how long I can hold on tbh. Its been a struggle to even finish some of these episodes lately.
    • I agree. I liked the episode but it felt jarring to suddenly return to a bunch of plots that had been put on pause since the Nurses' Ball started. Although I did like Laura popping in at the end to tell Alexis that millions of dollars have suddenly disappeared from Ace's trust fund. One set of scenes that made me feel optimistic for the next few months were between Sofia Mattsson and Rory Gibson. While Rory has been good as a darker, colder Michael this week, I was worried that he might not have much range. But he really warmed up with Mattsson, and I thought that (for the first time) Michael and Sasha had some genuine chemistry.
    • Next week is going to be such a sad time... I just feel it based on what was shown today. I'm wondering if the whole John being bandaged thing being a throwback to how he first arrived on the show was a Ron C idea since it just seems as though this would be something he would come up with.  If so, it's good that Cwikly/Ford are in charge with the implementing of the idea instead of him. Just a delayed thought from the Ciara scenes earlier in the week, or last week.. and how she had an odd way of dressing/acting.  I chuckle because little Ciara did say that she admired and wanted to be just like Kristen when she grew up.  So the fact that her outfit choices are so odd/off beat and her manner is a bit OTT just fits.. especially since Eileen's Kristen had an odd sense of fashion and that frantic OTT undertone to her delivery. With that said, a part of me wonders how Eileen's Kristen would have handled the scenes being done this week in regards to John's situation.
