As a Caribbean person, Poitier was such a giant of a figure to my community. Even at 94 years of age, this is taking me awhile to process. With the hurricane and with COVID-19, thoughts would often but randomly drift to him and wonder at his health, how he was impacted by having so many family impacted by that hurricane.

Right now, I realize that there are family members who do not know this news and I don't want to tell them. Poitier was that impactful.

Man, what a loss.

How can I tell certain loved ones?

Damn.

In my mind, Mr. Poitier was one of the most dignified men ever to grace the screen.  He proved that Black actors could do more than just play the butler or the Mandingo.

Denzel and Idris and so many other actors of color owe a ton to him.  May he RIP.

Sidney Poitier! What a legend. One after another. I first became aware of him in Sneakers, of all things, but his performance in Raisin in the Sun is one of the most electrifying things I've ever seen.
