My go-to for the late James Handy is The Verdict. (I always wonder if the algorithm changes the screengrab in response to new news, or if this upload always had a prominent image of James.)

I was curious to find out what James Handy's 2-day role was on Ryan's Hope in 1977. (He's one of those familiar faces to me whose name I didn't know but saw him in different things.) The character was "Red." He was the guy in the pub in Ireland that Jack and Mary visited on their 2nd honeymoon, the one who overheard them recognize the picture on the wall of Tom Desmond.

Anthony was a very special talent. He was perfect for Giles. He played everything right. I don't think the show ever fully appreciated his talents and their phasing him out was a symbol of their decline. Yet they did give me many moments I still treasure. I remember that "lie to me" scene with Buffy and Giles like it was yesterday. I wish the spinoff Whedon had planned for Giles had gone forward.

Anything else I saw him in I appreciated - Merlin, Doctor Who (he was quite a baddie), Ted Lasso, Bridgerton.

He even managed to win the American public over, as an unknown, being saddled with a fake American accent, selling Taster's Choice coffee.

Very saddened, and surprised.

The scooby gang has lost way too much, way too fast. Buffy was the first show I ever binge watched because a friend would let me borrow her DVDs, starting when I was 12. In return, I collected the Angel DVDs and lent them to her and together the Buffyverse was complete. What a huge loss to the Buffy family. Our patriarchal figure! As an aside, I really enjoyed his daughter on Emmerdale, too.

Well put. Head was literally perfect as Giles. An actor who entertained and moved me in whatever he was given. He had a special light and he elevated any and every scene in Buffy. I believe that those with comic timing tend to be especially good actors across a range of genres because they are able to poke fun at themselves and their characters, and Anthony Head encapsulated that.

I also agree that phasing him out of Buffy was a sign of the show's decline. It became unmoored and rudderless without him.
