Rev. Jesse Jackson, a civil rights icon, dies at 84

“Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said in a statement Tuesday.

Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. devoted his life to lifting people in poverty, the marginalized, and those pushed to society’s edges. Through Operation PUSH, he pushed barriers and opened doors so Black people and other excluded communities could step into opportunity and dignity.

With the Rainbow Coalition, he cast a bold vision of an inclusive society—uniting people across race, class, and faith to build power together and expand the table of economic opportunity.

He was a gifted negotiator and a courageous bridge‑builder, serving humanity by bringing calm into tense rooms and creating pathways where none existed.

My family shares a long and meaningful history with him, rooted in a shared commitment to justice and love. As we grieve, we give thanks for a life that pushed hope into weary places.

May we honor his legacy by widening opportunity, uplifting the vulnerable, and building the Beloved Community.

I send my love and prayers to the Jackson family.

So many legends in the last few days, from Duvall to Reverend Jackson. And now the great Tom Noonan, another screen presence I thought was immortal. Wonderful in so many things, but I know him best as the Red Dragon in Michael Mann's Manhunter (adapted from Thomas Harris' Red Dragon).

Aww, that is sad, @Vee .

Tom Noonan was a terrific actor. So creepy - and yet, so compelling. He always had a way of standing out, no matter how small the role or the project. He was one actor I wish had done a brief turn as some villain on a soap, like GH. Bob Guza would've had a ball writing for him.

FYI: His brother, playwright John Ford Noonan, who won an Emmy for writing an episode of "St. Elsewhere," and who played the tow truck driver in "Adventures in Babysitting, passed away several years ago. So much talent between those two siblings, it was astounding.

Damn. Death sucks hard.

I never knew his brother wrote for St. Elsewhere.

By many accounts he was a really wonderful guy.

Michael Mann's statement via Twitter:

Terribly sad about Tom Noonan passing. In casting Manhunter I auditioned about 10-15 actors in New York when Tom walked in the door and said, “I don’t want to talk. I just want to read.” He read and it was magical. We worked closely. I based Dollarhyde less on the novel’s character and more on a convicted killer whom I met and with whom I corresponded who was doing life in Vacaville. I took Tom into that world and he made it his own. It was an automatic to cast Tom in a wheelchair as Kelso in Heat. He did so much more fine work, but it was as the battered child become a killer adult - both alive in the same bottle - that projected the range and deep soul of this so acute and committed artist. Rest in peace, Tom.

Tom directed, wrote and co-starred in this movie, which became something of a cult classic.

@dannpan That's awful. ALS seems to progress so quickly. I'm glad Eric is at peace.
