So in Today's Soap Climate...Could You?

Totally. I mention Mulcahey because he was given more leeway than most. You could always tell when he was writing, especially on a show that can feel as plot-driven as B&B. He always gave the actors rich, allusive dialogue grounded in character and history as well as current events. I remember when Quinn was flirting with Ridge, he wrote Rena Sofer this monologue about how women in our culture are punished for their sexual desires. It was appropriate for Quinn and felt very 2020 in a way that caught my ear. You don’t hear that kind of dialogue on soaps now, whereas it’s commonplace elsewhere. And someone like Patrick is facing constant interference, you know it’s a wrap.

So you all think that there could be no way to have a decent amount of push/pull. To get to write something that you want while making those 'overheads' happy?

I want to put out Dan O' Connor as an example from GH. I think by this point it is clearer what is Frank with 'the pets' and the things that Dan like (for example, he likes Obrecht and tries to write her as he can a la DAYS Stefano back in the 90s with his comings and goings)

Word.

I don't care about more Obrecht, I had enough of her years ago. The show sucks. Dan O'Connor seems like a lovely and talented guy but there's so much interference and bullshit from the EP to the network and back. What is the point of putting your name on what is mostly bad schlock in a near dead industry? Until and unless there's a better space and commitment to serialized drama off the networks I don't see what there is to discuss.

I think a huge part of why these shows are so challenging to write is that the networks have absolutely zero respect for the intelligence of their core daytime viewers.

I hate to be that guy, but maybe they are right at this point in time? The more discerning viewers grew out of the habit due to changes in the culture and technology or being driven away by the soaps’ self-destructive responses to those changes. Those folks aren’t coming back: too many buzzy “water cooler” shows to catch up on to devote 4-5 hours a week to a low-budget soap. But the audience that stuck around daytime is largely not an audience you want to be writing for.

Nuance, diversity, grappling with anything real—they’re all seen as beyond the grasp of Karen in Oklahoma. Everything is dumbed-down banality or drained of any specificities or references to things (or stuff in their show’s own history) that might require a Wikipedia search. And when they actually “try,” aside from Mulcahey or MVJ’s stuff, you get moronic drivel like GT Phyllis’s monologue about “tiramisu sex” on Y&R

    • I wonder if less set use was preparing for the move. They probably were preparing for this for awhile now
    • The early part of the season is decent. After that, Season 9 is probably one of the worst seasons until season 13. Season 10 is a little worse.    That would have made sense, even if it cost us one of my favorite scenes (Ben putting Lilliemae in a headlock). That's an excellent storyline and leads to the show's last strong season finale.
    • The TVC Studio 31 that they used for 38 years was only about 13,730 sq ft., according to the TVC website specs: https://televisioncityla.com/stages-offices/ Sunset Las Palmas Studios has 11 sound stages, which go up to 20,000 sq ft., though we're yet to learn which of those sound stages will house B&B. Depending on which one, the specs for it can be found here: https://www.sunsetstudios.com/los-angeles/las-palmas-studios/ Sound Stages 4, 5 and 9 are available for use starting September 1, 2025. It's unclear if either of those stages would be used by B&B since they begin production there starting Tuesday, August 19, 2025, which would be before the date shown on the website, but we shall see. Of those three sound stages, only Sound Stage 4 and 5 make sense since they are larger than the specs the show had at TVC, while 9 is quite smaller.  Sound Stage 4 would be the best option overall for B&B since it has 18,819 sq ft., the largest individual sound stage at the lot - Stage 3 and Stage 8 share space, which combined makes the space 19,900 sq ft. --- Forgot to add, unless there was an issue with storing the sets, the changes at TVC should have had no issue with production on the show, resulting in fewer set use as there has been no movement in terms of construction that would impact either show (B&B/Y&R). Of the 2-3 times I've been at the studio, the most recent for Don Diamont's 40 years at CBS, it was the most dead I had ever seen the space, but that could be due to vacations, holidays, or the preparation of the B&B move.
    • I didn't post about it in the BtG thread as I still don't watch the show (an hour runtime is just too much for me right now with a new soap I can't just mostly skip through) but I can't imagine the ego of someone who is hired as a breakdown writer and decides to [!@#$%^&*] their own name all over the show. Classless beyond belief. Any writer who cares more about masturbatory behavior than quality of work should not be hired.
    • Yeah, it would've made things more tightly woven.
    • I like Chelsea and Madison. Two very pretty black women as a potential couple. But I really wish this show would've showcased two very handsome black men as a couple instead.
    • I didn't even think of roasters from GH

Maybe this roast will take even more than two years
    • Irna wasn't involved with ATWT at the time of Neil's death, was she? I'm imagining a situation where right after his latest doctor's appointment, he's killed.
    • The Cruise of Deception was the first thing that came to mind when I mentioned that Brady might take after that side of the family
    • We all knew that TT is busy so if she's off screen for a bit except for phone calls and/or visits.. then it is what is. Ashley was nicely used as support... which the writers should have been doing since day 1 so that viewers could understand why exactly she's on the show LOL Chelsea/Madison.... seems too good to be true... we shall see. Shanice as a PT... if it means more airtime.. I'm good.
